Is it possible to retrieve the preview JPGs of deleted masters? #1

I have deleted from the Aperture trash and the system trash the master files (and their backups!) of some very important images. Frustratingly, the preview files still show and look great but can't apparently be retrieved. Does anyone know how this can be done?

Nick,

D’oh! No cloud backup with history you can go back to?

If you have actual preview files, you’re still in good shape. You know that you do if you can drag the image to the desktop, which will drag out the actual JPG preview file. The size and quality of that will depend on what you have set in your Aperture preferences, but by default if memory serves it’s a good quality 1/2-size JPG.

If it doesn’t drag out, then that means you only have the thumbnails. Fortunately Aperture makes a large, 1024 thumbnail, but the only way to retrieve that is to take a screenshot of it. Make your Viewer as big as it can be, and tap the z key (zoom to 100%). The image may actually go smaller when you do this, because you’d only be looking at the 1024 thumbnail. Screenshot that, and that’s all you’ll have.

All that said, I’m a little confused as to how you could have anything in Aperture at all if you already moved images to the trash in Aperture and emptied the Aperture trash?
