We're back in the studio after a great trip to the NAB show in Las Vegas. Curious to know about anything else we saw? Feel free to ask below.

Got to be honest, I enjoy your show and you do offer great content, but it is hard for me to continue to watch when you are constantly pandering for money and support, it's just a turn off. I understand the concept of value for value, let your viewers pay for your Lynda.com training, or other training, but simply asking for money on almost every video is not the way to go. We see you traveling all over the country and the world, and yet you ask for money, how do you think that makes the viewership feel. They donate money to you to pay for your trips, not right man! You got to Build your channel, keep adding good content, that's how you make money, I have never watched another channel or another person just pander for money like you do, never scene Peter Mckinnon ask anyone for a donation, ever. I know for a fact that you make money with your channel, you make it on views, time viewed and ads, and ad clicks, so focus more on the content and BUILDING your viewership and the money will come and please STOP begging for it!
Thanks for the reply, I understand, btw, I really enjoyed your GH5 training on Lynda.com, well worth the cost, dollar for dollar, value for value!...still luv ya man!
Hi Genie. I appreciate your feedback, and since you've been so direct, I'll be direct with you as well. First, since you have 10k subs, you must know roughly how much money I make per month on ad revenue. But in case you don't, let me tell you… my last Google payment was about $350. So let's see… about four weeks a month, three shows a week, about three to five hours of pre production, production and post production per show, that's an average of about 48 hours per month (I'm being conservative), so that's a little over $7 per hour. Before taxes. I would make more if I worked at McDonalds. So no… I'm not making good money on this channel. Not by a long shot. And remember, that's the biggest payment I've ever had. The previous month's one was smaller… all the way back to when my google payment wouldn't buy a six pack of beer.

You say you see me traveling all over the world… yeah, that's mostly client work. Clients pay me to do jobs, and they pay for the travel. I don't spend money to travel just for my show -- that's an objective, yes, but that's a long way off. Occasionally I take a vacation (I hope you can forgive me for that), and I'm very good at finding cheap airfare and often capitalizing on the trip for a client (like my recent Slovenia vacation, which I paid only $425 per ticket for airfare, then managed to work while I was there, or last year when I went to Sweden, and again, paid under $450 per ticket). Always working, always hustling, always trying to earn a buck. No one donates money to help pay for my trips. That's ludicrous.

You compare me to Peter McKinnon. I'm honored. But Peter has 2 million subscribers. That's 133 times the subs I have. If that translates to 133 times the money, or even 100 times the money… holy crap, no I wouldn't be asking for money either. But look, his channel is very different than mine. I don't expect to ever get 2M or 1M subs. If I ever get to 100k that'll be pretty remarkable. My content is quite specific, quite niche, and nowhere near as general as his. Could I do a show like his? Sure… but then I'd be just another Peter or Casey wannabe. I'm doing my own channel, my own way. Mostly live, longer form content, and pretty vertical. I'm happy with a smaller audience, a dedicated audience, who feels like if they learn something from me, maybe that's worth something to them.

I'm doing this because I love it, but I also have to earn a living. Eventually maybe I can earn a living from this show. But I can't pay my rent with views. I need money. Actual money. I'm sorry you think I'm begging for it, but I don't see it that way. I very very rarely run YouTube ads mid show (like Peter does, since you are comparing), and instead run my own "house ads". I promote my training, my lynda.com, my affiliate store, and yes, my Patreon. Come to think of it, by your description, you're saying that anyone with a Patreon is "begging" for money. That's pretty sad. A lot of artists are making a living from that system, and they are asking for the money. Because, you know, if you don't ask, no one will provide.

I hope that helps you to understand why I choose to run my channel this way. Growth is very slow, but it's steady. And I'm OK with that. But I'm not a charity, and I don't have a separate day job. This is my job. I produce content; sometimes for clients, sometimes for myself to sell or upload to YouTube for you to enjoy for free. No one is forcing you to pay. There's no paywall. But I hope you can forgive me for trying to earn a living.
When I shoot in the studio, I just use the Wi-Fi to automatically transfer to my PC.
How was the blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k? It really sucks it doesn't have global shutter.
+Smart Halayla Looks interesting.
Will Panasonic Update the firmware to output ProRes RAW? Atomos CEO says its possible with a simple firmware update.
$500 is a lot but yeah RAW would take these cameras to the next level.
PhotoJoseph Just to add to this, I'd pay $500 for it as a GH5S only add on.
That would be incredible. It’s all still very new. I’m learning what I can and will do a show on it ASAP.
PhotoJoseph Nat accourding to Atomos CEO. He said due to apples new compression that it's actually less data and HDMI won't have a problem. I don't recall him saying anything about SDI only.
+Steve Holt Hmmm… my understanding is that RAW output required SDI. HDMI doesn’t have the bandwidth. If that’s right, then no dSLR/dSLM could do it. I’ll find out.
Hi Joseph Guy hete again. Just wanten to tel you About the WD mypassport Wireless ssd which i Just got. I wanted to get a gnarrbox but this gives me everything like the gnarrbox only half the price and more apps are supported so LumaFusion of course and filmicpeo records di==directly to the ssd. Cool
PhotoJoseph I see. Thank you for the explanation. I think it has something to do with the implementation of lumafusion. With filmic Pro for example it writes directly to the drive so it is possible to implement it better with WD. maybe you can talk to lumatouch about it ;)
The big advantage here for the Gnarbox + LumaFusion config is that you don’t have to copy the media over until you add to the timeline, and then it only copies the part you need. So if you shot a 60s clip and only add 5s to your timeline, that’s all that’s copied (plus a little for handles). It’s super elegant and keeps your iPad from filling up with unnecessary footage.
Flickr Pro — filmic Pro :)
PhotoJoseph good question. You can view directly from the drive via wd cloud app. Flickr pro knows how to save directly to the drive when you record a movie. Lumafudion can import directly from the drive into the ipad. Personally I like the import after viewing it in the special app as it makes for a supple editing experience
+Guy Rabinovich how does the editing with with LumaFusion though? Does it leave the file on the drive? Copy the entire file to the iPad? Cut out only the piece that’s needed?
