I do not understand this question. White balance and metering are two different things.

If you're using flash, then yes you need to fire that to set the white balance. That is your light source.

X-Rite is one of the companies that do pretty much only color balance work, so you can consider what they say reliable.

• The light gray reference allows a lower light reflectance level to prevent over-saturating the camera sensor.”

Essentially, what I said. If too bright, all colors will read pure white 255/255/255. But one of those could actually be brighter yet the camera would not know.

I think you're both right. Your white balance setting in your camera does affect RAW files. When you import your photos into Lightroom, for example, the white balance will show up as whatever setting you had it on when you took the photo. For white balance, shooting RAW is nice because you have tons of room to correct the white balance or adjust it to your desire. In contrast, shooting in Jpeg does not give you that much room to adjust white balance in post. Personally, I haven't found grey cards or white cards to be much help when setting white balance.

Uh, custom white balance absolutely affects the RAW file. I can’t imagine why you’d think otherwise. Shoot a series of photos in RAW+JPEG at various WB settings and both files are affected.

But the only white balance you will affect is the JPEG. Doing the in camera WB only works if you are outputting JPEGs. Where the cards will matter is when the model holds it and you click and sync the rest. Or putting the card on a stand in a church a few days before a wedding to get the general lighting.

1. Because it is better to do it in camera. Especially under extreme situations

2. Because “fix it in post” is a crappy way to shoot. Get it right in camera as much as possible.

Thanks for showing me a better way to custom white balance in Canon, but no thanks for 15+ minutes of blabber and customer "questions" taking away time / money. Prolly best to re-post this video edited down to just the topic in the Title, in under 10 minutes. Because everyone (including yourself) are so time-pressed, no one has time to shit through 34 mins of blabber only to get to 7 minutes of gold.

Yeah, I know this was a live stream, so improvisation and some few idiots asking questions were unavoidable. But when your other (newer) video says "see my other older video for why we need a grey not a white card"...then we search and search through your large List of old videos...only to find 34 minute long behemoth...some of us are like..."Whoa! Will this cut to the chase or not?" So we hesitate, (losing time / money), put it off until later (due to the 50 other browsers of important stuff we need to watch, like Dr. Susskind's Stanford lectures on Supersymmetry & Grand Unification course on the LHC physics)...and then we come back to it...only to find blabber blabber blabber, wait wait wait...until FINALLY you show why the grey card beats white caucasian whatever, lol.

So based on a limited sampling so far, your other white bal video with the filter thing was good...to the point. But I guess some of your older videos like this one could've used some editing down to the chase, because that's what people search for, hoping for a quick answer. So don't be surprised if some of them go bonkers in disappointment...because actually, it seems u have good stuff.

Here's a catch-22: respect unto other's time as you would want them to respect unto your own time. Well, that would mean you would have to spend extra time editing a crappy "live stream" to a more clean-cut efficient shorter one that does not disappoint Seekers. So you're stuck spending more time! So does that mean we are not respecting your time by asking you to edit down the blabber to cut to the chase? No, because you'll get far more subscribers by releasing Quality, not Quantity, and will save time for yourself and everyone happier at the same time! Then you can go to Jollybee's and try out some fast food rice and chicken, lol, courtesey of the Philippine invasion. (You know, Metallica, Journey, Wayne's World, etc.).

You'd be totally happy to know, my grey from 2$ white-grey-black set gave 7200K for 4550K determined in AWB...no comment, just wantin'n to shoot someone, lol,

I just had a real bad gray lastolite card to old and really gave a hard time on color balance I new it was not my strobe I double check both camera and then I decided to use my
Gray card from whiBal to white balance I did not have to fill frame
And my white balance was perfect.
With lastolite old 6300 K with whiBal
5450 k I shot first AWB of course then I set it as alway on custom
I cannot believe that amount of difference from a bad Gray card.
Just sharing my experience.

your comment suggests that this is what we learn from the video (in short), which is misleading. Since the video suggests to use grey card for both WB and Exposure. Consider making it clear that this is your opinion and not the summary of this video ;)

Ahhhh... grey card for both! proper exposure will display exactly in the middle of the histogram; proper white balance [color balance] will display the rgb right on top of each other [in the middle]. Awesome video, but I agree that it's a bit long.

Not really. Even white not entirely white surface and the rgb not really accurate. But grey does.

+cobblesticks White balance is white balance and in video you always want to get it right in camera; unlike with RAW photos, correcting in post is destructive. As for vlog, I will eventually start doing stuff on that but not for a while. Got a lot of other topics with broader appeal to cover first. Stick around though and don't be shy about asking again!

+EzzenzDK Proper tethering on the GH5 is coming in a firmware update (summer I think? I may be wrong). Tethering today is a hack and a joke. It can be done but it's slow as hell http://www.promotesystems.com/products/USB-Tether-for-LUMIX.html if you desperately need it. If you're shooting product photography I'm sure it's fine, but if you're shooting anything fast paced, I think it's pretty poor. This is changing (finally) soon though.

I white balance for every single shoot in the studio, and as for being out and about, I only do custom WB if I feel I need it. Usually I'm in auto though.
