What’s New
Version 4.9.6
- Fixed: Some issues related to Dropbox authentication
- Fixed: Uploads to Google Photos could get stuck
New in PhotoSync 4.9.5:
==================
- New: The Live Photo format can now be configured for better interoperability with other platforms. The following options are available:
* Apple (2 Files): Transfers the Live Photo in Apple’s native format. A photo file (JPEG/HEIC) and a video file (MOV) will be transferred. Best suited format for Apple platforms. This is the default option.
* Motion Photo (JPEG): Transfers a JPEG file with embedded video. Best suited option for other mobile platforms and Windows computers. Note: The photo will always be converted to JPEG, and the video to H264 format.
* Apple + Motion Photo: Transfers both the Apple native format and Motion Photo.
- New: This version introduces a different unique identifier implementation for keeping track of photos that are either new or already transferred. This approach should be more reliable, even after major iOS upgrades and restores from iCloud.
- New: You can now define custom tags under Transfer Settings → Automatic Tagging → Custom Tags; these tags will be embedded as IPTC keywords.
- New: More flexibility for selecting Autotransfer source albums. Besides selecting specific user or smart albums as sources for Autotransfer, it is now also possible to include all user albums or all smart albums.
- New: For custom formats (filenames, subdirectories), string functions such as substr, replace, trim, upper, lower, and split can be used.
This advanced feature must be activated in "Expert Settings" first.
- New: You can now select a "Metadata Mode" in the transfer settings. "Standard Mode" re-encodes image data when embedding metadata, while "Lossless Mode" (experimental) preserves image data whenever possible.
- New: Added a Smart Album for "Spatial videos". "Spatial" can now be used for automated tagging or as custom file format (%SP) for subdirectory creation.
- New: PhotoSync Camera now allows the selection of video frame rates, offering 24fps, 30fps, and 60fps options. Higher frame rates will be added in future updates.
- New: Added support for the new SmugMug API. With a SmugMug Source subscription, PhotoSync now also supports uploading RAW files.
- Fixed: When transferring files to SMB servers that do not support case-sensitive filenames, files could be overwritten.
- Fixed: An issue where the "Keep Timezone" option was not applied to the embedded changed date metadata.
- Fixed: An issue that, in certain cases, prevented the listing of shares on SMB servers.
- Fixed: Resolved crash issues that occurred during transfers when both encryption and HEIC-to-JPEG conversion were enabled.
- Fixed: Enhanced handling of the "Allow overwrite = none" setting when transferring to encrypted targets or NAS destinations with case-insensitive file systems.
- Fixed: The TIFF file format is now preserved when the "Metadata Embedding" option is enabled.
- Fixed: Transfer of files >4GB from USB cameras connected over PTP/MTP (e.g., newer GoPro Hero models).
- Fixed: Incorrectly exported rclone encryption config when filename encryption is disabled.
- Fixed: Resolves crash issues that could occur when reloading the photo library.
- Fixed: Enhanced compatibility with some WebDAV servers that support setting a custom file date.
Ratings and Reviews
See AllWorks better than i expected!
TLDR: almost 20k pics/screenshots/vids of ~370 GB transferred perfectly keeping all metadata.
I transferred over all ~5,500 of my photos & videos in a few hours to my NAS device all at their original quality. It was about 120 GB worth of stuff! (I shoot in ProRaw and 1080p60) I’m currently getting my wife’s ~13,000 photos & videos transferred in original quality now (PLENTY of screenshots but mostly non-ProRaw and 1080p30 videos) and it’s about 190 GB. It seemingly got corrupted with hers because it started transferring everything over very fast (about 5 pictures in a second) but would say 0.0% complete for each one instead of actually showing progress. I looked at the NAS and it had a bunch of .aae files (the “edited” versions) but wasn’t transferring the original. I fixed it in the app and now it’s working! The best part is all of the original metadata seems to be preserved. Down to the type of device used, its lens (e.g. wide for iPhone 12 Pro). Great app and worth it!
Backwards photo order? + Some albums not showing up? Help!
I’m currently transferring all my photos/videos from iPhone to iPhone (this app is the method I chose to transfer all my photos/videos over after I got my iCloud account stolen). Everything seems to be working great—I can see my photos and videos in full res, I can see the location/time data, and live photos are showing up perfectly! However, everything in the Recents album is showing up chronologically backwards… Instead of the most recent being at the bottom of the album, it is at the very top, which is so inconvenient for a long time Apple user… Is there any way I can fix this? Also, the albums other than “Recents” and “Favorites” don’t seem to be transferring over. For example, I don’t see my Snapchat album or my Instagram album that I have on my original iPhone. The pictures saved from these different apps are supposed to show “Saved from Snapchat,” “Saved from Instagram,” etc.“ but the pictures don’t show that with the transfer. If there is any way I can fix this, this app would be super helpful. Please let me know if there’s a solution to these or if the solutions can be included in the next update! If so, I’ll update my review to 5 stars!!! Please and thank you!!!
Developer Response ,
Thanks for your feedback.
1) As PhotoSync's main purpose it to transfer photos/videos we think it makes sense to have the newest photos/videos listed first. However, you can of course change the sort order. To do so please open the PhotoSync settings. Then tap "Display Options" and then "Sort Order" and select "Oldest First"
2) The iOS Photo Library is organised in a way that all photos/videos are stored in "Recents". User albums (e.g. "Saved from Snapchat") contain only references to the original in "Recents". If you want PhotoSync to create user albums when transferring from "Recents", please perform the following steps on the sending device:
a) Open the PhotoSync settings and tap "Configure" and then "Phone/Tablet" and enable "Keep album structure".
If you have any more questions, please write a quick mail to support@photosync-app.com. We are happy to help! By mail we can answer much quicker and also more detailed than here in the review section of the AppStore, which is not really suited for support.
Thank you so much
This app is phenomenal, and I hope it remains supported for years to come.
Before this app, I was stuck running MacOS in a Virtual Machine on Windows just to use the native Photos app for exports. I was convinced there was literally no other solution after using countless other apps. It felt like Apple backed me into a corner, saying, “Just buy a Mac.” (I already have a relevant laptop and very competent desktop PC, so spending $1000+ on a Mac just for photo management seemed like overkill).
I’m so happy that I can keep the categorization I’ve set up in Photos when transferring to my PC. I can Transfer 10,000+ photos to my PC and they will all just go into folders without the hassle of having to organize everything all over again. I can’t believe Apple doesn’t have a similar feature! Even in macOS, I’ve had to manually make all 90 of the albums I have as folders, and then export originals to each one individually. That would take an hour+, and using Files on my iPhone to do this is nearly impossible as it just crashes. Now I can ‘select all’ in this app, leave my phone to do its thing for bit, and then it’s all right on my PC nice and organized. Hours of time saved!
I’ve been searching for something like this for over a year, and I was so shocked that it seemingly didn’t exist that I was going to develop one myself! So this definitely saved me a lot of time 😅
Thank you so much. Outstanding work!
