In the import dialogue box I have a a place to add keywords for the photos I am importing. I would like to drag keywords from the keywords HUD, but this does not work. So, I have to manually type in each keyword separately. Time consuming and error prone. Am I missing something?

No, not missing anything. The keyword support on import isn’t great. To be honest, keyword support system wide is pretty lacking.
