Stop-Motion Animation on LUMIX Cameras Using the GH5

Photo Moment - May 17, 2017

Many LUMIX cameras have a built-in “stop motion animation” feature, allowing you to easily make those fun Lego movies at your dining room table. Let's have a look!

What if you don't want to use the onion skin how do you turn it off?
On the LX100 as well.
Thank you so much for this.
I am having much trouble with light flicker with my Panasonic g95
Nice! All I need now is to be able to preview the shots taken. a fast preview button
AWESOME...ALL THE BEST JOSEPH FOR 2022...REALLY NEAT DUDE....
Can you use a timer on the stop motion? Like a 2 second delay before the picture is taken?
Please watch the video — I cover delay between shots around 6:30
Thanks Photo Joseph!

Sorry for this late comment, but only just discovered your video, which is very clear and useful. I own a GH4 which has the same feature on it (which I only discovered thanks to you) however, I can’t seem to build the movie once I’ve shot my frames. Onion skin works fine, window appears « end shoot ? » ok, but no window After that asking if I want to build movie with the frame rate settings to choose from etc... Do you have any idea why? Tried contacting Panasonic for help, no reply. Thanks if you see this and can help in some way.
Is this feature available on the Leica sl2 or 2s since Leica?
this is awesome! I thought only the gh4/5 had this feature but i just checked and my G9 has this as well!!!! i used to do stop motion when i was young i might just get back into it
It's so much fun!
Silly question.. can you tell me what stand are you using for your camera?
Not silly at all! It's homemade… just a piece of plywood painted black, and a ballhead mounted to it!
PhotoJoseph: so most of the older canon don't have the onion skinning ??? i was gonna buy a Canon Eos T5i wonder if that one is capable? ty for the info
I have absolutely no idea, sorry… i suggest you download the manual for it and look there; camera user guides are always online
oh wow i didn't realise the gh4 had this! This is going to revolutionise my videos
Does the LX100 II have all the same options as this?
The first version of LX100 has it, so I guess the answer is yes.
I am set to stop motion with auto shooting off but I don't see the three layers icon like yours and have no onion skinning. Can you summarize what other settings need to be in place for the overlay view? Thanks
ok so I'm late to this video, what is that camera "platform" on the table you're using? I haven't seem that one.... btw love your videos :)
Awesome!
Thanks!
Great video, thanks a lot.
you’re welcome!
Doing stop motion by pressing on the camera button will never lead to any good result. Remote control is the only serious option you have to make anything watchable.
OMG 20mins! Speak less, just show more!
I realize it’s extremely difficult to tell, but this was a LIVE show.
Damn bro just get to the fuckin point 🙄🤦🏽‍♂️
It Is posible to adjust the onionnskin?
Use sugru on your coffee cup.. Before it sets, you can level it by applying pressure while you have it on wax paper or foil etc.. Sugru is very good to have around.. Works well with camera gear and Legos!
haha awesome. Yeah, that stuff is great… I do need to get some!
Actual tutorial starts at 12:23. This is like the Lord of the Rings Triology of tutorials.
30 seconds worth of information condensed in to 20 minutes.
Tutorial starts at 5:45
Never said it's a problem. But to be honest, you chat so much before and during and after that it adds up to a lot of wasted time. The video itself could have been about 2 mins. 3 with your self promotion.
And the problem with self promotion is what, exactly?
and then after the self promotion at 11:03
Great video! I'm going to be doing some stop motion with a project on a GH5s and did not know it was capable of that layering affect. Plus I like how you're able to convert it into a video right there in the camera instead of messing with it in post.
It really depends on the look you want. If you want it to look like stop motion, then yeah 10fps is good. The more you add the smoother it'll be!
Also is there a general rule of thumb for stop motion, I've heard 10 FPS gives you a good animation affect. Didn't know if you had any opinion on that.
sucks that you have to buy the gh5 to use dragonframe. i wish they had better support for the lumix g7 or even the gx85
Does this program work with gx at all?
Thanks for doing this. I have a GH4 and a GH5. I had no idea this feature was in there.
Nice!
cool
How were you controlling and previewing the camera from the computer?
PhotoJoseph wow, fast reply, thank you 😁
trying to set up to do stop motion, but the cam just keeps shooting video. I have the dial to M and other function to the last stop motion dial circle setting. what am i doing wrong?? also, the cam keeps defaulting to 1250 iso and putting stabilizer on? i restarted it as well. it also keeps turning back from stop mo into time lapse when i hit the front
I like do Animation what's the best one for that
@@APPLEPIE521 I have a Panasonic HC-v380 and it has a stop motion animation assist function.
+Sam Fitzpatrick I believe all LUMIX cameras will do the animation.
sorry I use a camcorder right now i can't find any camcorders that i can do Animation in what's the best one.
+Sam Fitzpatrick Not sure I understand the question
hi there, this video is very helpful, thank you for the instructions! i have a little question: is it possible to use onion skinning in video mode too? this would be helpful for maybe do magic tricks... lets say i make a clip where i would like to make appear something in my hand, so i shoot a clip with my emty hand, then i go grab something, put it in my hand and position myself again on the same position (with help of onion skinning) and hit that rec button again... this is what i want to do. is it possible to do so? maybe with an app or so?
TobiLotta - DIY Kinderfilme ’
+TobiLotta - DIY Kinderkanal Cool idea! It's not a feature in camera though. You would have to shoot separately and blend in an editor like Final Cut Pro or Premiere.
I love my GH5 it is really the most versatile camera Ive owned..
Wanted to say thanks for this vid. I attended the session live and was inspired to create a stop motion video for our channel right after watching this.I published our first stop motion video on our channel today and have some great ideas for the future.

