automated export only adjusted raw as jpegs on ipad #1

I am a beginner at Aperture but shoot in RAW and JPEG and sped a lot of time adjusting the photos I take. I create a smart album which gathers the adjusted photos (I label them 5 stars after adjustment) and import them as selected albums to my iPad. I have now run out of room as these files are large.
Is there a way I can automate (probably Applescript or Automator) the creation of jpeg versions of these adjusted photos (not the original versions from the camera) and have them in the smart albums and import them only to the iPad.

This would all mw to put all my photos on the iPad.

I hope someone has an idea.

Patrick,

Welcome to Aperture :)

I think your workflow is fine, but we need to figure out where and why you’re running out of space.

Just to be sure you understand what’s happening, regardless of the format of the original file (RAW, JPG, TIF, whatever) when it syncs to your iPad, it’s a JPG that is synced. The original is not. Are you syncing through iTunes? If so, then an optimized version of the file is created for the iPad and moved to it on sync. So you can’t really get any more photos on the iPad than iTunes will put there—you need to sync fewer photos or get a bigger iPad.

If I’m understanding correctly, what you’re asking for is actually what already is happening. You just aren’t aware of it because it’s all invisible.

How many photos have you synced to your iPad, and what size iPad is it? Let’s see if what you’re getting seems reasonable or if something else is amiss.

For example if I look in iTunes with my iPad connected, it shows that I’ve synced 2136 photos, taking up 1.73GB of space.

Thank you Joseph for your reply. From my research it seems that the adjusted photos should be optimised to jpegs.
My iPad is 64gb with only .15gb taken up with photos (224 of them) and 41.8gb free. There should be plenty of room to put all my photos in if I wish. I am doing a regular sync through itunes.

It looks like there may be another problem.

Help!!!

Patrick,

By my math, you should be able to fit roughly 62421 images on the iPad.

0.15 GB ÷ 224 images = .000669643 GB per image
41.8 GB ÷ .000669643 GB per image = 62421

Give or take few hundred, of course

So, what are you trying to sync. Are you asking iTunes to sync your entire Aperture library, or only particular folder(s)? If just particular folders (as it should be), how many images are in those folders (combined)? And finally, what is happening when you try to sync?

I take HDR RAW pics most of the time and then use Photomatix to merge them and adjust them. It is only this final image that I want on my iPad. There are only 545 images that I want to put on my iPad.
It is interesting that if I delete all from iPad with a sync then choose a few albums with these completed images it seems to pick a random number to import. The first time it was 145 the second (with different albums) 65 pics. Neither of these numbers represent the number that should have been synced.

For each import (project) I create a Smart Album which contains a 5 star rating. As I complete each adjustment and am happy with the shot I give it 5 stars. It is these Smart Albums that are not being completely synced.

I recently found this advice on the net:

Found the solution on iLounge (thanx to auzzie23!):

1) close iPhoto (I closed Aperture) and itunes
2) find the iphoto library in finder, (I found the Aperture library on an external drive) most probably located in your users folder under pictures.
3) right click on iPhoto (Aperture) library (might be named diferently) and choose show package contents
4) delete the folder caches and ipod photo cache. I could not find the folder caches but did delete the iPod photo cache folder.
5) restart iphoto (Aperture
6) restart itunes
if itunes asks that the library is linked with another ipod, say yes to the warning to re sync with your ipad/ iphone.

This seemd to be an improvement as now I have 250 pics synced but there are still about 250 that have not synced.

Patrick,

OK now I understand the issue.

There have been many reported problems with what you’re doing unfortunately, and it’s gone quite some time without a fix. It seems that getting iTunes to properly recognize/refresh changes in the albums is a crapshoot. What you’ve done is a good start but likely only temporary — and as you’ve seen, it wasn’t even a complete fix.

I know this isn’t ideal, but you could try moving the images from the Smart Album to a regular Album (at the end of your edit) and seeing if that’s any more reliable.

I personally handle my iDevice syncing differently, and have for a long time, mostly because I use multiple Libraries, but it also meant that the issues you’re having don’t exist for me. Check out this article Current Aperture/iLife Sharing Nightmares, and How to Avoid It Entirely. As you can see that article is about a year old, and these problems are still plaguing people—not as bad as before, but still not perfect.

cheers
