How to Add a Wireless Microphone to iPhone 7

Photo Moment - January 31, 2017

Connecting a microphone to an iPhone used to be simple. You could use a RØDE smartLav+ and connect directly. Or use any wired or wireless mic with a simple TRS to TRRS adapter and be good to go. But now you also need a Lightning to headphone jack adapter. Which actually may not be enough. So maybe you need an Apple Camera Adapter (?!?!) and then a USB audio adapter. Confused yet? It's nuts… but this is what it takes today.

Thanks for you video and help, i bought everything and unfortunately it doesn't match for me with the iphone 11 pro. and G3. I supposed that it was a microphone problem or cable from sennheiser so i tested on my dslr. and the G3 worked good. so do you have any tip to resolve the problem.? thanks a lot for your help
Have you watched the updated video? Link in description
Hey there - finally - got the answers I needed - still using iPhone8plus - but question: how do you light yourself? It looks good and I'm an actress doing a lot of self taping and cannot get the light right - I have a ring light and a small LED, 2 soft boxes - still can't get it on - any advice? thanks
Thank you soooo much. Needed this!
Hey thanks for all the info , but I have been running into problems with my I phone and the fifine wireless microphones . I bought the Sabrent usb external stereo /and the Apple ubs and no avail ... can you help me with this problem.. I am getting no sound from using my camera videos .. I even try the voice note feature on my phone and nothing ..
I have no experience with the “fifine” mics, sorry
Great video and humour Joseph. I was having the same problem. As soon as you mentioned impedance it rang a bell and I knew this must be the problem. Ordered the same plugs as you had and it worked as with Jessica. Found it amusing you didn’t know the colour coding convention for line out and mic in. Also there is blue for line in if you ever need to know! Many thanks, regards Book.
how add two mic to iphone 7 plus ?
Thank you for the info! Out of the gate, I don't want to hear about your car! I so appreciate videos that get to the point.
sometimes stories need context. And this was a daily live show, so the car thing was part of the “good morning” routine. The format has changed though since 2017 when this was recorded. Did you watch the 2019 edition of this video? You really should, as things have changed since this was made.
Arrg! I don't want to hear about the way it used to be!
Did you buy the ones in this video, or some third party adapters? Also watch the newest version of this video… this is the 2017 edition and there have been two more: 2019 Edition: https://youtu.be/EIMtJvNz2bQ
2018 Edition: https://youtu.be/kiD4u4wNpuQ
Will it work on my iPhone 6 plus? Its because nothing working when I plugged in. I have got 3.5mm Audio and charge adapter. Also got the Lighting to headphone jack as well. No luck. Same happened to iPad Pro. Any suggest? regards Andy
Great vid, but this sucks having to do all this in order to use a Mic. Thanks for the video
yeah, agreed. Be sure to watch the 2019 edition of this video before you buy anything — https://youtu.be/EIMtJvNz2bQ
Joseph, thanks for this video. I do a lot of Motorsports live events and talking to drivers while on grid getting ready for a race. I had a microphone that I thought was really good only to find out it didnt work so well, well that was due to the hookup. Now with this video all now come out great and the sound is awesome. Only thing is FiLMic Pro now cost $14.99, but again was worth it being able to test the mic and shoot outstanding video
Awesome!
Damn I can’t believe This guy just kept my attention that long on this topic after I found out it didn’t work good job you got a certain way of presenting. I’ll bite you earned it.subscribe? Don’t mind if I do...bell too? Yup
LOL 😂 thanks!
I have the smart lav plus and an iPhone 8 plus. I use the smart lav on my GoPro and it works fine but when I try to use it on my iPhone with the dongle I get nothing. I’ve tried using the trrs to trs adapter just to see if it would make a difference and it also didn’t work. Any ideas?
Ive tried this with all of the exact same gear and I'm not getting any microphone connection....
I’ve heard of bad USB audio adapters happening. I’d start there.
I film sports so for example volleyball and basketball. I need a mic that I can mic those athletes up that has an internal mic that sounds good but won’t cut out when there are other athletes moving in front of them or if they turn their back to me with the receiver
Watch the 2019 edition of this video. In there a company shows up that makes mic packs specifically for sports; it's flexible and waterproof.
great video
Great video but you could have just stayed with the Rode SC4 adaptor. The reason the iPhone didn't recognise the external mic was because you need to power the mic on and connect the SC4 to the iPhone lightning adaptor BEFORE you connect everything to the iPhone port. If the lightning adaptor is already connected to the iPhone before you connect the external mic then the iPhone thinks it's headphones you've just connected.Ohmic resistance is just as poor with your USB configuration as you have just as many connections as the SC4 configuration. Thanks for posting though.
Guys... this solution does work! Thank you so much, Joseph. This has saved me hours of frustration!
Yes it does! 😁 Did you watch the 2019 edition, too? https://youtu.be/EIMtJvNz2bQ
Hey Joe, I have a Samsung phone and Sennheiser 100. I'm assuming that the Rode SC3 ON IT'S OWN WILL CONNECT THE 2 SYSTEMS. Is that not correct or are you saying that I need all of those other parts including the white thingy?
I made this video precisely because what seems like it should work, does not. In fact I've made two more videos on this topic since then. Look in the description for links to the 2018 and 2019 editions of this topic.
This was sooo helpful .. omg 💯
Awesome! Be sure you watch the latest version, since this is the 2017 edition. There've been two more! Here's 2019: https://youtu.be/EIMtJvNz2bQ
Do this to see how the external LCDs will connect with iPhone X Max.
You are awesomly great. I lóve all your fast centences and you’re variation of small specific emotions :):):):)
Hello, I have a question for you that I just cant seem to get an answer for, no matter how much research I do! I figured if anyone knew, it would definitely be you! First let me thank you for this video! My wireless lavalier mics work perfectly now after purchasing the Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter and the Sabrent USB External Stereo Sound Adapter. I purchased the 2 Lavalier Wireless UHF Lapel mics & 1 Receiver by FerBuee. My question is, is it possible to add additional lavalier mics to this setup? I need at least 3, possibly 4 mics. If so, what do I need? Additional adapter(s)? Another Receiver? I don't need an expensive setup for what I am using it for. This inexpensive setup is perfect for what I need it for, so the cheapest method is what I am looking for. However, I am willing to invest a lot more money on a higher quality setup if that's the only way. I am using an iPhone 7 Plus and am thinking about purchasing Filmic Pro. Thank yyou for reading my post. I look forward to your response!

