Are there guidelines for physical setting for evaluating pictures? lighting, window treatments, etc?

Carl,

The most important things are consistent light (so not being near windows) that doesn’t change throughout the day, keeping glare off the screen of course, and if you really want to go for it, consider painting the wall behind your monitor a neutral gray. Look at the colors in the Aperture UI and copy from there!
