Difficulty Reconnecting Masters #1

So, I leave for college in less than a month, and I figured now would be a good time to do some serious cleaning of my digital life, since I don't plan of have random drives strewn around the dorm room.

Long story short… I've got a few very persnickety files in my Aperture library that don't want to reconnect as Masters.(Most of my library is managed, but I routinely move older images off my disk to save space.)
Here's a screenshot: img.ly/6Orp

Furthermore, I have a group of a few hundred iPhone photos which seem to have gone missing. When I try to use Locate Referenced Files, I get a message saying that they are Missing. The manual indicates that I should be able to use the same window to relocate them, but I'm having no luck.

I'm going to try a few more things and post back.

Michael,

(I saw your tweet and responded there too). If you hold down the Option key, that will usually force a reconnect, as long as the primary properties of the photo (dimension, file size) haven’t changed. If that doesn’t work, let me know.

As for the missing iPhone photos, try searching for them in the Finder with Spotlight.

Thanks! (And for the tweet too1) The option trick worked great! (There really needs to be a list of that stuff in the Aperture manual. Or in the training book. Haha, makes the ACP seem too easy.)

Anyway, the iPhone photos appear to be gone. But I won’t fret too much over 100 photos, and most were reference shots / random things which work perfectly fine as previews, or now new low res masters.

I need to check my strategy for keeping a good iPhone Camera roll. Actually, I think there’s some things I learned about what not to do here because there’s definitely advantages for keeping iPhone photos in Aperture and synced backed to iPhone, but not in it’s camera roll. I just need to do it…right. :)

Michael,

I’ve always struggled with the iPhone photos too. Do I put them in a big “iPhone” project? Do I put the photos from my trip to Hawaii in with the rest of the photos from the trip to Hawaii? But then, where do I put the ones that are just random? And… do I leave them on the iPhone, or clear them when I import?

I would say at this point don’t spend much time developing a strategy, because when iOS 5 is release in the Fall, we’ll have iCloud and the last 1,000 of your iPhone photos will automatically sync to iCloud—and presumably back into Aperture (seems logical).

Then, we’ll need a whole new strategy :)

It’s with the release of iCloud in mind, that I think this will be ever more important for iPhone photographers to regularly offload photos especially if you want to use over the air backup (and that’s more than just photo stream). My Photos portion of my iPhone backups were over 5GB (and I’d already cleaned it a few times), and that data gets backed up with iTunes multiple times and then to iCloud (which exceeds the free storage) and slows things down. The real problem is letting these Camera Roll’s fill up. They actually can make the picture TAKING process quite slow on iOS 4 and earlier, and some in iOS but it’s much better.

iCloud will be very cool for many of us, but trust when I say over the air backup of the camera roll is not something that is. BTW the new camera app should rock, if you catch my drift.

Also, I think I’m finding a decent strategy for keeping photos in sync. I created a smart folder at the root of my library with Camera Model set to iPhone, and titled it iPhone Camera Roll. Then I put specific images in projects for which they belong, and the random snaps of serial numbers (which I have keyworded), screenshots, and others go into it’s own project which is not synced back to my iPhone in iTunes. I’ve done that for a while, and it works well, but my only problem is getting the photos into Aperture. So, what I think I’m going to do is write an Automator script to auto download new images just to my iPhone project. I’ll save the deleting (which needs to be done in Image Capture) for later just for security. Currently, I’m using the Image Capture auto import app every time I plug my phone, and that works OK, but I don’t have it set to auto import to Aperture because I don’t want the hot folder script running 24/7. -I’m a bit of a Nazi towards unnecessary processes on my Mac.

That was a bit disconnected I think, but I am considering iCloud in this scenario. (Though why there is no Aperture 3.2 beta for developers like there is for iPhoto, I have no idea. I’d love to use Photo Stream and Aperture!)
