The Panasonic LUMIX GH5 is one of the most hotly anticipated cameras in recent history. The GH4 broke new ground and the GH5 looks to do the same. Details have been scant since the announcement by Panasonic at Photokina 2016, but here just after the CES 2017 press conference, a new video was released showing many more details on this camera. Does it do what YOU want it to do??

I have the GX85 but I've noticed I'm a little cautious with it out and about (beach, hiking) and am wondering if I should invest in a more weatherproof body? Is there another option besides the GH5? I'm not into video that much :)

The G85 is basically a GX85 in a weatherproof body. There are probably some other differences but that's what I recall from when it was launched. And probably costs half the GH5.
Joe - does GH5 post focus in 4k or 6k or both?

They tax 4.9% and more for video cameras; still cameras with video recording functions of 30 mins or more are classified as video cameras for tariff purposes. That's why there's the 29:59 limit. Certainly other shorter limits are related to overheating issues, but the 30 min limit is related to EU tariffs. The US does not have such a tariff.

+Lance Guilin I don't think any shipping LUMIX cameras have the 30 minute limit (in any format). Even the pocket ones. So this isn't new for LUMIX. I think Panasonic is just starting to make a bigger deal out of it.
***** There's no clear answer to your question. I've asked the same. It's most likely a business decision to make it uniform across the world -- but then they have the stupid different naming convention for the same camera model -- so that Europeans don't feel cheated. Or, and most likely the case, all these brands have professional level video cameras that they'd rather you buy if you truly want to record unlimited 4k video. I guess @ $2000, Panasonic thinks it's time to allow this segment of buyers to have unlimited 4k? :-) Let's see how Sony and Canon reacts.
+Lance Guilin Thanks for that and yes feeling much better (not all better, but, you know…). Ok so then why do we have 30 minute limits on cameras in the US if it makes no tax difference? To avoid grey market sales from US to Europe? Maybe if other manufacturers didn't charge so much in the first place their customers could just accept the 5% tariff. Or likely more to your other point… this allows them to conveniently ignore their overheating issues :-)
Joseph I have a question for you. I was about to invest in a DSLR (currently have a couple of Panasonic Bridge cams). My interests are nature/wildlife photography and I am off to South Africa in September 2017. But this camera excites me. Would this be a good buy for me ?
+Paul Ost Oh hell yes. Considerably less weight. Much lower cost for equivalent lens performance. You know what… let me address this question specifically in a video on Monday. I have a topic for tomorrow set already.

Do you know about the HDMI regarding speed? Many have claimed that HDMI 1.2 can't truly handle 4K. Could be misinformed, and maybe it's a stat bouncing around the echo chamber, but thought you might be able to set the record straight.

UHD @ 30Hz and full 4K @ 24Hz came in HDMI 1.4 in May of 2009.
Complete UHD/4K support didn't even come until HDMI 2.0. In September of 2013 (eight months before the GH4 shipped). And Panasonic has confirmed for me that both the GH4 and GH5 use HDMI 2.0 :-)
So wherever you're reading that 1.2 doesn't support 4K, while accurate, is clearly irrelevant.

Right on. Lots of folks have said it's not a "true" 4K over 1.2, just like lots of folks are now saying the Canon 5D3 was never "true" 1080. If you think it's the real deal, that's all I needed to hear :)
+Ben McCartney Hm, I don't know what version is on the GH5 but I do 4K over HDMI on my GH4 every day. 4:2:2 10-but to a Ninja Assassin.
When using 6K photo do you need a huge amount of light to accommodate the higher shutter speed? More so than 30fps for video?
+Ben McCartney At 30fps that's still 1/30th of a second or faster to record a full exposure to a single frame. So that's not very fast. But to freeze motion; sure you'd need a higher shutter speed (and therefore more light), but no more than if you were shooting stills. Think of it like shooting stills, that's all.
Great video! I didn't know you were a Panasonic guru, I though you just used them :) I think the USB-C is needed for users of the new MacBook Pro, which has no SD slot.
Oh for sure there are people that cares. I certainly care and will give all of them shit for dumping the SD slot but it is true that most users of ultrabooks aren't serious photographers. They're most likely phone camera users who upload their stuff to the nefarious cloud then download to their notebooks.
+Lance Guilin It's not for charging AFAIK and definitely is' for data transfer. I didn't realize so many notebooks had ditched the SD card slot. I'm an Apple guy and I guess like usual, if Apple does something propel don't like they get infinite shit for it, but when Lenovo, HP etc. do the same, even first, no one cares :-) That said, it has the potential to data transfer very very fast.
Wonder if the USB-C is just a charging port for the battery. But if it's actually for data transfer, it certainly won't just be the MBP that doesn't have SD slots. All the latest slim line ultrabooks on the Wintel side all do NOT have SD card slots anymore. I recently purchased a Lenovo Yoga 910 and it has NO SD slots, neither does HP Spectre x360. It's annoying they're getting rid of the SD slot on the notebooks but as the ultrabooks shrink further down in size, that's a slot that's deemed non-critical, guess similar to what Apple did with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Great update Joseph. I paused your video half way through to go and pre-order from B&H. I hope from XLR add-on has VU meters for audio feedback.

Wow. Just watched the B&H video with Sean and I'm even more blown away. The firmware update path over 2017 is crazy. This camera is a game changer.
+Scott Gorman Big thumbs up! It truly seems like a remarkable camera. I've been told the DFD focus is better than anything on the market. Don't know if I believe that but any improvement is very welcome. And the XLR add-on appears to be very well suited for audio. Watch the interview on B&H with Sean. It's great.
