Problem Updating of Aperture 3 Smart Albums linked to iPad #1

Hi,
I've noticed a strange issue recently. I have several smart albums that are linked to my iPad 2. However, if I subsequently make any adjustments (crop, exposure, etc.) to those photos in Aperture 3 and then re-sink, the photos aren't updated with the new information on the iPad. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks,
Charles

Thanks to both for the tips; they seem to help!

Syncing to iDevices can be erratic. I’m still trying to get mine fully synced after the iOS 5 upgrade - it only seems happy to do about 600 images at a time.

A couple of suggestions. If you have upgraded to the latest version of Aperture have you allowed it enough time to work through and regenerate the thumbs. Maybe that process got interrupted. I found it helped to force them to regenerate - overnight job with 18000 images.

The other thing to do is to go into ‘show package contents’ and cut and paste the folder ‘iPod Photo Cache’ to somewhere safe. Then sync and regenerate the cache.

Finally there are the various rebuild options if all else fails.

Let me know if that’s not clear enough.

cheers

Charles,

The other thing to consider is that the Smart Albums may not be updating Previews. Even though the iPad/iPod sync doesn’t actually use the Previews (it generates its own JPGs at a specific size), I wonder if the image it’s generating is coming from the Previews, and if you’re Previews are out-of-date, then it may not be getting the latest version.

Easiest way to see if the Preview is updated is to drag the image from Aperture to the desktop. What JPG does it drag; the current iteration, or a previous one?

You can manually update Previews from the Photos menu.

If you add new photos to the Smart Album do those sync properly? Are you syncing wirelessly, and if so, have you tried syncing wired? Do you have Aperture set to update the shared previews Always or When Quitting [screenshot]?

There are a lot of things that can get in the way, and this sync has been notoriously problematic. This is why I haven’t relied on it in years, and instead do things this way: Current Aperture/iLife Sharing Nightmares, and How to Avoid It Entirely.
