Getting the Most from Your Camera’s Custom C1/U1/1 Modes

Photo Moment - April 19, 2017

Pretty much every dSLR or dSLM worth its weight in dental floss has custom settings. But are you taking advantage of them? Most people leave them completely unused… a barren, unexplored setting that's probably “not for me”. Let me show you how and why you should be using this option!

It took you 5 minutes to even begin to talk about the custom settings. Perhaps you should acquaint yourself with the timelapse function so we can skip all that irrelevant stuff.
All your tutorial is too long
These are all live shows. Live shows are longer.
Hi,I am using your preset GH5 setting ,very interesting thank you dear
can you send the extracted firmware up to date 'bin file 'for my I mac .
i have a problem with extracting the zip file ,I downloarded from the web .I hope you can send it for my I MAC .waiting for that .Thank you ,,
Hey Joseph, great instructions for custom settings. Can you please do button remapping at some point
+simianinc Check out this video :-) https://youtu.be/JbEJz3qW2CU
Another excellent session, Joseph. Thanks. I have one major beef with Custom functions on the GH5, however. Whenever I call up one of my saved Custom settings for my video shoot, I will always tweak something-white balance, aperture, etc.-and I understand that turning the camera off and then back on will set me back tomthe original saved settings of that particular custom set. BUT, they also reset when the camera awakens from sleep! That is so counterproductive and negates the battery saving conveniences of sleep mode. What is the best way to communicate this to Panasonic? It's driving me nuts!
+Rob Reiter Really? That's interesting. I had never run into that. I'll look into it.
I've set up my GH5 to shoot HDR but try as I may it does not show the bar indicating it's stacking the pictures. I hear the three exposures being made but no recognizable adjustment. Am I missing something?
PhotoJoseph ok. I notice the progress bar when I hit the replay button immediately after the shot. I guess the difference is that you have the immediate replay in use???
PhotoJoseph I see one single exposure so it seems to have been stacked. I never see the progress bar that shows in your video.
+Colin Bent Hm. You hear it fire three shots; what do you see when you hit play?
PhotoJoseph I have HDR and it is jpeg as HDR could not be turned on without jpeg. Must say I am temporarily stumped.
+Colin Bent Are you just bracketing or have you actually set up the HDR shooting? Remember it's only available once you set to shoot JPEG only
a tip. instead of using the self timer, use shutter delay. that way you can program that into the custom setting.
+Tor Ivan Boine Great idea!
Hey! Have you heard anything on false colors?
+Adam Rickman no sorry
(Video issue) But I have to set WhiteBalance for every Custom Mode manually over and over again when switching between those modes. It would be much more useful if I could set up a "Master Custom WB" for all Custom modes. Get the idea? Is that possible? Thanks
Yes, the C modes are great but could be so much better. There’s a lot of potential in there.
If I set a custom WB to C1, C2 etc. it is set. And there is no way to change it. Sure I can renew my WB on C1. But when I go to C2 after that I have to work with an old WB Setting. If I get back to C1 my WB setting is gone as well. So if I use the GH5 for filming you use C1, C2 and C3 to shoot in different framerates normally. But you have to work with Auto WB then. It would be SO(!) useful to have on "Custom WB for C-Modes". So you set the WB one time in a location and can use it for all your presets. Got the idea?
There is no "master" when it comes to the Custom Modes. That would defeat the purpose of them. Yes it could be handy if you could say "save all settings except WB" but that would be a UI nightmare. But are you saying that your custom WB settings aren't being saved in the C1, C2 etc. modes? Please elaborate.
Sorry for bringing up ND-Filters in your live broadcast about custom modes. But I thought maybe there is a solution for having to close the aperture in the custom modes, like HDR for video (I'm not sure if that's possible on the GH5). Well I don't have a twitter account, so I can't tweet you the link to the cheap ND-Filters I bought. But I bought this set http://a.co/85CXX9K (actually not from Amazon US, but another site with free shipping to the Netherlands). These filters are so cheap that I have a feeling they may not be as good as in the review I saw. I deliberately did not buy a cheap variable ND-filter, which seemed to me technically far too complicated to produce cheaply. The colour on these cheap ND-Filters maybe a bit off. But I figured with a white balance card I can compensate for that. If the ND-filters turn out totally useless at least you get a second lens Hood and lens cap in the set. And the UV filter could serve as a lens protection. ;-)
Great show about custom modes, very useful! And also thank you for the information about the colour shift that may occur with a ND-filters or variable filters. After writing the above I already had a nagging feeling that the WB may not help with that. Well I will stay away from variable filters for now otherwise the learning curve will become too great ;-) Learning all the functions (like the custom modes) of the GH5 is already quite a big task, and I also added a new challenge for myself by just now installing VLOG on my GH5 ;-) But in due time I will figure it all out and otherwise I know where to find one of your lynda.com courses :-)
Thanks. Color shift is different than WB shift and WB won't compensate completely. Different color spectrums are affected differently by the glass; WB is a universal shift. Also variable filters can change the colors as you adjust the variable… so that really sucks.
I use the custom buttons for Weddings. 25fps/50shutter/4K and tungsten WB for ceremony/speeches and then HD/50fps/100 shutter and daylight WB for the rest of the day :) (HD as i'm still on the GH4 for now)
Hey Gareth - I like the idea of the C-Buttons so much - but I think it is a waste of potential that you cannot set a "Master WB" - meaning Set 1 White Balance for all C-Modes.
Great explanation....again. I set my GX80 up last week as C1 L Monochrome.C2 Landscape, and C3 portrait mode. I really appreciated your explanation of Photo Stacking, what a great feature. Keep up the great work.
Why use self timer when you can shutter delay? It works much better. Thanks for the great info though!
Have new GX85. Please explain shutter delay and the difference from timer. Thank you.
Great show, made me think about what I might use mine for. Somebody mentioned in the live chat they use theirs for VFR mode since there's no quick way to turn that off and on otherwise.
