Regarding the zoom lens you mentioned. What do you use to control it? Is it blackmagic prouduct or something universal. Also does it just plug into the LANC port?
This is an ancient video but if you saw me controlling zoom from the camera then that was an Olympus 12-50 motorized zoom.
What zoom system were you mentioning?
ah… yeah the only lens I have that is motorized is that old Olympus lens. It's mounted somewhere I can't get to now but I'd suggest just googling "olympus motorized zoom lens". There aren't many to choose from.
This video is nearly three years old… can you put that in context please? Zoom lens? Zoom.us web conferencing system? Zoom recorder?

Anything that zooms taht much won’t be great quality and will have a variable aperture. I much prefer fast fixed aperture lenses for the these BMD studio cameras. They look great at native gain (ISO), but as soon as you gain up (i.e. increase ISO but it’s called gain on these cameras), the image goes to shit pretty quickly. If you’re looking for general purpose zooms, I’d get the 12-35/2.8 and 35-100/2.8 from Panasonic. Buy older used gen 1 lenses as you won’t get the benefits of the newer Mark II lenses, and save some money.

Can I use this camera even without a lens? I mean, if I don't have a lens, would this camera still be able to give me a clear output video?
Charles Emuze Be sure it’s a fast lens because this sensor isn’t great in low light, and if a zoom, get a constant aperture so your exposure doesn’t change as you zoom. Probably best all-around zoom for broadcast would be the Panasonic 12-35/2.8

Without a lens, the sensor still records light but without any focus. The image is mostly bright white could be mushy whites and greys.
Can this camera be used with EF lens and If yes where to get the adaptor?

Bro I just subbed ur channel after I saw such a different approach to broadcast gear, thank god you didnt throw all ur money on 160,000$ Red cam coz that would just hog up so much post prod time. I dont have the budget to spend as much as you and for screencast tutorials I dont really need to, all the very best to ur endeavour, may G B you!!
What's the autofocus like on this camera ? Is it at least better than on the Micro Studio Cameras ?
PhotoJoseph that's pretty much my current setup : a Sony A6000 with its HDMI feeding into a capture box. It works quite well for my needs but I'd like to upgrade to 4K and I somehow expected professional cameras to "work better" than a "mere" hybrid camera. Fact is, I've even figured out how to remote control the A6000 and its power zoom from a PC... but it has just whetted my appetite for something more pro. But maybe broadcast studio equipment isn't what I actually need. It's so hard to choose... It's nice people like you are here to give us insight !
Yikes. Do you need realtime video? If you can get away with HDMI to SDI conversion, there are plenty of cameras with great AF and you can attach a big HDMI monitor too.
PhotoJoseph interesting. I'm really looking for a 4K studio camera in that price range but I really need continuous autofocus. It seems that I'm out of luck. I might have to design my own solution based on a laser rangefinder and Blackmagic's SDI Arduino shield... problem is, that gadget is only 3G SDI...
Actually yeah, it is. But we still rarely use it. It doesn’t track (no AF-C), but it can be helpful to grab focus on something kinda quickly… as long as that something is in the middle of the screen. Focus peaking isn’t as aggressive as I’d like either, but being such a big screen it’s pretty easy to nail focus.
Hello - like to get some advice from you if I could: I am going to pull the plug and rent three of these cameras to do a live switch using the Olympus 12-40mm f.2.8, Olympus 12-100 f4 (both manual lens) or the Panasonic PZ 45-175mm f4.0-5.6 servo lens with the Manfrotto lanc controller - we have a fiber Blackmagic workflow with ATEM 4k switcher. The biggest complaints I have seen with this camera is the crop factor and low light issues. Any suggestions/opportunities you can offer based on your experience and use. We are in a controlled Studio like environment for our first time out with this cameras so we can throw some decent light at the stage. I wanted to try it in this environment before doing our typical corporate gigs that often have issues with having enough light or being 100 feet away from the stage. As a frame of reference, we normally do our live shoots with the Sony PXW-Z150 or PMW 200 cameras. Thanks for your input!!!

