How any photographer photo edits is a very personal thing… the look, emotion, and experience very much depends on you. Join me as I edit photos from Oaxaca!

In this session, I explore some of my photos from Oaxaca, Mexico and explain how I chose the look that I did, take you through the process of choosing that look, then expanding on it for each individual photo. The presets I'm starting with are from VSCO and the preset pack is called “00” which doesn't appear to be available now. I think it was a promo or sample pack, but the presets I use are Kodak Gold.

Here's what we learn in this video…

  • Choosing a preset to start with (choosing a look for your shoot)
  • Understanding what is and isn't reset by a preset
  • Unpacking the preset to understand how to change it
  • Expanding on what the preset does (adding your own touch to it)

Loved this video. I’ve been using LR fo a year now and still am not totally comfortable. More LR videos!!!  I learned so much from watching you work.

Anything dealing with Printing would be appreciated although I know you don’t do too much with that.

My experiece with the healing tool has been awful. Same experience as you had in the video. Do not fully understand how it works and since I don’t use photoshop I’m sort of stuck.

Some LR areas I’d like to see videos: Wacom tablet and LRLR Mobile workfow. How do you organize your iPhone photos into your LR catalog system?

thanks for a great video!

Thanks Susan! You're right I really don't do any real printing directly from Lightroom; I outsource all mine. But I like the other ideas, especially about Mobile. You'll see soon that I do in fact have a great Lightroom Mobile surprise coming up… but it'll be a few weeks before it's released. Stay tuned though!!

Thanks Joseph. Outstanding!

Jospeh, Just finished watching this session.  Two things.  The little do-hickey tool in the HSL brick, and present in others, is called, I believe, the “target adjustment tool.”  Or something like that.  In the vertical pano of the the church at about the 41st minute of the video, try turning off the auto crop and use the Boundary Warp slider only, often all the way to 100,  It is meant to be used as an option to auto crop. What this does in Lr is give a sort of a PS content aware fill to the white areas.  It will expand the boundary and fill it in.  In the case of the church photo, it may have given you more space on the sides of the photo and made the removal of the distracting objects on the edges easier.  Or maybe not since the pano stitching appeared to screw up Lr’s selection healing point.  Regardless. Retry the vertical pano and use the Boundary Warp tool and see how it looks.  Let us know if there is a significant change/improvement.

Cheers,

Florian

I tried setting the Boundary Warp to 100 and the lines are no longer straight:

But of course that can be corrected in Lightroom, so here's that image corrected; definitely not very good. I also tried lens correction to remove the bowing but got nowhere fast. And you can see that I didn't gain anything for that extra edge on the church I wanted (still would have to rebuild the same amount on the bottom of the image):

And finally, the healing showed the same oddity:

Thanks for the ideas, but unfortunately no improvement.

Joseph, Oh well, I guess sometimes the boundary warp works better and sometimes not.  I’ve not taken any vertical panos so I don’t know if that’s the “problem.”   But boundary warp is still an option to consider in place of the crop option.  Thanks for giving it a try.  For the removal of the object on the left border maybe lift and stamp tool in PS would be better?? Lr does have some limitations in that regard.  And I’ve not used Luminar’s version of the spot removal tool enough in these tricky situations. Thanks for giving this suggestion a shot and sharing it with us. This Live Edit session was a  very good one.  We got to see your approach to editing and how you create a consistent look to your pictures. It’s always nice to see how others approach post-processing.

Glad you enjoyed the session Florian. Regarding the heal tool; this normally works amazing well in Lightroom and it's rare I have to go to Photoshop to fix something like that. This was such a simple fix, too. It must have something to do with the multi-file DNG source.

Joseph, It’s fixed!  Just wanted to let you know :)
