New RØDECaster Video — SHOCKINGLY good!

Photo Moment - September 24, 2024

The newest addition to the live streaming space has me all kinds of excited… this RØDECaster Video is an extremely impressive piece of hardware. But, is it better than the ATEM Mini Extreme or YoloLiv YoloBox Ultra?

The missed opportunity is at least allow the ssd recording to record the 4k from the cameras even if it streams in 1080.
that's right. Assuming of course that your camera can record 4K while outputting 1080p. Not all cameras will allow internal recording once HDMI output is enabled. Just depends on what you've got!
@
right I understand, so you could record in camera on SD cards then just offload them
That’s not a “missed opportunity”. I think you’re misunderstanding how the mixing works. The entire chain of processing would have to be 4K, from the HDMI ports to the scalers to the image processing to the graphics engine to the encoder. At that point, streaming in 4K would be trivial. If you want to capture 4K while streaming, then you’ll need to record 4K in-camera or insert 4K recorders between each camera and the RØDE.
Not really a Yolobox killer becasue you need to lug around a monitor or computer for it. For the people that do Mobile streaming and want to be as portable as possible, this isn't it. Still very cool.
Very cool. Starlink seems pretty great and reasonably priced, but I've never used it.
@photojoseph  I guess I'm one of the few people. I'm actually starting up a service to stream from the middle of nowhere places using starlink as an uplink. Was thinking about the idea for awhile but the tech was cost prohibitive
100% — if you do mobile streaming. I’d argue that very few people actually stream on the go. Most stream from an indoor, fixed location.
It would be very interesting to know if it has the possibility to embed a video mixer widget chat youtube directly and not with third party apps. Thanks
@electricexperiences you don’t need a computer to stream. Only for some of the setup but definitely not to stream! And really, you can do all the critical work on the device itself.
@ I'll explain better.
I would like to live on the YouTube chat video. It would be enough that he had a “youtubechat” widget without using pc/mac. Because I live on board moving cars.
You mean like a plugin for the RCV that displays YouTube comments? That’d be epic.
Can you pair the RodeCaster Video with an ATEM Mini to cover the things that the RCV can't do, like green screen? I have an existing ATEM Mini Pro and was considering getting the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO but maybe the RCV would be a better purchase in this case. Could you do a video where you could use the 2 together?
Thanks. It has a very good and easy keyer — but you can’t apply a key to a video it’s playing back.
@@photojoseph You're right, I skipped to the part where you talk about what's missing, and you say there is no reasonable way to play videos with transparency, so I assumed you can't use a green screen. I have seen that Aaron Parecki found a workaround, but just thought that since I already have an ATEM, I could use that. My bad, I'll go back and watch the whole video.
Unless the RCV gets bitfocus Companion support then combining them would be tedious. However the RCV does green screen (chroma keying) — sound like you didn’t watch this full video 😉
I wanna run more then 4 cameras
Then you should look into ATEM Mini Extreme.
Do you recommend this for two camera set up visual podcast and also live streaming of social events with multi cameras from simple user friendly and price point of view or any other product?
I definitely recommend this. If it’s in your budget it’s extremely capable and easy to use.
Great video. I would also mention that a big miss is that the ISO video recording is limited to 30fps even though you can set the program to 60fps. For my purposes that is a disqualifier
@James-dm8hs the RCV doesn’t record in 4K. I don’t understand the comment?
Is it? I hadn’t tested that; that’s curious. Where did you come across that info?
ISO recording and the project file are literally the things that hard lock-ins for me. Until a competitor can give me an editing project file. Atem it is 😂
Fair enough!
For the auto switch...If i have a rodecaster pro 2 as my audio input through usb c which clumps the mix into one track, is the only way for you to have auto mixing through the xrl's through the rodecaster video or rodecaster video audio inputs? I guess what im asking, lets say i have a three person podcast im mixing through the rodecaster pro ii, the auto switching feature really doesnt work well unless the audio inputs come from the rodecaster video, right?
@ dude, you’re the man. Thank you! 🙏
That’s why you can use the audio from the cameras (audio input on HDMI) to trigger the switching, but not actually use that audio in the mix!
Yolobox Ultra vs Rodecaster video vs Osbot Talent please!
Yolobox Ultra still the king mainly due to big screen and Replay feature
You could be right!
I suspect a Mk2 model with more HDMI or even SDI inputs could make me take the plunge. For now it feels like a very good ATEM Mini replacement but I'll stick with my Extreme and Yolobox Ultra for now. The Yolobox Extreme if they get it right, could outdo them all. If they could all launch an XLR adapter too though.
