onOne Software recently updated their Perfect Photo Suite to version 8.5. This is a free upgrade for version 8 users, and a paid upgrade for anything prior. There's a discount up until May 22nd on both the new purchases and upgrade, so if you're interested, move quickly! There are three versions; “Standard” which is the standalone app only, “For Aperture & Lightroom” which adds the ability to work as a plugin for Aperture, Lightroom and Photoshop Elements, and finally if you want it to work as a plying for the full Photoshop as well, then you need to step up to “Premium”. Check out the full product page for more info.

Check out this video provided by the onOne Software marketing team (note this is NOT my video) showing off the updated Perfect Eraser. It's impressive, for sure. I may have to do a comparison between this, Photoshop's eraser, and MacPhun's Snapheal Pro.

Hi,

22nd? ouch no big time for trial… how will u position this suite vs. other suite like Nik?

THanks,

J.

Quite differently, although there is certainly overlap. For me, Nik is all about the control points. That's the reason I go back to them over and over again.

I don't use any of onOne's stuff on a regular bases except for Perfect Resize, which I love. I used their retouching quite a bit on a specific project (Sculpture Series) but other than that I haven't.

I’m going to second Joseph.

I use both pretty routinely in a lot of bulk portrait work. There is nothing in OnOne that matches the control points of Nik. There is nothing in Nik that lines up with many of the OnOne specialized tools (like Batch, Portrait, Resize, etc). So for me, both are well worth the now modest investment. The overlap is in their effects/presets solutions for B&W and color. If you do a lot of the same kind of thing again and again, both suites are absolutely invaluable. I was sold on Viveza the first time I saw control points and Perfect Portrait saves me oodles of time on every job. Both are also frustratingly buggy when you least expect it. I regularly shake my fist at Google and OnOne.

If you occasionally tinker, I’d say save some money. Take a closer look at learning to get the most out of the Aperture controls (especially brushing all the adjustments) and get the Macphun software when they have a bundle or sale on. Macphun has really created some cheap, amazing, and accessible tools. You won’t find as tight of integration with each of their tools but they are powerful while keeping it sort of fun.

And as an aside, I love being an Adobe investor. That CC thing is a license to print money. But those Pixelmator guys keep making that tool better and better. It’s not the latest Photoshop. Every time I turn around, Pixelmator gains new features that bring it closer. If I couldn’t have CC, it’s a definitely worthy as a replacement.
