My ❗Illegal In Most States❗ In-Car Vlogging Setup

Photo Moment - April 18, 2017

Whenever I'm in the car and want to record some video, I'm never prepared for it — so I came up with something. This isn't a permanent setup, but for road trips it's pretty sweet!

So apparently these suction mounts are illegal in a LOT of states in the US! But, hardly enforced… check out this link for more info and if you get pulled over, you can NOT say "PhotoJoseph made me do it!" ;-) : http://blog.proclipusa.com/are-suction-cup-windshield-mounts-legal-in-your-state/
As much as I loved the setup, truth be told I think you would have been better off just mounting the phone to your windscreen! It even has a mic input...<3
Only thing I can think of off-hand is that the smaller sensor of a M4/3 camera might be less light-sensitive than a fullsize Sony, making the shutter speed slower: My understanding is that many drone pilots, etc, get rid of jello in their footage by putting ND-filters on their GoPros (which in turn makes shutter speed slower). Of course, this shouldn't make the phone footage more jello-y...
If I was setting up a permanent in-car camera, I definitely would get a new GoPro 7. The sample auto-smoothing footage is incredible! For the jello-o effect, it’s much more noticeable in an iPhone than a LUMIX. I don’t think it is sensor size, because I’ve seen samples of full frame Sony with worse wobble. The answer is “I don’t know why”, but in my experience, it is way better on LUMIX.
Hello Joseph :) My comment was prompted by the shot you had from your phone, I liked how it looked. In fact, I especially liked how the background outside the car looked and had a better "in-car feel".
Regarding the screen, the way I feel about it, recording myself in a car without one works fine - I have done it a lot with GoPro cameras and since I'm always driving while sitting in my seat the shot only has to be framed once. Granted, the GoPros are very wide angle, so very easy to "shoot blind", but, again, for a stationary camera and subject - I'd think it to be a manageable task :)
Regarding the jello I'm curious as to your comment: Why would this be a bigger problem with a phone camera than with the big camera in your video, a dashcam, a helmet cam, etc?
Yes and no. First of all, if I wanted to be able to see myself to frame, that would restrict me to using the front facing camera which is nowhere near as good. Second, and more importantly, the bounce of the car would put quite a lot of jiggling to the image. You end up with a very Jell-O image shot that way. And finally, the dynamic range of the iPhone isn’t anywhere near as good, so you have a lot more blown out backgrounds.
I have question about why the GH5's LCD panel won't fellow color when I adjust the aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. I can't see the right exposure before I press shutter button.

VLC allows also to extract frame from any video it can display
Try to use Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate
Will you be updating your GH5 Lynda.com video when the new Camera features(400mbps) come out?
+Steve Holt Making updates on my own package for sale will be easier than to Lynda. I can submit new videos but they may take a long time to get added. That said I'm not sure how much there would be to do a video on that's unique to that bandwidth other than a discussion on what you can do with it or side-by-side comparisons?
thank for the video. Can you give links under video ,for adapter to power the gh5 and g7 from the wall? And can you tell Panasonic to make new version of g7 with the same GH4 GH5 battery because pleople want to keep the same charger and battery setup. Thanks
Please, consider including (in your new course) usage of a Shogun or Ninja Inferno with the GH5. Above all, about the implications of doing this for the auto-focus side of things.
As I mentioned in live stream live chat, there's a simple and really really really cheap setup for live streaming that exchanges for a lot expensive devices like VidiuPro etc.
Device is called LKV373A Tx (transmitter), main purpose of this device is extending HDMI via ethernet and delivering it to LKV373A Rx (receiver).
But, Danman, a hacker/blogger, https://blog.danman.eu/reverse-engineering-lenkeng-hdmi-over-ip-extender/ found out that this device is not only "converting" HDMI signal to ethernet, but it does whole lot of work in it for $40, it's taking any video that you input via HDMI (SD, HD and full HD) and sends it compressed via ethernet using UDP multicast or unicast protocol.

As this device can't stream by itself to RTMP service (YouTube, Facebook, Livestream, Ustream etc.) you need to "copy" that stream using FFMpeg open-source software on using any Linux machine, for example old notebook, Raspberry Pi 3 etc. and send it to your desired service.

You can choose bit-rate (max 15Mbps) at which LKV373A device will output this stream.

So far, this setup worked really great in my tests, and making it the cheapest and easiest way to encode and stream video while for example offloading your PC to do the hard work (encoding and streaming).

PhotoJoseph, I'd gladly like to talk with you, or via e-mail about more stuff related to live streaming and maybe making your live stream workflow simpler with more features and great stuff and of course more professional :)

Great shows, keep up doing them! ;)
+vedranart right on, thanks!
Maybe not that easier. But when you set it up and run it become easier setup compared to any Teradek products. Teradek VidiU, Cube etc. you need to setup everytime, not sure if it's live, sometime it works sometime it doesn't, you're not sure 100% what's wrong etc etc.

With this kind of setup you exactly know what's going on, and this LKV373A is a workhorse, when plugged in, it works, it doesn't ask anything, it doesn't need anything to change to run or whatever, plug HDMI, power and that's it.

Another way to do it without that part with FFMpeg/Linux/RPi3 is by using VLC or free OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster) with VLC plugin and directly input UDP stream to it and bam you have 40$ capture card!

Hopefully I'll do some video about it all. Will share when I do it :)

Thanks! :)
Thanks for all this! Cheaper, yes… easier? Doesn't sound like it ;-) I think this sounds like a great DIY solution to streaming but since I'm interested primarily in the photo/video side of things, and really only want to talk about streaming as it pertains to my show (epiphan being a bit of an exception), I think I'll pass on your offer. But thank you, and if you do a video around this yourself, I'll gladly promote it.
For a cheap and simpler vlogging setup I'd go with a action camera like GitUp Git2 or Xiaomi Yi 4K+ (Yi4K 2) because those have a mic input. Xiaomi Yi 4K+ also does live streaming in full HD to any service (YouTube, Facebook etc.) so that's a plus. Only downfall is that it doesn't have flip-screen but you can always use your smartphone to see what camera sees.
These cameras can be powered by USB so need for special AC adapters, same as GoPro. Tho, not sure about Yi4K+ if it can be powered via USB and at the same time to have plugged in microphone as it uses USB Type-C connector for both.
If you'll be going to NAB, you can check XiaoYi's booth out there!

Also, for POV full HD live streaming check hands-free camera Vyoocam running Android that can be attached to anything but mainly any glasses! http://vyoocam.com/ :)
oh nevermind, that comment was in spam. Published now.
Thanks for that. I just looked at them, definitely a cool and simple solution. I couldn't find an AC power adapter option though? Also what was the cheap streaming solution you mentioned?
I recognised that suction mount you used in your car. It looks like the one we have, a Gecko mount. Look here (not affiliated): http://www.delkindevices.com/product/fat-gecko-mini-mount/
That does look like the same one, thanks!
