Editing GH5 4K 60p Video on the iPad Pro with Lumafusion

Photo Moment - March 30, 2017

Did you know you can edit UHD (4K) 60p video on your iPad Pro?

If you own a camera, an iPad, and a lightning-to-SD Card adapter, then you have a VERY mobile editing studio. Obviously this isn't what I would use for every day production, but if you are on the go and need to edit your video footage, then this gets the job done.

Longhsot question since this is an older video: How do you transfer All I or 10 bit footage using this reader? I tried with all 19 different quality types, but the only ones that successfully transferred were the 7 different 8 bit quality profiles. The other 12 gave me the red ! Error icon instead of the green ✅. Thanks for your help! Your show is a great resource. FYI I’m using 128 gb Adata V90 card, GH5 firmware version 2.3, and iPad Pro 10.5 running iOS 12.
@@photojoseph Ran into this issue as well. Worked in iOS11 but iOS12 kills 10bit support in the camera roll. Only workaround right now is a 3rd party SD Card reader that can 'Share' to LumaFusion or a supported LumaFusion device like a Wireless drive with SD Card backup option. I hate it when Apple "upgrades" things like this.
8-bit or 10-bit that doesn’t work? Either way, CALL APPLECARE. These issues need to be reported by multiple people to get fixed.
Hey, I got the same issue here, and I have done some tests, I got my iPad 2017 and iPhone X, use the official lightning to sd card reader, shoot on FUJIFILM XT3, 4k 60p H264 200/100Mbps, can't transfer to iPhone X and iPad 2017 (show the red ! error icon), but downgrade to 4k 30p, it can transfer to iPhone X, but still can't transfer to iPad 2017, and downgrade to 1080p 60p/30p 200Mbps, can't transfer to iPad, but when down to 1080p 60p/30p 100Mbps, it can transfer to iPad 2017, so it's really a tricky issue, can't find any information in spec at website, I was going to buy the iPad Pro 2018 for outgoing video editing situation, but now I need to test it 4k 60p import performance at apple store first.
PhotoJoseph wow thanks for the speedy reply! I am a loyal subscriber and I will indeed stay tuned. Thanks!!!
I just ran into this. I think it’s an iOS limitation. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple Care and they’ve already called me back once just to let me know that engineering is actively investigating. When I get a resolution (positive or negative) I’ll do a show about it, so be sure you’re subscribed. Thanks!
That caffeine tough.
I need a budget YouTube camera
Should I get a g7
PS— use one of my generic amazon or B&H links at the bottom of the description, thanks!
Yes
Great video, thanks for sharing! A questions, is it possible to insert a letterbox in lumafusion? (Black bars) thanks 🙏🏻
Please edit out the stream stuff for YouTube release. I really like instant gratification. And you talk a lot while showing little information. Sorry for being terse. Love the content.
I get it… my turn to say sorry if I was being terse. I get frustrated by how many people ask for things that will take a LOT of my time and are offering nothing in return (not saying that's you… just a common approach here on YouTube). Editing these shows is not cost effective. I've tried several options, including hiring locally, outsourcing to other countries, doing it myself, and no matter what the edited videos get less views than the original ones, and either way the ad revenue from an entire week won't pay for the editing of a single show. So at least for now, what goes live stays up. I'm trying to reduce the duration of shows and split into a separate Q&A, which is working pretty well but some topics are just big and take more time. Thanks for watching and I didn't mean to offend if I did.
PhotoJoseph I'm an old shooter and live event switcher trying to set up an iPad editing system. I wouldn't be worth the money. Love the show. Just frustrated trying to find answers. I'll try your blog so I can ask directly. Thanks for the reply.
+Paul Henry If you'd like to be my full time editor for no pay, then I'm happy to give you the job.

Looking at sd cards I see UHS ii saying 150 mb/s and 300 mb/s. What do you recommend? After the firmware update are either going to be fast enough/both?
Great show, i'll definitely take a look at Luma fusion. It is interesting that the GH5 offers auto ISO in manual and that they decided not to include it in the G85. For me trying to build a very light, low-cost, high performance vlogging rig it would be a perfect fit. If I do buy the GH5, which is likely, it will be for my professional work and probably not something I would take out to vlog with, so it almost seems like they got that the wrong way round for me :-). At the moment I tend to use Aperture priority with auto ISO and hope that it is smart enough to keep the shutter at 180 where possible but I also find it annoying that it doesn't tell you what settings it has chosen when in auto which would be really handy.
OK, thanks for that I'll give that a try. Andy
+apntv Oops, hit send too soon. I would recommend shooting and shutter priority, and setting the shutter to 180°. Let it choose the aperture and the ISO; it will likely default to the wider aperture. Obviously some experimenting is in order, but that would be my choice.
+apntv I agree that it's annoying that it doesn't show you which settings it is using. That's something I need to bring up with Panasonic.
Hi, I can't seem to find the option to shoot MP4 video at 50Mbs. It only seems to shoot it at either 100Mbs or 28Mbs. That's a shame. Will Panasonic be adding this option as its available on the GH4?
+JV I honestly don't know. I'll try to find out.
Great stuff. I see LumaFusion can also be used on an iPhone. My question would be, how do you get the project off of your iPad or iPhone and into your computer? Thanks
Yes, just hook it up to your mac and move to the photo app, ok. Of course you could go wifi but was thinking of some sort of wired connection. Silly question I guess, but have never transferred video from my phone to the mac. Thanks
+VanoRama RV Oh I see. According to the App Store description:
• Easily share to the Photos app, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or “Other App” including Airdrop to your Mac
Thanks. Yes, I caught the EDL comment. I guess the question is more general and basic. How would one export any movie out of a phone or iPad?
+VanoRama RV That's what you can't do yet. I said in the video they are already testing EDL export though. That will be amazing.
Does the GH5's auto ISO ramp smoothly? This is something I leverage on my A7s when shooting run-and-gun video by keeping a heavy ND mounted for exteriors then just letting ISO ramp when I move inside. Also, regarding the iPads Pro, only the larger one supports USB3.0 speeds. The 9.7 iPad Pro support USB2.0 speeds. I returned my 12.9" unit for the smaller one last year primarily due to size (the 9.7 is so much easier to travel with), but I do miss the faster transfer speeds.
+Kūlia LLC That's a good question; I'm sure it's not as smooth as an ND; after all there are steps in the ISO but that would be a great test. And thanks for correcting me on the iPad; I didn't know that. Glad I got the big one then!
COOL! is LumaFusion multitrack? if so, how many tracks of video? Would really like to see more about it. Do you store the video files on the iPad or are they straight from the sd?
+Jacobo Castro Cristo three tracks and from the iPad (only iOS can access the SD card reader)
Thanks for this wonderful tip. I have the mini Ipad. I am wondering if I can use it with LumaFusion. Thanks again.
Thanks, Joseph.
+Chef Rachida I'm sure you can use it; perhaps not with 4K though. But the app will work!
Received my GH5, today!:)
That is incredible what you can do on an iPad these days. IPad & GH5. What a portable video production studio. :-)
Hey Joseph, I wanted to see if you'd had a chance to play with Blogstomp. Do you think it's a worthwhile application?
+Big Jake I have not, sorry
link?
LumaFusion is at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lumafusion-pro-video-editing-and-effects/id1062022008?mt=8 (sorry just getting this sorted for the description now)
Hi Joseph, Witch app can we use to edit video in iPad in "prof way" ? Thanks a lot
Thanks
