I need help with something and I'm sure you can gimme a hand. I've used Aperture for almost 2 years now, currently using 3.1.3, library size down from 31gb to 27.7gb thanks to your article on dramatically reducing libre size and deleting some old projects I was never gonna need. Files mostly RAW from my Nikon D3 and D2X and S2Pro.
Dilemma #1:
I made the mistake a while back of making some projects referenced, others managed. I'm looking to go all referenced on my normal HD since I still have 360gb of free space.
How do I convert ONLY those managed to referenced? I'd like to have a fully referenced library, I make adjustments on ALL of my pictures inside Aperture but I already turned off all previews like you suggested.
Dilemma #2:
There has to be some wrong setting and I've looked and pretty pretty much everywhere (except here), but even when I try deleting a referenced file, and then deleting the Aperture trash, I don't get the dialog box asking me to delete the master image. I want to set it up so that if I decide deleting a version/image on Aperture, it automatically goes to the trash, then when I delete the trash that it goes to system trash and then bye-bye, forever!

#1: All you need to do is find all Managed photos at once, and then Relocate Masters. I have a smart album set up in my Library (although I couldn’t tell you now if I made this myself or if it was part of the default install), but either way it’s easy to make. Just select the Projects and Albums in the Library tab [screenshot] and create a new Smart Album. Add the Rule for File Status and set it to Managed. [screenshot]
This will find all Managed photos in the Library. Just select them, and choose menu File > Relocate Master.
however… if you utilize flickr or facebook sharing, you will see those there as well (denoted by a little share icon [screenshot], and you don’t want to move those out (actually I don’t know what will happen if you do, but I think it’d be a bad idea). So add the additional criteria Aperture Metadata : Project Path : does not include : “flickr” and/or one for “facebook”. If you use MobileMe, you’ll need to add it in for that, too. Be sure to scan through the selection to ensure that you’re in fact not finding any more of those shared images. Once you’re confident that you’re only looking at non-shared images, proceed with relocating the masters as above.
#2: I’m not sure why this is happening… you should definitely see the message if you’re in fact deleting Referenced files. Have you checked to see if those files are going to the Finder trash but you’re simply not getting the warning? Or are they in fact being deleted permanently in the Finder as well as in Aperture once you empty the trash?
If it’s the later, we’ll have to do some more digging. If it’s the former, perhaps the warning dialog was reset. Go to the Preferences and in the General tab click “Reset All Warnings”. [screenshot]

Problem is I have all my files in folders under different names/categories etc. and by using the Smart Album it’ll just take them all and throw em in 1 place, and I have like 65 projects.
Does this mean I have to do it project by project? Or is there an automated way where Aperture will just take the managed file’s location on the hard drive and replace it with the referenced file?
Still working on dilemma #2.
So I sat down with all projects and manually deleted all raw files then relocated, took me about 50 minutes for all 65 projects. Helped me rename many folders and delete pictures that weren’t either referenced or managed, just sitting there.
APERTURE LIBRARY DOWN 27.81GB –> 2.22 GB:::: 8% of its original size.

Dilemma #2 Solved:
If I tried deleting both referenced and managed at the same time, I didn’t get the warning. Now trying to delete only referenced, the warning pops up!

Oh how interesting. So would you mind testing this for me… if you delete a Managed and a Referenced image at the same time, as you did, and you don’t get the warning, as you said, does the Referenced file still get moved to the Finder trash?
