Cannot sync video from Aperture to iPad #1

When searching the web it seems difficult, if not impossible, to sync videos from Aperture to iPad. I try to use iTunes, here is my scenario.

Took a few photos and some small video clips with my Panasonic DMC-TZ10, video format was set to Motion Jpeg (.MOV files). Then I imported them to Aperture, and both the photos and videos looked fine in Aperture. In Aperture I chose Export | Originals and created a new folder on the Desktop. No problems, the files were created in the folder, a total of a few hundred MB.

Started iTunes, and selected the iPad, then Photos.
I tried two ways to get it all over to the iPad.

1) Sync Photos from Aperture: Selected the project in Aperture I wanted to sync but ONLY the photos were synced (got an error message on the iPad, 3 files were not synced, i.e the videos).

2) Tried Sync Photos from folder: Selected the folder on the desktop that contained the exported photos and videos but once again ONLY the photos were synced.

Of course the checkbox “Include Videos” in iTunes was checked.

Is this an Aperture problem or perhaps a more global Apple thing? HOW do I get my videos over to the iPad?

My versions are: OS X 10.8.2, Aperture 3.4.3, iTunes 11.0 (163), iOS 8.0.1

It could be the resolution of the video … If I recall correctly videos have to be less than 1080p to load on the iPad … at least the earlier versions of iPad.

Try making a copy of the movie file at a lower resolution and see if that works.

Butch, you have a good point there. However, since I have a 3rd generation iPad, the display resolution is 2048*1536, and my video is 1280*720. So it should be well inside bounds.
1280*720 is the pixel size according to Aperture. Just talked to a friend, and his video with the exact same resolution worked. Strange…

Try saving a copy of the movie as a .m4v using Quicktime … it may be the .mov format holding you up.

Good thinking Butch, the issue is spelled FORMAT! From QT I exported to m4v format, and then it synced.

Lessons learned: Do not look blindly on the file extension .MOV itself, there is more to it than that. Actually I also synced a friend’s file with the extension .MOV and it synced perfectly. So what is the difference in his .MOV file compared to mine?

In QT I can open “Window | Show Movie Inspector” to find what the format is. In my case it was “Photo JPEG” which in my Panasonic camera was called “Motion JPEG”. My camera also supports 2 versions of AVCHD Lite, with or without GPS info. AVCHD is indeed better but I abandoned it earlier because I was unable to import into Aperture. BUT: From version 3.3 of Aperture it is now possible to import AVCHD. So from now on my camera is set to “AVCHD Lite (GPS Rec)”. I tried this and now I can both import into Aperture and sync to my iPad.

Thanks Butch for the assistance, issue SOLVED!
