Referenced Files management #1

I imported my photos from the SD card through aperture and saved as reference files on an external HDD. How do I update those reference files (in the external HDD) after making adjustments in Aperture?

Is it also recommended saving reference files in two separate external HDD to be safe? Is there an easy method to update those reference files after making adjustments?

Akshay,

I think you may be misunderstanding the way Aperture works. There is no “updating of the Original”, especially if those are RAW files. You can export versions that have your adjustments “baked” into them, to send by email, print, post on websites, whatever, but the original is always untouched.

You can however embed Metadata in the original by using the command Metadata > Write IPTC Metadata to Original if you want.

As far as backups, having a backup of your Originals is not only recommended but critical, and again those will not have the adjustments. The adjustment instructions are stored within Aperture and applied in realtime as you view the images in the Library.

Thanks Joseph for explaining that. Do you have a good reference on how to best organize your aperture library and how to save heavy RAW files as reference files in the external HDD in your book? I was looking to buy that ebook. Please advise. I have so many files and am not able to efficiently organize and store them let alone backing them up and am spending too much time keeping them in order rather than shooting. Thanks

Akshay,

Yep, the eBook “ApertureExpert’s 15 Tips on File Management in Aperture 3” is probably your best bet. You can also watch the Live Training videos for tips.
