Problem importing library #1

Whilst away from home recently I was loading my shots into a project in Aperture (V3.3.1) on my MacBook. Once back at home I wanted to transfer these to my iMac running Aperture 3.4.3. This seemed easy but it didn't work. On the MacBook I right clicked the project and chose “Export Project as new library…”. Copied the new library to the iMac and switched to it to convert it to V3.4.3 format, no problem and library displayed all the photos. Then I switched back to the original library on the iMac and chose Import Library from the File menu and selected the library to import. Contrary to the Aperture Help instructions on this there were no options to select “Merge”, “New”, etc. Aperture displayed a message that it was merging the library for a while and then - nothing, the new photos and the new project didn't appear. It looks as though my Aperture library is a bit bigger for the exercise but that's all.
I've tried all the various Aperture Library repair options but nothing helps. Can you? If not then I'm just going to have to reimport al the basic images on the iMac and re-apply all the corrections I made from scratch.

Hi John

You’ve done all the right things. It will only say ‘merge’ or ‘add’ if it finds duplicates between the two libraries - for example if you’ve exported some projects and are bringing them back edited.

Two possibilities for the missing projects:
1) Aperture adds them at the bottom of the project tree - are they just off the screen?
2) Have you got any filters set on what’s displayed?

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply, at least it sounds like what I tried was correct. I’ve just tried importing again, after reverting the Aperture library to the pre-import state from a Time Machine backup. There are no filters on and I certainly couldn’t find the imported project anywhere. I also tried selecting the “Last 12 months” display option, which ought to include the new images, which were all less than a week old, but they weren’t shown. I guess I’ll just have to add the base images again, fortunately there’s only around 100 of them and re-do then adjustments, which I can do by sitting with the laptop at my side and going through the photos one by one.

Again, thanks for your help.

I’ve got the exact same problem as described by Chris above. This process always worked prior to upgrading to 3.4.3. Although, I can recall which version I was upgrading from.

Unfortunately I don’t have anything more to add to get closer to a solution.

EDIT: I just found a workaround on the Apple forum which did the trick for me:

(Add a duplicate to force the merge or add dialog and then choose add)

I have just had a similar problem. I use my laptop to import at events into a dedicated Events library. Each new event is a separate project and I export this new project as a library for importing onto my Mac Mini.

My workflow is:

1) Right click on new project from laptop and export as Library
- Copy originals and previews is NOT selected
2) Copy this new library to the Mini
3) On the Mini I choose “Import Library”
- If the Project / Library name is unique then there are no merge options

The reason I choose not to copy originals is because that only pertains to referenced images. That is a very confusing option though, and I recently copied 200gb of referenced “Masters” into a managed library - DOH!

So the above normally works without a hitch, but today it is not!

I export the library perfectly fine, copy to the Mini and Import Library. It goes through the motions and shows me an import status bar, but once that finishes one of two things happens:

A) The new project just does not appear
B) The new project appears but has zero images

After inspecting the exported library I can see that all the originals are there, so it should be working.

I tried repairing library permissions, repairing the database and rebuilding the database of the Mac Mini Events Library…. nothing.

I tried deleting the prefs file… nothing.

Tried importing a project from a different library on the laptop… this works! Therefore the problem must lie with my Events library on the laptop.

Now I have tried repairing library permissions, repairing the database and rebuilding the database of the laptop’s Events Library….. nothing.

At the moment I’m at a complete loss.

I have compared the contents of a library which imports and one which doesn’t and everything seems to be there.

I am running Aperture 3.4.3 on both machines.

Any thoughts?