PhotoJoseph Thank You!
To add more than two mics, you'll need a mixer. I don't have models offhand to recommend but if you're going to that length, then I'd recommend not just mixing but recording externally. A multi-track field recorder is what you're looking for. TASCAM, Sound Devices and Zoom all make excellent gear. Head to Curtis Judd https://youtube.com/curtisjudd for audio advice. That way you'll get everyone's mic recorded separately, for mixing in post. If you really just want to mix in the field and not record separately, then a simple field mixer will do (field meaning it's portable; battery operated). Good luck!
I have an older Sony wireless kit, URX-P2 tuner/receiver and a UTX-B2 transmitter. I talked with many people which also included a call to Sony with no solution. Sony said the solution was to buy a new bluetooth system. Fortunately, this worked. Thanks for the post! SUBSCRIBED!
AWESOME!
Is that what you do with a Fifine KO37?
Don’t buy anything yet. New video coming Tuesday or Wednesday — the 2019 version of this
holy fuck this guy is the second coming of michael keaton (1:07)
Any more than one adapter is unacceptable. Get the right tool for the job. Get any phone with an audio jack!
Great solution mate
It's "Im-PEE-dence"!
say that five times fast
Pink is like a universal standard for microphone. My pc from 1994 until 2019 have all had pink ports for microphone.
when I connect the lighting adapter and only connect a lighting power cord, my phone doesnt charge, so... is my phone not recognizing the adapter? it worked the first time and hasn't since.
I get that sometimes with the lightning to HDMI adapter… it doesn’t charge (regardless if the HDMI is plugged in or not too) but usually just unplugging/ replugging fixes it. With the USB, if you plug in the USB along with the lightning cable does it start to charge? I just tested with my iPad and using the USB adapter with just lightning cable connected, it does still charge.
Thanks a lot Joseph ... was looking for a solution for my new iPhone 8 plus. Have a sennheiser radio mic that I use with my Ex3 Sony. Couldn't find anything (to use the mic) for the iPhone in the physical market in my country. I've ordered online what looks like the equivalent of what you've shown here. I'll add a hot shoe jack that has to attach to the bottom of a Smooth 4 gimbal, to hold the receiver end of the mic.

I love your style By the way ... the lightness, humour, and explanation. I've seen the shorter version too!
Appreciate that. I’ll be leading a workshop in Kolkata, Varanasi and Allahabad for the Kumbh Mela. Very excited.
Wonderful! Which means you’ve been here before. I’m in NCR. If you need any kind of assistance, l’ll be glad to help wherever I can.
Awesome. I’ll be back in India later this month!
Home ... India. Though my heart is all over the earth and.... beyond :p
Thanks! And good luck. Where’s your home country?
Hello, I've watched your video in regard to connecting a wireless mic to an iphone or ipad. I've bought all of the connectors that you've mentioned. I have a two lav mics and can only get mic a to pick up recording. Any reason why mic b will not pick up? Thanks for your help. Chris

