Here is my wish:

- TIFF format for Photo extension round trip instead of JPEG.

Star ratings and the ability to quickly filter by star ratings is the feature that I can’t live without. Using “X-Star” tags and temporary smart folders won’t cut it for me.

Selective Full/Optimised images on Mac (+ iOS devices) so that I can still see and explore my entire library but select which images are readily available for viewing/editing on the go - I know Apple/The Planet is going all “Cloud” but realistically we don’t always have fast/free connection to pull down images on demand. It would be really useful to have, for example, all this months/years/selected albums available as full versions but the rest of my library available but optimised.

And (cheating here):

+1 for anyone asking for star ratings

+1 for anyone asking for pick/reject flags for workflow

+1 for anyone asking for better metadata support

I’ll add another wish:

- Allow user to choose in iTunes sync to import photos without down scaling.. If I have a 24 megapixel image, I want that 24 Megapixel image in my iPad library.. not a scaled down version… I too am not one of the Cloud fans.. I like my Photos on local disks and have access when I plug those in… don’t need them all all the time. If I need to go to a client, I just sync the clients Folder using iTunes and it’s on my iPad.

I have found a workaround to getting full resolution images to my iPad for anyone interested:

- Install the free “Documents app by Readdle”on your iPad

- then plug your iPad to itunes and transfer your Full res JPEGs folder to the Documents app.

- open Documents app on your iPad and your folder full of images will be waiting for you in the iTunes Folder.

- Enjoy yourr Full res images on your iPad.. you can also save individual images to the Photos app Camera roll to further edit with another app or Photos app itself.

Hope this helps anyone!

Stacks because importing my Aperture library is a mess for me. i'm not holding my breath. Apple automatically create stacks for iphone burst shots and has not allowed users to manually create them so it seems unlikely this feature will ever happen.

a big reason i don't really want to migrate away from Aperture is because i have a lot tricks up my sleeves for just about any thing.

I can stay on Aperture for another decade.

In 2000, Steve Jobs said the new Mac OS X was going to be Apple's modern OS for the next 15 years. i think he's right. From my perspective, Mac OS X has peaked out and has not gotten any better for several years now.  I don't need a new system so i can stay with Aperture for many years.

If there is a way to do this now, please tell me.

The new beta version of Picktorial supports has an “auto-mask” feature for local brushes.

Picktorial can natively browse Aperture libraries, or work as a Photos extension.

Picktorial can recall sliders’ positioning and masks, allowing you to pick up where you left off even after restarting Photos.

The beta/trial is free: www.picktorial.com

I’m leading the Picktorial team and I would be happy to answer any questions and hear your feedback. Thanks!

Photos has zero batch support and that’s not acceptable.  Even just batch cut-and-paste would be helpful.  For example, to keyword an entire import with keyword(s) regarding location or event, for example.  Extend this to lift-and-stamp of adjustments.

I urge people to post feature request on Apple’s Feedback page if you haven’t already… http://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

If more people lets Apple know what they are missing in Mac version of Photos, maybe app team will have more reason to implement said features.

I have already given feedback on Tiff round trip support from extensions (as an option user could activate if they want).. If I am the only one who gives the feedback, they might disregard but if many post to them, we might get this in the next version, who knows.

One of (each being equal)

1) Functional parity between the iOS and Mac Photos app.

2) A list/sublist kind of keyword system allowing for mutually exclusive keywords from the list. E.g. select from “1 Star”, ”2 Star” but not both. Allow these to be created by the end user.

3) Special characters in Keywords (“*”, “**”, etc)

Here is a list of the features, in order of priority, I would like added to Photos.

1. Stacks
2. Hierarchical keywords
3. Batch processing
4. Star ratings
5. Opening images in extensions with complete round-trip TIFF support
6. Compare view modes
7. Highlight Hot and Cold Areas (highlights, shadows)
8. Ability to add, edit or view IPTC data (e.g. copyright, contact information)
9. Custom metadata fields
10. Custom metadata views
11. Curves tool
12. Renaming files on import
13. Colour labels
14. Flags
15. Exporting of albums as libraries
16. Merging of libraries
17. Convert consolidated library to referenced library
18. Ability to edit photos without switching to ‘Edit’ mode

As suggested earlier, I will send my feature requests to Apple. I don”t know if it will help, but it can’t hurt.

I may move to Photos when Affinity Photo for iPad arrives and move my entire RAW workflow to the iPad regardless of whether Photos for Mac gets any good (I mainly suspect that it will not). That will allow me to work on active projects on the iPad and sync completed projects via iTunes (instead of the cloud).