Do you know if you can export the video files to a network drive remotely? So that a team of editors can grab the files and edit from other locations
You can not, although that seems feasible. You should suggest it to RØDE!
Can you explain if it is possible to this device to not upload the music track to VOD on twitch as is made in OBS ? it will be very helpful and I am sure it will be interesting :D
your response is making my head hurt. I said "This doesn't upload, it streams" and you responded "I’m surprised you weren’t aware of this, but it’s also a streaming device". Huh? I mean, if you watched this video, you know that I know it streams. As for the Twitch thing, it sounds to me like the Twitch background music thing is something you do on Twitch , not in your switcher/streamer. Which means it never has anything to do with the RØDE (or ATEM), so the original question doesn't make sense.
Thank you for your response! I’m surprised you weren’t aware of this, but it’s also a streaming device—and a really good one at that! I use an ATEM Mini Pro ISO and a Rodecaster Pro 2, and this device integrates both. It can stream directly to YouTube and Twitch from the LAN port. On Twitch, we can play background music, and while it plays during the live stream, the VOD (Video on Demand) doesn’t have the music recorded (we choose not to upload the music to avoid copyright claims). It’s very useful for streamers. And yes, the new Rodecaster is indeed a streaming device, not just a switcher. Even the ATEM Mini Pro ISO can stream and record. I recommend you look into this—it may surprise you! 😀 God bless your day!
I don't understand the question. This doesn't upload, it streams. I'm not a twitch user so I don't know what the VOD setup is, but if it's where you upload a video to playback later (like youtube) then you can upload from your computer. Not this, as it's a streaming device, not an uploader. If that doesn't answer your question, please clarify what you're asking.
Can the overlays fade in and out?
@@photojoseph Thanks for your response!
You know what… I’m not sure. If you have a transition enabled for input changes that probably applies to graphics too but I’m really not sure!
Thanks for the review
@@BlueDiamond-s8u yes, RØDE sent this to me to review. That’s how this works. If you feel that being given a product to review constitutes “payment” then you are sorely mistaken. I can’t pay my rent, my bills, my salary, nor buy food with free product. So no, having one more switcher on my shelf of a dozen video switchers is not “being paid by RØDE”. This is my job. Getting product for “payment” is what you get when you’re a new YouTuber with a day job and you’re thrilled that a company recognizes you. That’s not me, nor anyone else who had the RØDE to review before it was released. Very last one of us does this for a living. I hope that helps to explain the situation.
Thanks for the review
You are assuming very incorrectly. And i did talk pricing, so clearly you didn’t watch to the end. My favorite comments… full of incorrect assumptions and accusations! Yay, you!
Fantastic overview!. Would be nice to see how this could be use pair together with a Rodecaster Duo for PC or Console game streaming!.
I had a YoloBox Ultra for a short time. Found it to be an absolute letdown. Wish there was something as powerful and user friendly as this or the ATEM series but with a decent sized battery to get that easy mobility. Yolobox really got me excited for truely mobile production for streams, but i got my money back as soon as i could. Found it to be underpowered and not very user friendly, some weird interface choices etc.
@@photojoseph dealbreaker was not having media controls! Great videos jo
It’s a unique product for sure. Sorry to hear it didn’t meet expectations.
Great presentation! Im sure the 2nd version will be better, this seems to be more of hybrid of a video switcher and mixer or a high power stream deck.
But a stream deck is just a remote control. Not a switcher.
I want you to show us how the intelligent switcher works with no operator.
Yep, I am planning a video on that.
What a nice review! Thank you very much! Could you compare Rode videocaster with Roland VHD1+?
Someone else will need to do that — I don’t have one, sorry.
love your color hdmi :)
where did you buy them? thnks
They're from RØDE direct. Here you go: https://geni.us/4JP0L
Features look good, but numbers are bad for me. 1080 in 2024 for $1200, this thing is already old.
Who streams in 4K? Almost no one. Outside of the YOLO Ultra (which I’ve not tested in 4K), a true 4K streaming solution is easily a $10,000 investment. It’s far far more involved than most people realize.
If I have 2 sets of rode go 2 mics (so 2 receivers and 4 mics) can they all connect to this via the wireless mic options or is it limited to 2?
It’s limited to two. It’s probably a dual receiver just like is in the wireless pro receivers, capable of connecting to two mics.
Atomos has a great display that does switching and ISO recording
Yes it does. That is, however, all that it does.
Knowing Rode products they lack listening to feedback and implementing much needed features. I don't expect supporting transparent videos, XML, and multi stream.