UHF Dual-Channel Wireless Microphone System

Yes, 2 transmitters and one receiver. Sorry!
One transmitter? I assume you mean one receiver. Unless the receiver is a dual signal one, you can’t receive from two transmitters (the mics) into one receiver. What brand and model mics do you have?
Help me out… do you have two wireless mic sets, meaning two transmitters and two receivers? And you want them both to feed into the iPhone?
Just like you had it, exact connectors (Apple adapter and usb adapter). Is there anyway to make both work?
How are you connecting both receivers to the phone? My kit outline was for a single wireless mic pack.
BM800 Test Please 🙏🏻
im so glad u posted this video <3 <3 you r so good looking by the way :)
☺️🙏🏻
is it apply to facebook live?
Woooho, you need two audiocards Adapters (Lightning to Camera Connection Kit AND a USB to Audio) to put in a wireless Mic to an iPhone 7 Plus - great. not. :-(
@@photojoseph A russian Vlogger uses a TRRS Splitter Cable to tell the iPhone there is a microphone.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UfwGnppe4g
I know. It sucks. But if you want a quality analog mic that’s the price to pay. I will be reviewing a digital solution from RØDE soon that HOPEFULLY will be solid and reliable.
One wishes for a more simple microphone solution connecting directly to the phones bluetooth interface.
Great lesson!
1. You talk too fast. Slow down.
2. The word is impedance, not impotence.
3. Stereo mini jacks on computers that are colored pink and green have been a universal sign to let you know which one is the mic input and which one is the hinge phone and put for decades.
Thank you so much for the video. Is there an option for being able to attach a corded lavelier smart mic to an iPhone 8 plus? I have the lightening to usb camera adapter, purchased one of the USB audio adapters, and then the microphone. It appears that the microphone is still not registering on the phone. I'm sure it is something simple, but I am at a loss as is every one I ask for help.
What do you mean by “smart mic”? Brand and model? Corded is easiest; use the RØDE SmartLav+ http://geni.us/cnZbGSn and all you need is the Apple lightning to headphone adapter that comes with the iPhone. The key is that the tip of the microphone is TRRS and not TRS. If it’s TRS, adapt it to TRRS with the RØDE SC4 http://geni.us/F8sl2 then connect to your Apple Lightning adapter.
great vid. clear and you speak well.
Do you use some kind of external preamp rather than using the preamp on the phone? Is the quality good enough? Rode do a radio mic/lav which has a preamp on the receiver. Any view on the pros and cons of using the Rode radio mics with preamps vs the G3 mic setup that you have?
I'm not sure. When using a mic with a dslr, people turn down the amp on the dslr and plug the mic into a preamp first, so they're adjusting input volume using the preamp. Some rode mics -- including, for example, this rode radio mic below, has a 20db gain button added into the receiver, so it's boosting the signal prior to it getting to the electronics on the phone. It's important as good pre-amps mean you can turn the volume up without getting hiss (plus other reasons). I'm thinking about shooting on a range of equipment and am not sure now as to whether to use senheisser or this rode. Hopefully I'll get to test some of this out somewhere before buying.

Hm, interesting… I’m not sure if the USB adapter is acting as a pre-amp? Or, does the Sennheiser receiver have a pre-amp? Admittedly I’m not that versed in this. I haven’t tried the Rode mic your’e talking about, so I can’t compare, but it’s certainly worth trying.
Tried all of this for IPhone x but still cannot get my levels up. Using Sennheiser g2.
Hi. Thank you u have explained it so awesomely well. I had watch alot of videos on mic and sound, so far i am like liking yours the most. Will try your tips and hope to improve on my sound.
I love my dongle life.... (sarcasm)
i Do not get it.
it's interesting watching your videos on youtube. could you do a video on your studio setup? how you do video switching and screen grabs...?
I’ve actually done several videos on my live stream setup. Watch this video first https://youtu.be/aL1gV3yJvCM and from there, here’s a three-part very detailed look at my setup https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRe8DcOhgslp8kbjeTNG0S6KwR6_u_dyt (although it’s over a year old now and some details have changed).
Hey if you have a Rodelink it will be a lot simpler TRS to the transmitter and the TRRS to the Phone lightning adapter, without those adapter junks that takes up space and too hassle.
Yes mate i have tested that configuration im not expert in these things haha but i got lucky on first try without checking off youtube. Also I just found this you can check it out here this person also tried it as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG9Be_yYFH0
Have you used that configuration? I don’t see how the RØDElink is any different. You can’t go from the receiver into the TRRS-to-lightning adapter because the impedance is wrong and you get no audio coming through. Plus, the RØDELink is digital and in all of my testing of many digital mics, very subject to dropouts. I haven’t tested the RØDELink so maybe that one works fine but I’ve yet to find one that does.
I tried this with a cheaper wireless mic system, Azden Pro Wireless, and bupkus. It works with every other camera I have but not with the iphone
I of course haven’t tested them all. What I have used worked. But there are probably hundreds of options.
Yes. I watched that one, too. You seem to imply that some USB audio adapters may not work. Is it wrong for me to interpret your demonstration that way. Either way, I will know soon enough when I try other adapters I've ordered.
Try the one that’s linked in my video. Also I have an updated version of this video; did you watch that too? https://youtu.be/kiD4u4wNpuQ
PhotoJoseph Yes. I used a USB/Audio adapter from Tecknet. I ordered another one today to see if that makes a difference
You tired MY setup with the iPhone and it doesn’t work?
I have a iPhone SE