That will give me unprecedented RAW development. Granted,  the save backs are 8-bit jpeg instead of tif because of Apple's self proclaimed amazing design.

GREAT NEWS!!! Affinity Photo 1.5 update will bring COMPLETE FULL APP editing to Photos Extension. I highly recommend buying this. This will bring the editing capability way beyond what Lightroom CC, Capture One Pro and Aperture combined!!

what can Affinity Photo do? Watch Photo Joseph podcast. That's only the very tip of the iceberg!! It can do everything Photoshop CC can do except edit video, 3D polygon modelling, Matlab interface, and character rigging.

Affinity Photo looks interesting, Luminar is also getting good press. Both are lacking in Digital Asset Management (DAM) capabilities but I’ve read that the Luminar folks are working on a standalone application that will do DAM.

The problem is not so much in the editing capabilities but in that Photos is brain dead. No star ratings, no batch editing so let alone a thousand other features it is lacking. It is dumbfounding how far Cook and his team have regressed imaging capabilities and basically abandoned photo pros and enthusiasts.

I can’t wait for Affinity Photo and Luminar to get better, I really dislike Lightroom’s UI and Capture One is merely passable for me.

Krakatoa Sundra's picture

Luminar masking tool is very limited and makes local editing less capable than Aperture. For example, the brush does not allow the users to apply the brush mask to a specific color, luminosity, or boundary of edge-detection. Can you believe that? No edge detection!!! this makes it useless except for estimated local edit that is imprecise.

The gradient mask also has the same issue.  The user cannot apply to a specific luminosity, color, or within the boundary of edge-detection. It pretty much reduces the usefulness of this tool as a graduated filter.

Luminar is great as a global adjustment and filter app as well as approximate local edits. I very much prefer Nik Collection because the controls are a lot bettter and thus more of a professional toolkit in comparison.

Granted, we mostly do global but on the rare occasion when I need local editing, I want precise selection and masking most of the time.

Fortunately, Picktorial (www.picktorial.com) offers edge-detection for brushes (and a catalog-free DAM that automatically monitors changes in referenced folders, and with native support for browsing Aperture libraries).

The big news: we are about to release an update that will enable you to use any of the existing tools (+ more) as local adjustments (e.g. Curves, HSL, Split-Toning, etc.). In the new version, you can also select a blending mode for each adjustment layer (i.e. region you adjust) and customize the interface with the tools that you need.

The nice thing is that we managed to keep everything fully non-destructive, so you can modify any of your very first edits without undoing the latest ones.

I can send a preview version in a few days. Email me if you are interested: yoav@picktorial.com.

For $25, this app is seriously impressive. I think it would be great for these people.

1) people who wants a Lightroom alternative.

2) Apple Photos users who want professional level retouch editing capability.

3) Aperture users who want maintain their DAM, but use a more more retouch editing front end.

The app is a great start so far. How about some features requests?

1) Ability to open Aperture library from the File menu. Currently need to drag library in.

1) Would also be great to have all the local selection be available for the overlay as well as having more blend modes.

3) need to be able to hide the editing Windows. Browser feels too cramped with the editor taking up space. Would be great to have a full browser view.

Thanks, Robert!

1. You can already user the Library > Import Folder… menu to add an Aperture library (import does not actually mean copying or conversion of anything). Maybe we should clarify this with a better name for that menu option.

2+3: Will be added in future updates. What blending modes would you like to have there? We are now adding blending modes for local adjustments - so it’s a good time to add them for the Overlay tool too.

We prioritize tasks based on feedback and requests we hear from our users. Things that are easy to do while keeping the UI clean and easy-to-use are sometimes implemented immediately. Features that require more resources to implement need to get enough requests to be implemented.

I would love to have a discussion about feature requests in a different thread, per Tony’s suggestion.

Thanks.

1) Ya, it should be clearly stated since Picktorial allows users to view the source RAW or images in their library but does not convert any thing. I did not expect it to convert the Aperture Library but many prospective users may think that Picktorial may do that.

Thanks for adding full view browswer. I intend to use it view images, graphs and charts that are sitting on the filesystem.

For overlay, I normally experiment with the blend mode so I will go through the whole list  of blend mode to see the effects because a lot of the time, I don't know what they will look like until I see them. Some other blend modes that I use more often are difference, glow, linear light. For me, I like to go through a list and experiment with each blend modes. I guess you'll have to figure out the priority of these after you triage all the features you would like to implement. Thanks!

