Lots of Beach Balls Lately #1

Hi guys, new here so be gentle. I've been using Aperture since day one and love it, but lately I'm getting a hell of a lot of beach balls and freezing etc.

I start up and everything is fine, I click from library to adjustments and bang a beach ball which lasts a minute or two. Sometimes It goes no further and simply closes.

Anyone else getting the same?

Pix in Pix,

We’re always gentle :)

Tell us a bit more about what you’ve done so far to try to fix. Have you rebuilt the library or done a permissions fix? Tried to reproduce using a new library? How big is your library? You have a kick-ass Mac so it’s definitely not a hardware issue. What kind of drive are your images stored on, or is it all internal?

let’s start with that

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have fixed permissions recently but haven’t rebuilt my Aperture library since installing V3. Will do that and see if there is an improvement.

My library sits on an internal 500Gb drive which it gets to itself, not sharing with OS or anything. The library is currently approx 235Gb.

Ok so I rebuilt the library and 3 portrait shoots disappeared and 2 entire weddings! One of which hasn’t even been delivered!!!

So luckily I backed up the vault first so all should be OK, but seriously Aperture is really bad at the moment for me. Bug after bug…

PIx in Pix,

WOW. That’s not good. I’ve never heard of an outright loss after a rebuild. Are you positive they are gone and not just in another location/folder in the Library? Try searching the entire library for the images using a known search term (i.e. a keyword you applied, master image file name, etc.).

Were you working Referenced or Managed? If Referenced, then your master files should certainly still be in the Finder.

Regardless, I’m VERY glad to hear you backed up before running the rebuild. ALWAYS good advice.

Back to the issue at hand… definitely you’re not having a good experience with Aperture right now. Let’s get your shoots back and go from there, I’d like to suggest some other options to “fix” things.

I wonder if the new app “App Tamer” would help?

Yes the images were gone completely after the rebuild. I should have taken a screen shot. It wasn’t even a few here and there it was 2 entire weddings and 3 entire portrait shots (3000-4000 images), but everything else was fine and intact, very odd!

I was working with managed files and I have now restored from the vault and all is as it should be.

Not heard of App Tamer Photobug, but all ears…

Thanks guys.

Photobug,

Why would App Tamer work? My understanding is that it halts background processes—what would that have to do with Pix’s missing images? Sorry, I’m don’t use the software, just did 20 seconds of research to see what it is :)

Guess there’s an argument for working managed, as long as you update your Vault regularly. Me, I like referenced simply because even if my Aperture library when completely bonkers, at least my master files would be safe and in their original condition.

How’s performance going since the rebuild? The beachballs were what you first wrote in about…

I looked at app tamer too, looks good but Aperture is usually running alone when it beachballs/crashes/freezes. Even with Safari, Mail, Photoshop open it’s the same, so I dont see what AT would do in this case.

Well the rebuild didn’t happen, I’ve simply reinstated from the vault and left it at that as I need to edited 2 weddings and an event. Once this is done and backed up I may try again although not that confident in it to be honest.

Performance wise everything is the same, beach balls, freezing etc then other times OK for hours. Not happy but not much I can think of doing at the moment.

Cheers for your replies guys

Pix in Pix,

At least you’re back up and running, and I can certainly appreciate your failing confidence. Once you’re through this, let’s see what we can do to get performance back to normal. Since you’re working with a restored library, now would be a good time to do the library rebuild if you have the time. Naturally, again, being sure that you have an easy backup to jump back to if needed.

Let us know when you’re ready to fix this thing for good, and we’ll go through the paces.
