what would be your suggestion(s) for cloud storage/backup. I have a lot of photos and I am wondering if clouding them would be efficient speed and cost wise. Any suggestion?

Pierre,

I’m a big fan of Backblaze and currently have several TB of storage on their backup system.

If you have a large library and large files in it, Cloud is more or less worthless unless you are fortunate enough to be living somewhere with really fast internet.

My best is around 3Mbps and so on line back up is a no go for me, unfortunately.

You’d be surprised at how quick Backblaze actually is. They do some crazy compression that will upload a lot of data very very fast. Read the post we wrote not too long ago “Ten Tips to a Clean Aperture Library (9 of 10) — Verify Your Backups”.

Another Backblaze fan here. Ever since they did the last software upgrade, I find the speed of the backups is really very fast. (Helps that I do have a fast internet connection of course). It’s a very simple solution and very convenient.

Another great feature of Backblaze is they support backup of external hard drives at no additional charge. Last time I checked, the other online backup choices charged extra for external HD backup.

One caveat is you cannot disconnect your external drive for more than 30 days or its backup will be deleted. (but if you’re doing that your external drive probably is a backup itself)

Another thing to note is that if you live somewhere without ‘unlimited’ data plans you may well exhaust your limit fast this way.

Here in NZ pretty much every plan is capped and you would be paying at least USD50 a month for around 40Gb at 3Mbps. The 40Gb would include data up and down.

Marcus,

40GB cap?!?! Are you certain? That’s insanely low. If you streamed 10 HD movies a month that’d pretty much kill your cap. Are you sure it’s not 400GB? I’ve heard of 250GB, and mine is 500GB but they are very lenient about it.

I agree that you should have multiple backups of your files, but why do you need your backup backed up? If your local drive and backup are lost at the same time an online company has a loss, you might as well hang it up.
