Should You Custom White Balance on a White or Grey Card?

Photo Moment - March 14, 2017

Creating a custom white balance in-camera is easier than ever. But should you use a white card or a grey card to do it?

It's amusing that people bitch about Canon's Custom White Balance (CWB) method when it's literally one of the easiest and fastest ways to do a CWB.
Does the white target affect the metering and WHY THE HELL IS IT THERE?
I do not understand this question. White balance and metering are two different things.
Works a treat with mixed lighting ;-)
Super super helpful! Answered all my questions lol
Cannon rules.
Well I guess between 4 minutes to 9 minutes of this video was related to the title of the video...The rest I could not watch
Outstanding explanation of the meaning of "white balance" with respect ot a given "white" or other neutral color subject.
Just a little input on another brand most have not heard of, Pentax. Adjusting the WB is also more convenient than Canon. You take a photo with a grey card located in it and then you select the spot on screen that the grey card is located in the camera draws the info from that single spot. This makes it super easy since you don't need to fill the entire screen with the grey card.
Question....when taking the photo to set the white balance, should I use a flash? I always use a Digibee 400 when taking photos. BUT - should I use the Digibee when taking the photo to set the custom white balance?
@@photojoseph Thanks so much for the reply :)
If you're using flash, then yes you need to fire that to set the white balance. That is your light source.
Great video, Joseph. Question - what video mixer/switcher & streaming software do you use? Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!
@@photojoseph Thank you. I'm building out a (most likely) much simpler version, so I'm excited to see what you have done. I'm looking at using OBS most likely to try and keep costs low while functionality still fairly high (I hope). Thanks again!
I’ve actually done several videos on my live stream setup, and I’m sorry to say that it’s much more complex than it appears! Watch this video first https://youtu.be/aL1gV3yJvCM and from there, here’s a three-part very detailed look at my setup https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRe8DcOhgslp8kbjeTNG0S6KwR6_u_dyt (although it’s over a year old now and some details have changed).
Is that a 24” grey card? The link is to a 12” which seems a bit small.
Thanks, Joseph. I now have one on order.
Oh sorry. Yeah 24” sounds right
Jesus Christ, get on with it for fuck’s sake!
🤷🏼‍♂️
No, I’m a grown man. I don’t kiss my mother. I also don’t make 34 minute videos to explain a relatively simple concept.
You kiss your mother with that mouth?
any video tutorial on setting custom wb with ocf?
No, but it’s no different. Just make sure the flash is on and where you want it when you do the custom reading.
I don't get it: one of the most important issues/topics in "camera technics", especially in video or shooting jpg stills, and currently 131 likes... Well, whatever. Excellent tutorial. Thank you, once more, for your time and effort, Sir!
Well, there you go... next time here, let me know, Helsinki is where I live!
Thanks, yeah it’s making progress. Slow, but growing. And I love Finland. Actually some of my family tree extends there. Helsinki is great!
True I guess... still you got almost 20k subs, so it's pretty awesome! Quality info you provide, imo, so thank you for that; I've learned a ton for sure. If you ever find your way to Finland, let me know and I'll try to make it worth your while!
Thanks… it’s hard to get noticed on YouTube :-)
The best tutorial on the youtube to learn how to make use of custom white balance correctly period !
Thanks!
My Sony camera manuals say white balance against a white card and never mention about grey card. And now you say grey is better. I am confused which to use. What say you on that?
X-Rite is one of the companies that do pretty much only color balance work, so you can consider what they say reliable.

This is from the sales page on their white balance card https://www.xrite.com/categories/calibration-profiling/colorchecker-white-balance

“• Produced as a light gray target, the ColorChecker White Balance target creates a more spectrally neutral sample.
• The light gray reference allows a lower light reflectance level to prevent over-saturating the camera sensor.”