The Yololiv and ATEM are winners depending on the outcomes.
@@photojoseph I have their RodeCaster Pro V1. Rode just let that fall by the wayside. I had hopes they would continue support the product software.

Which led me to think if I get the RodeCaster Video and connect to usb-c for audio. I'd have 8 audio channels. Just a thought 🤔
Interesting. They’ve been extremely receptive to feedback during the testing period.
ATEM Mini Pro ISO / Extreme ISO is still a winner
Depends on your use case, really… but yes the ATEM is still extremely good.
What's Companion?
It's a portable OBS Studio workflow 😂
@@photojoseph interesting. What I like about the RoderCaster Video is the PiP templates.

I'm looking at the AtomosX Cast which lacks ISO. ISO is a must for me.

Aside from that ...
I got the Shogun Ultra and love the Atomos Cloud options to Frame IO. Atomos Cloud seems to have multistream
Hardly
Joseph, have you tried to do replay shots from the recorded files?
It's something that the software programs are able to do.
No, there’s no way to access the recorded files without connecting the drive to a computer. That would be a cool feature though for sure.
YoloBox Ultra is my champion on the battlefield! Please make a deep dive video and let more people know its power!
I had a terrible experience with the Ultra when i had it, it was so bad i ended up returning it. I found the system underpowered and not very user friendly, also my streams suffered from audio sync issues. I've had years of experience with all sort of different streaming methods, I cannot for the life of me understand why the yolobox gets so much praise!
Can we bringing live Video from one of the USB C Ports? Eg connect IPHONE via USB-C or video from a computer?
As you saw with the WebCam tests, some things work and some things do not. I haven’t tested either of those so I would say without further testing, I don’t know.
I like the idea of the RCV. It looks amazing and seems like it can do 9 simultaneous video on screen according to documentation? But no video transparency, scripting and just a single active overlay are deal breakers for me.
Literally the best review of this product out there. Thank you
Wow, thank you!
I wonder if it has glitches or video dropouts like the Yolobox ultra?I really like the ultra but just like the YBP it can’t be relied on for corporate events.Ive had glitches and drop outs at a few different events.I may just have to try this to test the reliability!
Yeah that’s definitely something that can only be tested in long run situations!
Rode are very lucky to have fantastic third party presenters like you to help them sell this excellent looking product. It’s getting hate for the 1080p but I have cameras like the FX6 and Fx30 that I’m sure will still look good enough with studio lighting etc
I’m not a Sony user, but this has nothing to do with live stream settings. Many cameras (like my LUMIX cameras) can record 4K internally while outputting either 4K or HD over the HDMI. Some of the lower end models can’t output HDMI while recording, but most of them do.
Having not live-streamed before are you saying that I can use the Rodecaster Video for that and record 4K footage at the same time internally to the Sony camera cards? I did not think that was possible as they would be configured in the livestream setting?
@@smallbizdigitalmedia sure but you don’t need a 4K streamer for that. Record internally in 4K and stream in HD. You can do that with ANY streaming hardware and a decent camera today. And have been able to for years.
I think also they want it to both livestream where they take the 1080 hit AND simultaneously record 4K 10 bit video files like I’m currently doing to cards. I’m being realistic and solely seeing this as an epic livestream tool
