Files Exported from Aperture 3 Keep Their Color Labels

If you haven’t used Color Labels in Aperture much, you may not know that the color stay with the image file even after they are imported. This can come in handy when you are looking at the images in the Finder.

Oddly, they do not show up in all other photo viewing apps, like Photo Mechanic. However, Star Ratings from Aperture will show up in Photo Mechanic.

Filter More Than One Label at a Time in Aperture 3

Aperture’s Search Dialog allows you to select multiple color labels at a time. In other words you can filter out not only red labeled images, but add any other colors as well. It may not be obvious, but it’s there.

Simple Steps to Prevent Disaster After a Shoot

Thomas Boyd's picture
May 28, 2012 - 12:00am

In the past year I’ve seen some experienced photographers make some simple mistakes with serious consequences. Mistakes that could have been prevented with some simple common-sense preventative measures. I know I’m not breaking any new ground here, but it’s always good to be reminded to stay vigilant and look at simple ways to stay organized.

Minimize the Likelihood of Data Loss:

Problem: The short time just after the shoot and before you import your images on a computer is probably the most dangerous point in a workflow. The images exist in one place… on the memory cards. Many things can happen. You can drop them down a storm grate, you can forget them in a restaurant, they can get stolen from your car along with your camera among other things.

Solution: Immediately after the shoot, remove the cards from the cameras. Put them in your memory card wallet, usually upside down so you know they haven’t been imported. Then, put the card wallet in your front pocket and don’t remove it under any circumstances until you are ready to import. The only way you’ll lose the data is if you get mugged or die in a fiery crash. (Don’t forget to put new cards in the cameras and format.)

Problem: The importing procedure can also be fraught with disaster. You can mix up cards, you can accidentally send to an unintended destination and commit any number of fatal mistakes.

Solution: Before importing stack your cards face down next to the card reader. As they are done, stack them face up on the opposite side of the computer. Don’t ask Aperture do delete the images when they done importing. Establish a method that doesn’t change. It should be second nature. When done, put the cards back in the wallet (with the images still on them.)

I like to stack un-imported cards upside down on the left next to my card reader and imported cards face-up on the right.

Problem: Even after the images are on your computer and exist in two places (remember they are still on the cards), they haven’t been backed up properly. This is especially dangerous when working on the road with a laptop.

ApertureExpert not-so-Live Training Session 020

Oh brother… small problem.

Apparently Google+ Hangouts “On Air” are “not available in my country”. I’m in Austria right now and had no idea that this is something that would be limited this way.

So, no live broadcast.

Chalk one up for GoToWebinar then. I didn’t have this problem from them, for sure (did one broadcast from a hotel in Vietnam!).

Two new updates in the pipeline; Aperture 3.2.4 and Digital Camera Raw 3.13!

Aperture 3.2.4

There are only two bullets in this small update, one of which has been discussed at length in these forums, so I’m sure we’re all thrilled to see this addressed:

Creating a Standard Project to Use on Every Shoot

Thomas Boyd's picture

As we all know, Aperture creates an empty library every time we start a new one. There’s no such thing as a “Project Preset”. This is a problem for many of use that like to create elaborate Projects that contain Smart Folders, Albums, Slideshows, Books and other useful things.

This is especially useful for people like me that routinely have audio attachments, video files, and stills on any given shoot. I also like to have five Smart Folders for every star rating.

Customizing the Tooltip in Aperture 3

PhotoJoseph's picture
May 21, 2012 - 12:00am

There’s a handy little popup available in Aperture that can give you all kinds of information about the file without having to open the metadata tab to view it. How to activate (or de-activate) this has come up a couple of times recently in the forum, so I thought I’d do a short post on it.

The Tooltip

The Tooltip (menu: View > Metadata Display > Image Tooltips) pops up under your mouse when you pause over an image, like this:

Working on a Zenfolio Review… and I Could Use Your Help!

Hello readers,

I was recently approached by Zenfolio and asked if I’d consider doing a review for them, as I’d recently done write-ups on other image hosting services. They granted me their top-tier, “Premium Business” account ($250 annual subscription fee; prices starting at $30) so I could have full reign of the services.

Creating an Auto Refreshing Slideshow from Eye-Fi Upload

I had an unusual request from a client. They wanted me to photograph a fund-raiser party and have the photos projected onto a screen throughout the event. After doing it, I realized this would be a fun thing to do at parties, workshops, weddings, and other events.

This is the room where the images were projected.

VSCO Film Presets for Aperture 3 Getting Some User Love

PhotoJoseph's picture
May 16, 2012 - 12:00am

Two readers almost simultaneously posted User Tips on a preset pack called the VSCO Film Pack for Aperture 3. At $79 these presets aren’t cheap, but they include actual high resolution scans of real negative stock for their textures. I have asked the company what resolution the scans are, because as many of you know who’ve used my textured presets, there are hard limits to every preset.

ApertureExpert Live Training Session 019 Books Available Now

PhotoJoseph's picture
May 14, 2012 - 12:28pm

This was the first official Live Training done over Google+. For those there live, the echo problem has been solved! Which also will hopefully solve the sync issue in the recording. Don’t worry, it’s only in the Q&A, but it’s annoying nonetheless.

This session on Aperture Books is 45 minutes before even getting to the Q&A, then another 20 minutes of questions.

These days, most of us own or use multiple screens. Whether the screens are on one or more computers, iPhones, iPods, iPads, other smart phones or tablets, or an AppleTV, at some point you’re going to want to view your best photos at any time, anywhere.
