I have been using Aperture and it always takes forever to import my photos from my iPhone. I did it via iPhoto very quickly.
Computer:
MacMini
Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
I have around 250GB free on my internal drive.
I do use a NAS (I read the post on NAS drives), but my works fine with everything else.
I plugged my iPhone4 in about 30 minutes ago for 200 pics and it's still “importing” with no visible progress.
What am I doing wrong? I can't imagine what it would be like with a real camera! I did do some transfers from my RED Epic, but that was a mess (we use a Mac Pro with it typically - I was just playing around).
Dan,
I know you… where do I know you from? There can’t be too many Dan Mosquedas running around! Something back from my Final Cut days at Apple, methinks…
For this iPhone import problem, did you actually click import or are you waiting for it to start something? I haven’t plunged in my iPhone to download images since Lion and iOS 5, since now I use Photo Stream, but when you first plug it in you should see the import window in Aperture, where you can select some photos or all, then click on Import.
Sorry to ask the silly question, but did you try relaunching Aperture or restarting the computer?

Joseph,
I’m not sure we’ve met, though I’ve visited Apple once. Who knows? There are a fair number of folks with my last name in media.
When I plug in my iphone, and unlock it, it shows up. I hit import and then it churns away. To test the issue, I renamed my Aperture Library’s folder, and created a library on my internal drive.
I then imported. It did work, not nearly as fast as iPhoto, but it worked. I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet and move my pictures to my internal drive. Perhaps I could manage the files better and export older photos for archiving on my 2TB NAS?
Aperture does work with my NAS, but the import issue has basically caused me to rarely import my photos. I guess this frustrates me because iTunes works fine off the NAS and its running video up to 1080P.
The other thought going through my head is “what if I buy a new Mac and it has a smallish SSD?” Though I hear you saying Thunderbolt might be the answer. Maybe Seagate’s Flex system Thunderbolt adapter might be the ticket for inexpensive (in relative terms) access to a drive at high speeds.
I should note, my network, is just that, mine. I have a share for my wife, but she doesn’t use it, so nobody else is messing with it nor has access to it.
Sorry for the ramble.
Dan
Dan,
I know you said you read the NAS post but Just to be sure, you read the one that says the Aperture library on a NAS is NOT supported?

As far as a quicker import into iPhoto, that is understandable. Aperture does more on import than iPhoto does.

Joseph,
So, I moved my library back to my internal drive :-( Things are now speedy, including the import.
When I upgrade, I’ll probably go the Thunderbolt route. I hate having all these pix on my internal drive. I do have it backing up to one of my 2 NAS drives.
Thanks again for the help and the great site!