One thing I learned after I made the video was you should lock your exposer to prevent light flicker between shots so I now have that set to my lock button for easy access.

It's definitely a lot of work but you can really do some cool stuff with this. Thanks again!
+Fun With The Bugs Oh that's a great point, thanks!
Hey Joseph, great video again. Couple of quicks questions. What's the difference between using this (Stop Motion) over the Time Lapse feature, is it just the onion skinning? Wondering if this would be better for manual hyper/time lapses. Also, can you choose 24 and 25 fps for the video (didn't see that option on your screen/demo). Thanks!
+cobblesticks The differences are onion skinning and manual triggering (animation only), longer duration between shots in time lapse (max on animation was 60 seconds; in time lapse it can be a full day, maybe more). Time lapse the camera will actually go to sleep and wake itself back up between shots if they are far enough apart. And 24/25 wasn't available because I was in 29.97-NTSC mode. Switch to 24-Cinema or 25-PAL and the other rates would become available.
Onion skinning is indeed really cool. It could also be great for doing a manual hyperlapse (just moving the tripod forwards). It's only available in the stop motion mode isn't it? Not that that will be a problem because a manual hyperlapse with more than 60 seconds between shots will be a pain anyway. (of course you can always push to shutter button manual if 60 seconds is too fast for setting up your next shot.)
+Floris sweet! Be sure to share when it's done!
Yes, and this video of yours comes just at the right time. As I just finished a script in which I planned a hyperlapse in a forest where I wanted to see the shadows of the trees move while going forward one foot (literally) each frame on a path. If I hadn't seen this video and I would gone straight to the obvious time lapse mode. I'm sure that will safe me a whole of a hassle to be able to align the trees/path with the previous frame. I may not even need (much) stabilisation afterwards in post. :-) And if I set it to 60 seconds, one second of video will be already around 30 minutes in actual time, so I think I will see some shadow movement in that time. :-)
+Floris That's the only place I've seen onion skinning, yeah. It's cool huh!
@PhotoJoseph Is it possible to retake/remove/add a frame of stop motion if you mess up?
Joshua Yes, you can hit the play button to see your pics and you can delete them. When you exit out of playback you are right back to shooting your stop motion where you left off.
