Custom naming? #1

Hey all
I want to use aperture over lightroom but have a naming issue.
I have to send my files to a few sources, with each having their own way to name.
I've used photo mechanic to auto input into set fields so when I have to upload these photos they rename.
The thing with Aperture is you only get 20 odd fields you that you can use.

Is there a way to add more?

I need to add things like “source” “category” “provider”

Thanks

Steven,

Aha, I see. Interesting workflow, and totally sensible. Sadly, what you’re asking for can’t be done in Aperture. The naming options don’t include any of the IPTC fields.

Here’s an idea; I know this is a crap solution, but better than doing it all by hand. You could make a preset that includes a text block with keywords like RACETRACK and RACENUMBER, then after exporting a batch of the same track and number, use an application like NameChanger to replace those keywords with the names you want in the Finder.

To include fixed text in any naming preset, just type text into the name field in the preset manager [screenshot].

And I’ll put in a feature request for IPTC fields in the naming presets. Sounds perfectly logical to me.

Steven,

I’m not quite sure I follow, sorry. You mention the fields; are you referring to naming or to IPTC metadata fields?

The File Naming dialog has auto-populated fields, and you can type anything manually that you want into the string as well [screenshot]

The Metadata manager has custom fields you can create [screenshot]

Where is it you need to add data?

Sorry Joseph
I use photo mechanic to import my photos. I should also say I shoot horse racing & aussie rules football.

One of the ways I’ve set lightroom up to export and rename my photos is like this:
Creditline_Date (DD)-Date (MM)-Date (YYYY)_WIN_City_Source__Sequence # (001)

I then get a file named like this:
Black Caviar_25-03-2011_WIN_Moonee Valley_Race 7__001.jpg
I’ve set it up so “credit line” is the horses name, the date, “city” is the race track, “source” is the race number.

In Aperture you get only a few fields in which you can use to rename each photo. Now typing in this to every photo would add around 3 hours to my work flow, in Lightroom it takes 10 seconds.

Yes its also used from the IPTC fields, so I guess I’m asking, can you auto rename files from the IPTC fields in Aperture? if so how, if not why?
