Wanting and needing to reduce my Library size. All images are stored off line on a drobo. Has any one tried the following to remove thumbnails of deleted files?

find ~/ -name “AP.Thumbnails” -delete ;find ~/ -name “AP.Minis” -delete ;find ~/ -name “AP.Tinies” -delete

Thanks for the feed back. David

David,

(ah, you already posted it here… thanks)

I’m not a unix jockey so I can’t comment on the method of locating and removing files. However I will tell you what will happen if you do.

All .Thumbnails, .Minis and .Tinies are required for Aperture to display the image on screen. If you delete them, Aperture should just rebuild them, but this will take time and you’ll be waiting while it does. And in general, it’s not a good idea to go deleting things in the Aperture Library package, although I’ve done it myself. Shh, don’t tell anyone.

Previews however are not required, and can be deleted. But you don’t have to go into the package to do it. I recommend you read these two posts to full understand thumbnails and previews in Aperture:

A Comprehensive Look at Thumbnails, Previews, and More in Aperture 3

Reducing Library Size—Dramatically

Thanks Joseph. I read somewhere that when you delete images from aperture that the thumbnails and previews are not dumped. Is that correct? Seems like leaving those would be a wast of space. I re-read the articles, thanks. David

David,

Ah, interesting. That I don’t know… I’ve never hear either way. Do you recall where you read this?

It’s not too tough to sort out these sorts of issues. Simply create a trash library with three or for projects that use duplicate masters or masters that have no value and try it: create previews, delete versions, look in the library to observe the status of the previews and thumbnails. I do a lot of this sleuthing because the different Nik plug-ins deal with tiffs in different ways —- and you want to keep track of your tiffs — lest you be off to Best Buy for a few for terabytes.

I will test this thanks tom and Joseph. After you do a rebuild on the db there seems to be a folder of recovered images. I don’t remember if those were the ones in Apertures trash or ones that I cleared out of apertures trash (really deleting them) maybe those are the tunis finally be expelled from the db. happy new year david

David,

I’ve been hearing about these “recovered images” showing up after rebuilds/repairs lately, although I’ve never seen it myself. They aren’t images from the trash (at least they shouldn’t be). I’d guess they are images that somehow got “lost” in a crash or other error, and on the database scan/repair, were discovered and placed for you to find.