Well, no gain is best. Up one notch is acceptable. Above that I don’t think it is. As for the LANC controller, I ended up not using it on my rolling camera since the lens I use doesn’t have motorized zoom, and AFAIK all motorized zoom lenses are variable aperture which doesn’t work for me. My lens on there is the LUMIX 12-35/2.8.
Many thanks!! At what gain setting have you found to be the most acceptable if you had to use it? One more quick question - any advantage to using the Manfroto Pan Bar LANC remote with this camera if I am using a manual lens?
Low light is definitely an issue. When you gain up the cameras the image quality falls down pretty quickly. Also if you shoot 4K be sure to turn sharpening all the way down. Don’t use the variable aperture zoom or you’ll have to have it st 5.6 the entire time to avoid exposure shifts as you zoom (unless you’ll have enough light for that!). You can’t script zoom from the ATEM into a Macro. That’s about it!
Awesome review! i found it really helpful. I'm currently using a 4K Micro camera like you, would you suggest upgrading to this? i heard that the studio camera has 4k60fps, which is kinda essential for me, would you say this is all true? could you record using the 4K video assist?
Just looked up the specs… so the micro does 1080p60 or 2160p30… the regular studio apparently does 2160p60. Sorry for the confusion. My bad.

Yes you can, but my micro does 4K60… you sure yours doesn’t? The screen is nice for sure but unless you need it as a rolling live camera with an operator, I think it’s cheaper to buy the micro and a screen/recorder. Remember none of these cameras have built in recorders.

Thank you for the reply and details. These are the exact concerns I have with the camera! I would need to buy at least a $5k lens.
I did. So it works, however there’s two reasons I don’t use it. One, all the motorized zoom lenses are variable aperture and really slow at the long end. Two, the zoom can’t be built into a macro! My thought was I’d have macros set for wide and tight shots, but you can’t do that. You have to zoom manually (from the software yes, but still). So, I killed it. I’m using fast glass so I get a little bit of bokeh in the wide shot.

Awesome! No differences, no. I think they are the same camera although Blackmagic won’t say either way. Yes I can control zoom using an appropriate lens but I can’t build zoom into a macro. Here’s the lenses that are supported (click the little triangle to reveal the list… bad UI here when it first loads): https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59009 — notice they’re all variable aperture lenses though which sucks for this use.

+Jens Wilhelm I swap them around depending on the setup but the 12-35/2.8 is always on one of them. Using the 25/1.4 on the in-studio camera now. Overhead has an old Olympus, um, don’t recall exactly but it’s a kit zoom variable aperture lens.

That camera is a waste for what you are trying to do. And Tally lights don't just work because they are on the camera. It's more to it than that. For what you are trying to do you would be much better off with something like the Sony PXW-X70, which in 4k would run you $2400 complete and comes with a great lens. I think your solution will work fine for you. As far as the monitor, the Sony has a much more high resolution very accurate monitor. The BMD camera has a bigger but crappy monitor. That said I think your config will work well. I have shot with 4 of the Sony's all synched up and they work great. The operators love the LCD. What would be beneficial is if the cameras had talk back intercom built in. Maybe your cameras and switcher do? That's the biggest issue in a multi-camera shoot. And really good wireless intercoms are expensive. The Sony's are also a better run and gun camera, making it a bit more diverse. I shoot a lot of music shows, not music videos. The Sony X70 will give us 4K which I don't need right now, at least not for streaming. The linked clip is shot with Sony EX1_R's which still is hard to beat in both image quality and low light performance. Again communication between cameras and director is my biggest issue, more so in loud environments. +Al Gardner I can control the color balance, exposure, and even zoom from the ATEM on the Blackmagic cameras. Plus copy color profiles across multiple cameras. The Sony has a tiny LCD so I'd have to buy a big monitor to catch up to that. Not saying the Sony wouldn't work, just that I have more advantages with the Blackmagic. And how would the BMD camera become obsolete more quickly? They are both UHD cameras. I don't need it to do much more than be in sync and pass an image to the switcher, once it's all up and running.
The camera does not cost more when you factor in a really good versatile lens. Please explain why it won't integrate with your switcher? The advantage is a 4K camera with a much more versatile lens. Black Magic cameras become obsolete real fast.
