Balancing the Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Video Head Tripod

Photo Moment - June 12, 2017

Now that I've been playing with this Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Video Head Tripod for a while, it's time to talk about it — and show how to balance it! (Tip: throw away the manual)

You can use camera balancing weights on the front of the plate when/if you can't move it far enough forward and if the heads counterbalance is not enough.
excellent video!
I’ve owned one of these for almost 3 years now. Over this period of use I’m convinced that it is not a true fluid head ( at least when it comes to tilt axis). The cbs always drifts depending on temperature and sometimes for no reason at all.
Ive just got this head on sale, did anyone else experience a crackling/ popping sound when you take fluid out on the tilt? manfrotto said its trapped air but it hasn't disappeared yet after use? head is brand new
I agree with the comments below. This is the most helpful video ever!
I know I am late, but to look at the level just tilt the the camera forward, easy.
Design fault with level. They didn't think. They need to make an addition to slide into battery compartment that sticks out with a level on the piece of crap.
The live tests are awesomeee!!
Thanks!
Wow, great video man, thanks!!
thanks for saying so!
Thank you so much for this video. I've watched about 10 other videos before figuring out the silly plate that slides in. I have nearly thrown that tripod out of the window. You are ever so pleasant and informative to watch. Thank you again x
Thanks, and yeah this tripod is definitely weird. Cool channel by the way! Nice backdrops to test drive cars in 😯
Just got mine. You made my day, I was going crazy twisting all the knobs. Many thanks!
Sweet!
It's probably really good head for it's price, but calling it high-end video head is a bit exaggeration ;)
I've been using this head for 3 months now. Watched this video just to make sure I've been using it correctly. Great video, thanks a lot!. This is by far the best video head I've used. I've tested 10 different heads and none of them were perfect. Continuous counter-balance is miles ahead of any fixed or step counter balance systems.
Awesome thanks!
Great video! Quick question, how are switching to zoom as you mad the video
I’ve actually done several videos on my live stream setup, and I’m sorry to say that it’s much more complex than it appears! Watch this video first https://youtu.be/aL1gV3yJvCM and from there, here’s a three-part very detailed look at my setup https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRe8DcOhgslp8kbjeTNG0S6KwR6_u_dyt (although it’s over a year old now and some details have changed).
@photojoseph.. Would you recommend this video tripod for my GH5 video work? I'm looking to possibly replace my current Kenro carbon fibre tripod as I'm not happy with it.
Definitely. You get what you pay for.
Its hard trying to find a good fluid head video tripod these days for the budget.
They make several but I’m sorry I haven’t tested any other big ones. That’s a pretty good deal!
Thanks for your reply Joseph. Well, I have my GH5 in a Smallrig XLR cage with the Panasonic XLR adaptor, on top of the cage I have my Atomos Ninja Inferno. I do need a really good fluid head for smooth panning. The tripod is on special offer. Instead of £719.00 which is $944.31, I can get it for £570.00 which is $748.62. Do you know of a cheaper fluid head tripod from Manfrotto?
If you need smooth pans, then yes. It’s great. It’s bigger than you need BUT if you bulk up the camera (monitor, big lens, etc.) then it’ll still be usable. If you don’t need a really good fluid head, then you can buy less and spend less. Just depends on your needs.
This video saved my life. Thanks, dude!
u would make people not wanna buy it especially the way you're handling it, and not taking your time to make sure you're doing it right
@@photojoseph didn't mean it to be negative, l have watched your unboxing and depend on guys like u. U just appeared to be brutalizing 1 of the best heads out there lol Sorry sir, I think I just wanted u 2 handle it a little more delicately lol, thanks.
I’m not here to sell it to you.
It’s not an ad. It’s a realistic balancing. It was hard to do because it IS hard to do. Would you prefer I practice 100 times, make it look easy, then you buy it and get mad at me because I didn’t show you how hard it is to get right?
Hey mate, Just wondering how this set up is going? do you use it much for your work? thanks
The video head? That was on loan from B&H. I loved it but couldn’t justify buying it for my work.
Thank you for the quick response my brother and happy holidays to you and yours. To Stay and stick to what degree? I want it to stay where i plant it but could not achieve that luxury. I have that golden soft touch with the 504HD and was looking for something where it would make it a little easier as I age . You really did a great job showing but i could not produce any better than my trusty 504HD. If I have to spend 30 minutes to get a RCH improvement over what I have then Pasadena. Thx for your time and talent. Appreciate your video immensily. Love Manfrotto products but returning first thing Monday.
+UnitedSoundVideo Fait enough. If you’re able to go into the store maybe someone can help but if not, you tried! Cheers and thanks for watching!
After balancing and turning that knob round and round I was under the impression that when you hit your mark and let go of handle it should not dip north or southbound. It should stick and not move right? I've been trying to achieve this for 30 minutes and it's not any better than my older 504HD. Should this stop in position (freeze) when you let go of arm? Maybe cam too light. PXW-X70? Ugh. Going back to BH. Not their fault.
Hm, bummer. Maybe a bad unit? Sorry 😐
My major beef is that it shifts up, down, left, or right after letting go of arm ever so gently. It stays put but so does my 504HD at $300.00.  And yes it was balanced and then re-balanced. Not crazy about the side mount but probably would have gotten used to it. Returned to BH Photo. Thanks again for your time and talent.
+UnitedSoundVideo once balanced it will definitely hold any position. I set it up with several camera/lens combos. And remember I’m using small cameras! Unless your unit is faulty, I think it just needs more tweaking.
I'm so happy they changed the plate QR to being like pro O'Connor heads, it's so much easier
So, you need about 30 minutes to ballance it!
+user9 not at all
I think most people have the pan bar on the left side. That makes the quick release plate removal easier.
Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Most camera controls are on the right side. So controlling the tripod with the left hand works well..... if you are a right-handed yourself, otherwise it's all horrible.
+Matt Diver really? I always put it on the right… but your way does sound more sensible!
manfrotto recalled their n8 heads from everywhere every store, and re issued now , is that the one pevious to recalling? , i was about the order it but it b&h removed it, so i went with Miller Air
+Humza Yousaf B&H sent this before the recall, so yeah this is the original.
Love Manfrotto heads; not so much the manuals. Pictograms up the wazoo, but I get dizzy with all those arrows. This was a helpful review. TY.
+revon0521 Sweet! And I agree. The manual… sucked.
