Hi everyone
Hope you can help with this issue. I am shooting RAW & Jpeg in my Sony RX100 at a 1:1 aspect ratio. The photos are 'square' on the camera screen - so I compose the photo as a square format.
However, when I import into Aperture, they appear slightly distorted while 'processing..' but then appear in 3:2 format once imported - including the extra detail to make a proper 3:2 photo.
How can I import in the 1:1 shooting aspect ratio? This would save me having to crop all my images to 1:1.
Thanks
Paul

Square Aspect Ratio in camera not square in Aperture

I’m not familiar with the camera in question, but quite often these types of in-camera settings are not directly transferable to third party RAW processors … because the software can’t recognize or act upon those embedded hooks that the camera maker’s software can act upon.
From what you are sharing, it doesn’t appear that the camera is actually cropping the RAW image whatsoever … merely masking off the area that you wish not to see in the finished product. This is much in the same way when choosing to shoot black and white in the camera … only the maker’s software will actually recognize the embedded file instructions and render accordingly … thus these B&W images, when rendered in third party software, will show as full color as if you never set the camera to capture in B&W mode.
Of course, any resulting in-camera jpegs will render your actual in-camera settings, but the RAW files will not appear so in other software due to the proprietary manner in which they are achieved, it could be very difficult, and in many cases illegal for third party developers to directly emulate them.
Paul,
Butch is right — so the only solution is to shoot RAW+JPEG. That way you get the original color full-aspect RAW, as well as the cropped/colored JPEG.

Cheers Butch and Joseph,
Spot on - had a look at the jpegs and they were cropped. I understand what is happening now and it makes sense really.
Thanks for your help guys.
