Full screen mode: lost film strip and tool bar AND 2nd monitor usefulness #1

I just installed Lion and now in Aperture full screen (the F command) I can no longer scroll to the top of the screen to get the tool bar nor can I scroll to the left side to get the film strip. I can't seem to find a setting to get them back. Are they gone with Lion?

Additionally, I used to be able, in Aperture full screen, to put other programs (e.g, Pandora or Preview with a .pdf of Aperture shortcuts, etc.) on my second monitor. Now, with Lion, it seems that only Aperture windows can be open in full screen mode. Am i missing something?

Stanford,

The toolbar and the filmstrip are both still there. It could be that they are on the other screen though, since you have two? If not, maybe trash your preferences to see if that gets them back.

You’re right about the full screen taking over everything though; you can’t have the second screen be not Aperture. You can still make it an alternate viewer though; [screenshot].

Joseph,
Thanks for your quick reply.

I trashed the preferences. Then opened up Aperture and went full screen. The tool bar did show up momentarily, but faded out and would not return when I took the cursor to the top of the screen. The film strip never showed up (on either screen). I’ve tried the preferences trash approach several times with the same result.

UPDATE: I restarted (not sure this did anything, though). Same problem, BUT with a twist (that maybe I hadn’t noticed before): the tool bar and slideshow were showing up, but they were in another desktop space. WTF?! So I closed down two of the four desktops that were showing up but kept the main desktop and the Aperture desktop and now things seem to be ok.

I’m not sure Apple’s got a handle on this whole full-screen / desktop thang yet….

Thanks again for your help.

Sanford,

hold up… you have FOUR screens?! I wonder if anyone at Apple has even tested that before. It’s not exactly… normal ;-)

So with two displays it’s working fine, right?

No, no, not four SCREENS. There were four DESKTOPS (formerly known as Spaces). Apparently two were empty, whatever that means, and Aperture was using one of them for the drop down control bar and the film strip. But at times it was even weirder than that: the menu bar at the top and the launch bar at the bottom were showing up on the Aperture desktop when Aperture was in full screen mode.

My Mac Pro is late 2006. This model will not be supported by the next version of OS X Lion as I understand things. So maybe that has something to do with my issues. That is, maybe Lion just barely works on this machine as is…

Aha, thanks for clarifying.

Interesting, I only use desktops and full screen apps on my small screen (MacBook Air) and on the big iMac with dual displays, never do. Guess that’s why I hadn’t run into it.
