Moving from iPhoto to Aperture. Trialed it and happy so bought via the MAS using discounted iTunes Gift Cards making it a bargain.
Waited while the import process took place which included 10k+ events.
In the new Aperture Library, I now have about 10 events less than in iPhoto ! Trying to find them is like a needle in a haystack. Is there any reason why events might merge ? Can't really see if photos have gone missing as the number count is way up because of extra versions and so on (I assume)…

Offhand I can’t think of a reason that an event might merge.
Can you sort by name and look at them in groups, try to spot at least one missing one? Any chance you had empty events in iPhoto; I don’t know if they would merge or not. Wait you said 10k+ events… ouch. I’d certainly be happier if it were more events. Hmm
I haven’t done a major iPhoto to Aperture move; only small test libraries.
Hopefully someone else can make a suggestion? I’ll tweet it and see what we can learn.
And yes, higher image count is due to both the original and the adjusted image coming in from iPhoto. A drag, I know.

Thanks for responding. I feel privileged to get a reply from someone I hear on the TWIP podcast !
Anyway, I messed up with the event count - it was 1000+ not 10000 ! - still no easy task.
Although I am still looking into this, I ended up trying typing in event names to see if the count was the same (search on “Beach” for example resulted in 40 for both Aperture and iPhoto). I spent some time on that without success until I typed in a cousins name and had a different count.
Further investigation revealed that one event missing (from 1997) comprised photos from one of my first digital cameras, a Sony Mavica (floppy disk model). It seems that these recorded no EXIF data and were low res (640x480). Aperture seems to have ignored the event for some reason. I exported and imported the images fine. Another event ignored appears to have comprised of MOV files.
As I say, I am still laboriously searching but old unsupported formats may be the underlying cause for the lack of imports ?

VERY interesting on your find however. I’d imagine those Sony Mavica files were JPG, so it shouldn’t be a format issue. Same with the MOV files. Odd.
Now that you know (at least some of) the cause, could you go back into iPhoto and search for all Mavica files, and see what Events those are in, and then look for those Events in Aperture? Basically search the other way around from what you’re doing now?
Also, would you do me a favor… if the photos aren’t too personal, would you mind sharing a small collection of the Mavica and MOV files that did NOT make the transition to Aperture with me? I’d love to have those in my iPhoto library that I’ll use for the training on transitioning to Aperture. This is precisely the sort of information I’m looking for in this post, “What Problems Have You Had Migrating From iPhoto to Aperture?”.
If that’s agreeable to you, please package them up in a zip file and drop them in the Drop Box on this site. That’d be very helpful.