Essentially, what I said. If too bright, all colors will read pure white 255/255/255. But one of those could actually be brighter yet the camera would not know.
Why are you calibrating at all in camera. If you are shooting RAW it doesn't matter it will AWB.
I think you're both right. Your white balance setting in your camera does affect RAW files. When you import your photos into Lightroom, for example, the white balance will show up as whatever setting you had it on when you took the photo. For white balance, shooting RAW is nice because you have tons of room to correct the white balance or adjust it to your desire. In contrast, shooting in Jpeg does not give you that much room to adjust white balance in post. Personally, I haven't found grey cards or white cards to be much help when setting white balance.
Uh, custom white balance absolutely affects the RAW file. I can’t imagine why you’d think otherwise. Shoot a series of photos in RAW+JPEG at various WB settings and both files are affected.
But the only white balance you will affect is the JPEG. Doing the in camera WB only works if you are outputting JPEGs. Where the cards will matter is when the model holds it and you click and sync the rest. Or putting the card on a stand in a church a few days before a wedding to get the general lighting.
1. Because it is better to do it in camera. Especially under extreme situations

2. Because “fix it in post” is a crappy way to shoot. Get it right in camera as much as possible.
Repeating this from a reply...my grey card from 2$ white-grey-black set gave 7200K for 4550K determined in AWB...no comment. Canon 400D, in the room, daylight, summer, today actually.

What lumix did you use in this video?
You blabber on about nothing
@@arthursulit ...but you have the "time" to type this long review .... ????
Thanks for showing me a better way to custom white balance in Canon, but no thanks for 15+ minutes of blabber and customer "questions" taking away time / money. Prolly best to re-post this video edited down to just the topic in the Title, in under 10 minutes. Because everyone (including yourself) are so time-pressed, no one has time to shit through 34 mins of blabber only to get to 7 minutes of gold.

Yeah, I know this was a live stream, so improvisation and some few idiots asking questions were unavoidable. But when your other (newer) video says "see my other older video for why we need a grey not a white card"...then we search and search through your large List of old videos...only to find 34 minute long behemoth...some of us are like..."Whoa! Will this cut to the chase or not?" So we hesitate, (losing time / money), put it off until later (due to the 50 other browsers of important stuff we need to watch, like Dr. Susskind's Stanford lectures on Supersymmetry & Grand Unification course on the LHC physics)...and then we come back to it...only to find blabber blabber blabber, wait wait wait...until FINALLY you show why the grey card beats white caucasian whatever, lol.

So based on a limited sampling so far, your other white bal video with the filter thing was good...to the point. But I guess some of your older videos like this one could've used some editing down to the chase, because that's what people search for, hoping for a quick answer. So don't be surprised if some of them go bonkers in disappointment...because actually, it seems u have good stuff.

Here's a catch-22: respect unto other's time as you would want them to respect unto your own time. Well, that would mean you would have to spend extra time editing a crappy "live stream" to a more clean-cut efficient shorter one that does not disappoint Seekers. So you're stuck spending more time! So does that mean we are not respecting your time by asking you to edit down the blabber to cut to the chase? No, because you'll get far more subscribers by releasing Quality, not Quantity, and will save time for yourself and everyone happier at the same time! Then you can go to Jollybee's and try out some fast food rice and chicken, lol, courtesey of the Philippine invasion. (You know, Metallica, Journey, Wayne's World, etc.).