Hi Yoav,

Could you please add full support for PNG files? I was not able to perform even the most basic functions in the app with PNG files. For example, I could not use the Star-Rating on PNG files without it telling me I need to convert to JPG. Without the star rating, I am not able to do any kind of triage with my images.

I noticed a bug when i have an image selected in the browser and hitting the arrow keys does not allow me navigate. For example, when I hit the right arrow, it does not go to the next image or hitting the down arrow key does not go to the image below in the browser.

Thanks!!

In the Luminar live session done by Joseph, Kevin from Macphun hinted at Luminar gaining DAM abilities in a future update.. see towards the end of video when they do Q&A when he says Luminar does not have DAM features… yet….

for now, I am happy with the Creative Kit suite of Macphun apps but might purchase Luminar once they gain DAM functionality built in.. Also,  I have been informed by Macphun on their Facebook group that going forward, major R&D will be put towards adding features to Luminar – makes sense as the core features of all the CK apps are built into Luminar… Macphun assured me that they plan to keep supporting/updating existing CK apps to allow them to work on Sierra and maybe the next macOS but no major features will be added to those apps, only bug squashing I believe.

Affinity and other Mac App store photo editing apps in standalone version are great but Apple Photos app and its lack of Tiff round tripping from extensions essentially made me abandon any short term hopes for Photos app extensions..

it was a great promise that Apple seems to have crippled on delivery. Unless of course your workflow cosists of only keeping edits in JPEG then they are great…

love all those apps in standalone mode though as I can exoport edited images to uncompressed format and bring those into abnother app for further editing with no considerable loss of quality.

Ya, in a way, Photos is hideous app. It's difficult to do any thing and to figure out any thing because it requires the users to do a lot of clicking. For example, if u want to restore a deleted photo or video, you need to know (and most users do not know and it's not obvious) you need to click unhide Albums, then you will see the recently deleted trash can. From there, you need to know to do cmd+click (and consumers do that either). Navigation through the photo structure of collection is too much clicking. If all you want to do was increase the exposure, you need to select the photo, click edit, then you need to know to click to open the light adjustment (which is not obvious and pretty confusing for consumers) and then adjust the exposure.

Not only did Apple remove features, they don't want you to do various things like using tiffs and being able to manually create stacks (only available for iPhone bursts).

Something are so dumb, I cannot believe it. You cannot open another library unless you quit the app first and do a option double click on the app. This is totally insane. Just about every app I know allows you to open its native file with ease from the File menu without having to quite the app and do an option double double click. This is completely insane!!!

@ Krakatoa Sundra: I feel Apple should implement a way for users to switch from PRO to consumer UI by hitting an advanced UI option… that way they do not need to build a separate app.. just have 1 app but different UI options depending on users choice… Pixelmator on Mac does this with their “secret” Vectormator UI…. just hit CMD+SHIFT +V and BAM you’Re in Vectormator mode… hit shortcut keys again and you go back to Pixelmator mode with it’s own UI… found that brilliant… Imagine clicking a Pro or Advanced tools toggle on top of the histogram in Photos app and all the sliders are displayed like they were in Aperture (not tucked behind categories like Light, Color, B+W etc..)

As for opening another library easily, If you want to open a different library, instead of ALT/Option clicking on app icon, just head to the folder that contains your multiple Photos Libraries and just Double click on the Library itself.. it will open straight away in Photos… I have given names to my libraries to easily know which to open when needed (example iPhone photos, RAW photos, etc…).. hope this can help you.

SKR Imaging's picture

granted Photos app allows you to click the little arrow to reveal all the options and those sliders are retained if you close and reopen the app but imagine all the possibilities Apple would have if a simple Advanced and Standard toggle switch was add… something like Luminar is doing with their Preset layouts and custom Layout options.. love that idea from Macphun.

I wish!!!!!!!!! Or at the very least have an in-app purchase to buy an advance module.

Lossy editing is a bummer of using Photos.  My guess is it would be jpeg which of course is lossy and is 8-bits per channel. Try spreading that over DCIP3 colorspace. Would be great to have 16-bit tif or at the very least, 16-bit per channel PNG. My guess is it won't happen even though Photos has a codec for tiff and png so there is no reason to expect this to change. I'm always evaluating various solutions and I feel being cross-platform is super important so it would be easy migrate out of Apple's ecosystem and get rid of the macs as a creative tool for any kinds of artistic work.
