There is no username/library/aperture/plugins type system. I have a bunch of plugins that I can't remove, because I just wanted to try the trials of them.

You are almost looking in the right place…
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Insand also
/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins(so, both root and user folders)

got it - was looking in the finder window, and not of the desktop HD icon.
