How do you balance the foreground and background light?

Photo Moment - October 13, 2016

A viewer wrote in with a specific shot problem they want to solve. We have the photo she created, and looked at how to achieve what she's after! This involves balancing light between the bright background and dark foreground.

Hello,
Very good technically explained video. Please a have a question.
My friend has samsung S8 and when he take a photo of a subject with the sun behind the subject, his phone is able to do background and foreground both properly exposed, without using flash light in evaluative metering mode.
I can't get this result on mu Canon rebel t5. Insane!
Could you explain please how is that possible?
Canon camera and lenses must be better than samsung s8, isn't it?
Thanks!
Google “computational photography”. That will explain why the phone so good. Yes your Canon is still better — but you have to work for it.
