No, there are not actual Zebras in your camera. Zebra striping, in the photography world, refers to the camera sensing the amount of light in the exposure and how it displays it to the photographer. It helps you control how “exposed” the shot is. PhotoJoseph also covers a bit of Focus Peaking.
Hey Joseph I think you are the only one that can answer this in the GH5 when you buy the vlog, and start to puting custom luts in the gh5 does the hdmi out also have the lut burned into it? I was messing around with 3d lut creator and made this custom lut but i dont trust the reliability of monitors that can burn lut because they sometime make errors so i heard, what im trying to do is live stream a church event to my atem but to also have the custom lut in the live stream
That’s a choice in the camera. You can choose to have “LUT preview” on the LCD and/or HDMI out. So you’ll want it everywhere.

Suppose you're exposing with V-Log, should you still set the zebra to 70 IRE for skin tones? I've read somewhere that it should be at 42 IRE. Or did I confuse things? Thanks Joseph!
Hm maybe 42 is wrong then… again check the Leeming LUT site, they have info on that. (I don’t use zebras when shooting Log; I just watch the waveform carefully)

No, shooting log is totally different. 42 sounds about right but check it. The “Leeming LUT” website has a great tutorial on shooting Log. Your highlights will clip at 70 on the weveform monitor.
No offense but you need to get to the point, I havent been able to sit through even one of your videos. You go on and on and on and on about things that dont matter to us.
More than 5 minutes goes by before you say anything related to the title of the video. Just constructive criticism here, make sure you don't lose people coming in the future for help (like me). The guide recommend for CineD to set the Luminance Level in 64-940 (10bits) instead 0-1023.
I want to use Zebras to get a correct exposure, in Standard Mode the maximum available is 105% and I usually choose for Clipping 100% and for Skin Tones 65-70% for caucasian.
But then when you change the Luminance Level in CineD to 64-940 the Zebras only reach a maximum limit of 95% for Clipping.
Wich values need to be setting for Clipping and for Skins in CineD ? 90-95% for Clipping and 60-65% Caucasian?

Interesting question. I never shoot CineD so can’t comment on that. I shoot V-Log. You don’t need to change the zebras, correct… just set it to whatever you like for skin (I tend to go 65 to 70 I think) and watch the waveform. In V-log the waveform is most important. I’m always exposing based on that, and actually often just turn zebras off. Since they show up at such a low point, a lot of the scene gets them in bright light and I find it annoying. COme to think of it, I probably use them more at 95% to avoid clipping, and watch teh rest of the scene on the waveform.

If you use 70 and set your exposure to have the zebras it means you are well exposed, the correction to 75 is useless. (It seems to correct it thinking the zebras are set to 70+ when there are set at exactly 70.
I don’t understand the statement. Different shades of skin will register at different zebra levels as overexposed.

PhotoJoseph I believe It's useful for exposing log, where small increments in ire correspond to relatively large differences in stops compared to linear profiles..
Interesting. I must be missing something though… the point of a zebra isn't to show a range of exposure, but to show a limit. A ceiling, if you will. When you see those stripes, you know you're overexposed. Or you can use it at ~70% to identify flesh tones at the right exposure, but you're still looking at a limit. How would you use a "window"? If you set a window from 69-71%, does something at 72% show without a zebra? How do you know if that part of the image is 72% or 68%?
PhotoJoseph It's 50% to 105% except hlg (goes up to 95%) and vlog-l (up to 80%)..window ,I mean the range of zebra..if we select 70% ,to be able to set it more precise..like to show from 69-71..Sony has a setting for that..I think it calls it zebra aperture setting
I don’t understand the question. Don’t know what you mean by “window settings”? You can set zebras on the GH5 from a low of maybe 60% (would have to check; don’t have one in my hands) up to 110%.

Interesting view of coping with setting the right exporsure on skin tones.
However, to my humble opinion, setting the right exposure on skin tones by reading the waveform monitor is much easier once you understand the technical aspects of the waveform.

Monitoring your image through studying the waveform also helps you set a proper lightning for the scene as a whole.
Photographers are quite often not familiar with reading waveforms but it certainly is worth understanding and learning how to.
If you are familiare with the waveform monitor, I may suggest you tackle this topic for our fellow videographers.

Luv your channel mate, I'm down under in Australia in Brisbane so don't get to watch live as that is 2am or 3am down here. We're like 14 hours ahead. I pre ordered the GH5 a couple of weeks a go from an aussie (pronounced ozzy) company. It is bundled with the V log grading. Can't wait to shoot with it. Excellent stuff - I can't believe it was forty minutes long. I've used peaking on dedicated video cameras in the past, but have never got around to trying it on one of these - I'll give it a try over the weekend when I'm shooting a wedding.

Thanks for the good explanation of the zebra stripes. I have been playing with them while practicing macro stacking on white shells. I use a manfrotto led light for the close up stacking. I turn down the dimmer till the stripes go away on the shiny parts of the shells that get over exposed a lot quicker than the textured parts.
This is really cool - I didn't really know much about zebras and now I do. Just a follow up question but could you do this with the skin tone of on your hand for example? Seems like that might be a cool option if you're generally shooting scenes outside and need a reference point. Just so you don't have to point the camera at your face to set things quickly.
+TravisMoore sure as long as your hand is the same tone though. Many people's hands are darker than their faces — they get more direct sun.
Joseph, are you using (or have you been earlier) a monopod when you are shooting video? In your opinion, is there still any use for monopods with the great IBIS + lens IS? Same question for those handheld pendulum-based stabilizers. Are those actual for GH5 + IS lens? Just want to hear your opinion on all that.

Hi Joseph, a quick GH5 question. I recently bought a Lumix G80 (G85) and get very frustrated by the record indicator on screen which flashes on and off during record. Now there is a second data indicator on screen that comes on during record but that can also stay on after recording has stopped while it writes the remaining data to the card. I think this flashing feature is crazy as on a number of occasions I have glanced at the screen, not seen the record light and pressed the record button again, stopping the recording. Grrrr.
So, does the GH5 also have this annoying feature or can it be set to stay on constantly during recording? I believe the GH4 did this too, I am not sure who ever thought this was a good idea :-) I have owned many pro video cameras over the years and I don't think I have ever seen this before. Andy

FuzeDznI'm not sure if you have VLog on your GH5 Joseph, but unless you use the VLog View Assist to check your exposure, you will need to set different levels for zebras

FuzeDznI'm not sure if you have VLog on your GH5 Joseph, but unless you use the VLog View Assist to check your exposure, you will need to set different levels for zebras