I appreciate that. I’m actually really surprised at the disdain for 1080p. Literally, I myself am the only person I know crazy enough to stream in 4K. It’s a pain in the ass for so many reasons. Yet, people are whining about it. I think they’ve never done it and haven’t got a clue what it takes.
No question the RCVideo has the best Audio. But it video is lacking. My RCP2 for Audio + my YoloBox Ultra is a 'much' better total package (yes it more $$$) but I had (like a lot of people) already have a RCP2 buying this thing is basically buying another RCP2. Not something I would recommend except to a few people
Totally fair! That’s the challenge being late to the game.
Pretty awesome device! Great video on it as well!
Thanks! 👍
Thanks. A very comprehensive overview.
Glad it was helpful!
Great review. The xlr audio inputs alone make this system extremely attractive, along with the headphone jacks and aux audio outputs, Looks like a very well-thought-out product.
I concur!
Ill stick to my Atem Extreme ISO.
I really appreciate that, thank you!
@@photojoseph your video quality is amazing! Keep up the good work my guy!
Fair enough!
Shockingly expensive!
it really isn't… for what it is, I disagree. It's right in line with the competition.
A shockingly good product showcase. The best overview bar none. I would like a deep dive comparison of the chroma keyer vs the ATEM Mini Extreme and also comparisons of Rode Multisource vs Supersource. Just fyi, as much as I want to buy this product, no Companion integration is a showstopper for me since Companion allows me to put the switcher and cables away from me and also doesn't require using different control apps from different vendors in a mixed environment (outside of initial configs).
Thank you! Noted that you’d like to see a green screen comparison. I 100% understand the Companion limitation and hopefully them being “very familiar” with it means we’ll have something soon!
Great job PJ.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 There is definitely a use for this product. I'd like to see a head to head match up with the ATEM Mini ISO Pro Extreme. I think the versatility if the ATEM's super source is a plus, but the simplicity of the Rode scene function may carry it through. Let us see! 👍🏾
Coming soon! It’s a top request so thank you for adding your voice!
Great device, but with no NDI or SRT, I can't leave the PC out of the chain. If I can't pull the PC, then I may as well build the scenes there because it's far more flexible. Chicken - Egg.
Makes sense!
Crazy 1200 bucks for pos 1080p
Uh, OK. Almost no one streams in 4K. It’s a fair price for an excellent product. Hardly a “pos”.
20:30 good stuff.. a technical break down on video transperancy..
Important stuff!
why are the camera views in multiview so low framerate?
Check my new video — the q&a one. I measure the RØDE delay. No idea what the ATEM one is; I’ve never measured it. But if you know, you can compare!
@@photojoseph I think that's the core difference between Rode and blackmagic. BMD is a professional video device company, they know this is kind of reduced framerate preview is not really acceptable. I bet if you measure the delay from input to output, it will also be more than ATEM. Bet I agree Rode have a very good PM.
I don’t have an answer to “why”. It is noticeable, although I would point out that since this product is really designed for the solo creator and not a big production studio needing frame-accurate cuts, then it probably really doesn’t matter. But yes, it stutters.
Much thanks for this video! It looks promising!
It really does!
Incredible coverage of the RODECaster Video, Joseph!
@@curtisjuddHmm 🤔 yeah, that is quite the downside considering its price tag
@@RedFrameTech I keep going back and forth on whether to buy one...haven't decided yet. But the big blocker for me is the 4 HDMI inputs. My live shows usually use 6 HDMI inputs. The RODE can eliminate one of those, but I'd have to find away around that 5th HDMI source...
@curtisjudd Are you going to have a video on it as well?
Thank you my friend!
