My iPhoto '11 9.4.2 is a mess:
- Not saving to Library
- Crashing when I click info “i” for details of camera settings for individual photos
- Think I am importing a few photos to Library and tries to save all so have most events in triplicate now with 30,000 photos in all

Thanks
“Damaged/unreadable thumbnails” after attempt at Rebuild Thumbnails and Repair Database
In Finder:Pictures
Thumbnails appear in Recovered Photos_2 (don’t know what happened to 1) and in PhotoExport
No thumbnails in iPhotoLibrary or New Library.photolibrary
Events and Photos showing in New Library, with duplicates /triplicates but no saved Albums of course
Should I try Rebuild Database? or work with New Library as default?

Jane

Loss of thumbnails is neither here nor there. Once the library is wholesome they can be rebuilt.

I’m beginning to wonder if you have a problem with your hard disk, suggest using disk utility or diagnostics to see if there’s a problem.

So long as you have plenty of space and have backed up then see if a rebuild will fix it. If it doesn’t you’ve lost nothing.

Hi Jane

I’m afraid you’re going to have to find someone a lot more familiar with iPhoto than me. I can’t quite see how it might show photos but not events.

Sorry about that.

Hi David
Disk Ultility check says - Volume MAC HD appears to be OK. Have Rebuilt iphoto but still very unstable. Had to do it a second time to restore events and now it doesn’t want to display events at all but can still see photos. Reckon if I switch libraries that I will have to repeat. Why would one library be fine and not the original? Will probably have to trek over to Apple shop once my broken ankle is healed.

Almost certainly not, both use the same file format. You’ll need to try the various options to repair the library. You access these by holding Ctrl-Option down when opening iPhoto.

Thanks. I have saved my photos to a new library. Advantage is that it hasn’t crashed.
But
1 How do I delete the 20,000 duplicates?
2 How would I transfer my albums across?

I take it none of the repair options worked. If you haven’t tried them suggest you do. That will stabilize your library and then let you attack the duplicates.

In Aperture you have the option of exporting a library along with all the albums and so forth and re-importing it - which has been known to fix library problems. You don’t seem to have that option in iPhoto.

For duplicate removal suggest you Google it and weigh up the pros and cons. There is a program called Duplicate Annihilator that claims to do the job for USD8. Be aware that you may not have true duplicates - you may have imported thumbnails and previews somehow, so you need to be sure that the ones you delete are not the masters. The program I’ve mentioned claims to do that.

As for carrying albums over you will either need to do one or all of the repairs and retain your original library then get rid of duplicates unless anybody knows better.

Hi David I don’t get any meaningful options when I open iphoto - just whether I want to remove from the dock etc.
The good news is that it now is saving to Library and has got rid of the duplicates. Not sure what I did, although I changed some preferences in relation to iCloud??
The remaining problem is that still crashes if I click ‘info’ and also Faces - and what I did have in Faces is no longer there.

Hi Jane
The repair options are accessed by holding Cmd Option and then clicking on iPhoto to open it. You should get four options which you can try in increasing order of severity.
