Good video, but it's too long. Try to keep information in to 20 minutes.
Yes sir
Hello, great video. I noticed you use a lot of BM. I tried the BM Microconverter HDMI to SDI and found them very unreliable for sound... great for video but a lot of static for sound. How are you getting such clean sound?
Interesting; I haven’t had any problems but I don’t use them for sound at all. All my audio is handled separately from video. It goes through a Behringer X-Air 16
Another wonderfully informative video. Thank you! Now, on to part 3.
Thanks again for the video! Great stuff. Looking forward to the third one and will check out your other videos and lessons on Lynda.com
Question which router are you using ?
Very helpful thank you for taking time out to answer my question.
Oh I see. The router is just an Apple Airport; nothing special. However I’m upgrading to Cisco Meraki hardware which will allow data prioritizing which will make it even better.
My apology's iv'e should have been more clear in my question. I was wondering what router you was using to maximize your internet speed. I would imagine your internet router would be beefy seeing your live stream are so high quality and theirs no lagging. Thank you
Router for what, sorry… video? ATEM 2 M/E. There’s a video on that in this same series.
Good job ! Nice video !
🙏🏻

Thanks for your answer!

Joseph, I'm an amateur audio engineer, I am the technical arts director for my church. I run the audio console for our weekend services. All to say, you can, if you wish, ditch the small mixer for your ears and run all from the Yamaha. If you run your xlr from the atem into your open channel on the MG12XU.. you can punch OUT the ST and 1-2 buttons on that channel (down by the fader).. this will disable sending that channel's audio to your main outs. Then punch IN the PFL button and it will SOLO only that channel (from the atem) and send to the phones for your iem. May simplify your setup slightly, and eliminate a potential point of failure (the second mixer).
PhotoJoseph No problem. Love the show!
Ack I didn't get this set up for today's session. I will try for the next Q&A, on 2017-05-08
You bet!
Oh wow, that's very cool. Man for a non-audio guy, those mixers are quite complex. I will try that, very very cool thanks! Also I'm going to tag this for the next Q&A session; I won't set this up in time for tomorrow's (4/17), but by 2017-05-01 I will and will bring it up there: https://youtu.be/Wpo-gBxEnrg — thanks again!
Love your Videos! What lens did you use for your wide shot? Greetings from Germany!
You are quite modest, and definitely very informative. Great job on your vids, and all of the hard work.
This series on studio setup helps a lot of people and helps us understand the scope and complexity of what you do. You have a much better level of understanding and control over your systems than you humbly assert-- i know from my own experience what it takes. After many months of research, Q&A and experimentation, I went with Blackmagic plus Wirecast (plus, plus,... as you know how it goes).
BTW, i spent 5-10 min almost every morning for about 3 months learning to speak over a delay channel to help with meditation (like active Binaural beats), and WOW, what a challenge, but huge benefits for my mind and meditation-- not that I recommend this to anyone I care about (kidding). I can now often do things like listen to a third party conversation while speaking and listening. The mind is amazing.
Thanks so much again.
Great show. Any time you want to talk about lights and sound for an hour plus is fine by me. I agree sound can really make or break a video or any kind of performance with a audible component. You definitely have learned how to do it well. For what it's worth, I think for what you do the lav works great. The big condenser mic will of course produce that bigger, better sound, but I think it's only worth using that if you're actually making a high quality audio recording like a voiceover or radio-style program, something where the sound is the main feature. Since you're usually wanting to use your hands and the space on the table in front of you to show off a camera or piece of kit or some photography technique, the lav is much less obtrusive and certainly sounds quite good.
+PhotoJospeh The boom mic may be technically better, but it's either less directional or placed in such a position that it's picking up more noise from around the room, specifically what sounds like your computer fan, and I expect other sounds as well if there's noise leaking into your studio from outside. The lav sounds like you're just here in the room with me talking. It picks up your voice but nothing else really, and I assume since it's a lav it's been optimized for the human voice. The boom mic sounds like I'm in your room hearing you talk, and hearing everything else too. The Heil gives you that nice cardioid directional sound so it's only getting your voice and it's certainly nicer than the little lav, but it's obviously a lot bigger and in your way. I looked it up and it's apparently not a condenser as I assumed, but a dynamic mic. Still, seems like a really nice one.
+Hurba Provisual I also have to be right on the Heil so it's non-starter for a show like this. Does sound good though ;-)
+fakecubed I haven't gone back yet to compare when I went through the three mics. I gotta do it… lav that much better than the boom?
You're right Fakecubed, I know. Joseph is always holding something or showing something and the lav makes more sense, but that Heil sound...