So, in exchange for taking up my time, I hope I took some of yours, lol! Enjoy!
My new best friend :-) Thanks for the support!
You are an example of everything that’s wrong with social media. It gives ignominious toads such as yourself the courage to say things anonymously that you would never dare say to a fellow human being face to face.
Another satisfied viewer!!
This answered lots of my questions. Incredibly this topic lends itself to heated comments from those that insist that you don't use gray to set WB. Your explanation is logical. Thank you.
Thank you!
Joseph you are an amazing teacher. Amazing. Thank you
Thank you!
You don’t need to fill the frame as long the gray card is full on the center of frame that where the balance occur. I have check this and recheck with Canon technical support several time. Just like to share it and yes gray is Better.
You'd be totally happy to know, my grey from 2$ white-grey-black set gave 7200K for 4550K determined in AWB...no comment, just wantin'n to shoot someone, lol,
I just had a real bad gray lastolite card to old and really gave a hard time on color balance I new it was not my strobe I double check both camera and then I decided to use my
Gray card from whiBal to white balance I did not have to fill frame
And my white balance was perfect.
With lastolite old 6300 K with whiBal
5450 k I shot first AWB of course then I set it as alway on custom
I cannot believe that amount of difference from a bad Gray card.
Just sharing my experience.
All the best keep on shooting :)
+Cesare Bonazza I thought so but never looked it up… thanks for sharing!
Extremely helpful. Thank you!
Grey Card for exposure, White Card for White Balance, SIMPLE.
your comment suggests that this is what we learn from the video (in short), which is misleading. Since the video suggests to use grey card for both WB and Exposure. Consider making it clear that this is your opinion and not the summary of this video ;)
Ahhhh... grey card for both! proper exposure will display exactly in the middle of the histogram; proper white balance [color balance] will display the rgb right on top of each other [in the middle]. Awesome video, but I agree that it's a bit long.
Not really. Even white not entirely white surface and the rgb not really accurate. But grey does.
mamiyapress thanks. over 30mins for that info is too much! i like the short videos better and glad he is moving in that direction
On my Nikon the white balance works similar to Canon which is a bit long winded... I like the "video style" of doing white balance on the GHx cameras
Thanks again. Just interested to know (basic question) how would shooting in V-Log effect White Balancing, still the same process? Also would love if you could do a video on Good/Correct Exposure when using V-Log. Thanks
+cobblesticks White balance is white balance and in video you always want to get it right in camera; unlike with RAW photos, correcting in post is destructive. As for vlog, I will eventually start doing stuff on that but not for a while. Got a lot of other topics with broader appeal to cover first. Stick around though and don't be shy about asking again!
Thank you for doing a video about this! I actually got the same card (soft), just a bit smaller. I will use it for setting exposure and white balance from now on :) Something else that I have been wondering. For my little studio room, I purchased standard Philips LED light bulbs. But they flicker in videos when shutter speed is not set to 50 or 100. Anything better that's on a budget? Might be an interesting video topic?
Nice!
+PhilsComputerLab Hmm, that could be an interesting topic. Budget (i.e. light bulbs) for lighting in video. OK, I'll put it on the list!
Hi Joseph
How about making a video on tethering on the GH4 / GH5 and how to go about it?
Thanks Joseph - I have the "USB tether for Lumix" for my GH4, but I think it is slow. Hope it to be faster on GH5 with USB C :)
+EzzenzDK Proper tethering on the GH5 is coming in a firmware update (summer I think? I may be wrong). Tethering today is a hack and a joke. It can be done but it's slow as hell http://www.promotesystems.com/products/USB-Tether-for-LUMIX.html if you desperately need it. If you're shooting product photography I'm sure it's fine, but if you're shooting anything fast paced, I think it's pretty poor. This is changing (finally) soon though.
Easy custom whitebalance is one of the reasons why I prefer to use my Panasonic G85 over my Sony a7rii.
Yes. The problem with using a white card for a custom whitebalance is can easily overexpose and therefore not give an accurate reading.
If you are not creating a custom white balance will the white balance squares on the ColorChecker Passport do a similar job when creating a custom profile in Lightroom??
+TIA OAT in theory, yes. However in practice, I have found it's always better to white balance accurately and camera then to try to do it and post.
Should add an Amazon link to the gray card you prefer, I'll buy one. And not sure if you covered frequency you white balance?
Joseph Linaschke must have missed it, apologies and thanks.
It's in the description: Impact QuikBalance Collapsible 12" Gray Panel: [B&H - https://bhpho.to/2lZnp3D] [Amazon - http://amzn.to/2mGM4hJ] — that's not the same one I have but we couldn't find a link to it.

I white balance for every single shoot in the studio, and as for being out and about, I only do custom WB if I feel I need it. Usually I'm in auto though.
In relation to the GH5 - as far as I know none of the UK retailers are expecting to have them until April. That's just affording to the place I preordered from though. They said they'd update me on when they're due to be in stock but I haven't heard anything yet so I assume it'll be awhile.

Thanks for the info on white balance :)
Ah good to know - I hope it's similar in the UK, the sooner the better really ;)
TravisMoore my retailer in France told it will be here in the first week of april !
