Looking for a replacement for web galleries ,since loosing mobile.me.
Would like something that can be password protected to preview projects with clients.
I used this function in Aperture all th time.

I’ve been clawing my way through iPad/iPhoto Journals.
This solution has some short term promise.
To bad for the people with no iPad. It doesn’t seem to exist in the iPhoto for Mac. Running version 9.2.3
I certainly hope that it gets cleaned up and implemented in Aperture 4 (when ever that might be).
I find that the editing and layout workflow is cumbersome and has some arbitrary sizing constraints but it seems to work pretty well after it grinds it’s way through the cloud process twice.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that a juiced up version will appear in the new Aperture.
Thanks for the tutorial in AE tips.

Check out the folks at www.jalbum.net. They offer free and pro accounts, online storage, and tons of up-to-date skins. The program works very easily and has lots of flexibility. Publish to their site, your own site, or various public sites. Best of all, you can try it, fully functional, for free. They have been going for several years, and the upgrades and tweaks keep coming. Link to my Galleries

Bill,

I use JAlbum for my main website, but it can in no way be compared to the simplicity of making a MobileMe gallery in Aperture.

I too have been wondering how to replace MobileMe galleries soon. I purchased iPhoto for iPad recently and was trying out the new journal feature. It is very cool. You can make simple journals that would be similar to MobileMe galleries. But journal can do much more than that. You can publish journals to iCloud. You can share links to these journals with others to view in their web browser - similar to MobileMe galleries.

Since there seems to be much speculation that a new version of Aperture is coming, I am counting on the new version of Aperture having journals too. I seem to remember iPhoto getting Faces and Locations first and Aperture getting them a few months later.
That ‘s my plan for now.

There will be a small post on Journals on Sunday, if you’re not familiar with them already. Very cool, BUT no password protection. However the links are totally obscure so no one can find them without the actual URL.

I would recommend flickr, at this point. Yes something better might come in the next Aperture, but flickr gives you protected galleries and you can sync directly from Aperture. It’s not as pretty as MobileMe was, but I actually had heard they were completely redoing their interface. Not sure when, but apparently that’s coming.

Joseph,

I don’t think flickr is acceptable for pros. It is for some, but not for many. Galleries were polished and almost brainless out of Aperture. Password protected and lots more.

Also… the Gallery app on the iPhone/iPad was/is simply the absolute best way to show photos/images to anyone (other than giant/not giant prints … platinum being the ones that take breath away).

gfsymon & John,

You’re right, flickr isn’t pro… and I’m sorry John, I missed the part of your message where you said “for clients”.

In that case, check out Smugmug. There’s a great Aperture plugin too, SmugInProForAperture.

What’s the “Gallery” app you mentioned? Can you link us to it? Searching “Gallery” gives too many options… unless you just meant the MobileMe Gallery app?

And there is Smugmug.com. They have lots of features for pros and can also host video (20 minutes or less) if you get the right account level. The free Aperture plugin works OK but I prefer the Pro version (around $20).

The main issue I have with Smugmug is I don’t like how it works on the iPad. When you want to open an image to fill the screen (without going into slideshow mode), you can’t just flip images with your finger to go to next or previous. You have to hit a tiny arrow button with your finger.

I appreciate the replies.
These solutions are unfortunately barbaric replacements for the elegant Apple tools we have come to love.
I hope the journals will appear at some point in Aperture 4 ( a myth at this point).Exporting from Aperture to iPhoto for a solution makes me shake my head in disappointment.

Yes, sorry for being a bit vague. The Apple MobileMe Gallery app. It is actually just called ‘Gallery’. If you have never looked at it and have a MobileMe membership, make a MobileMe gallery in Aperture (keeping verticals and horizontals grouped is good) and take a look at your gallery in the Gallery app. You will see how a website for images should be done on the iPhone/iPad. I haven’t seen anything else as good and certainly nothing as simple. Unfortunately using Safari on the iPhone/iPad spoils the experience with lost real-estate.

You and I are on the same page on this.

I too am waiting for Journals, but I’m not expecting it to be the same deal. So, for the time being, I’ve made a step backwards in some ways and a step forwards in others. I’m currently using the built-in ‘Web Pages’ to make websites. They are pretty nice sites and are as easy to make as MM galleries and you can obviously keep tabs on them in Aperture itself.

Disadvantages :
Don’t allow for download of full-sized images or other sizes.
No password built-in
Can’t be viewed via the Gallery app
Don’t have all the different views and polish of the MM galleries
You have to output to your Mac, then upload via ftp (PITA)

Advantages:
Much wider availability of metadata
Can go up to 1200x1200 px
Can choose your Export Presets as you want them (so use anything you want)
Can include watermark
Once Exported, can use a web creation tool to add tracking code (I use iWeb SEO tool which is free for this use)
If you know how, you can make your own web template.
Can be hosted on your own domain :
-so you keep your ‘branding’
-Can use advanced web hosting features, like serious passwords and so on through Linux htaccess etc.
-Simple re-directs if you want etc.

Overall it’s a pain compared to the simplicity of the MM galleries, but there are some positives.

(Sorry - this is biased post as I work as DPHOTO, but we have had lots of MobileMe users move across recently)

John, take a look at www.dphoto.com. It has a very similar feature set to the MobileMe Gallery, and is completely ad and branding free. It has password protected albums, private albums, download controls and lots of customisation.

The main site is built in Flash, but the galleries have dedicated iPad and iPhone versions (including the native style sliding photos that Thomas misses in the Smugmug gallery)

There are also an Aperture (and iPhoto) plugin, so you can prepare a gallery without ever leaving Aperture. You can see more information on those plugins here http://www.dphoto.com/news/

Henry,

Please contact me offline. I’d like to write this up on the main page.
