Trouble with Joseph's Magic Trick! Import into new, empty library. #1

OK, so I've been dealing with multiple issues since upgrade to 3.3.2, mostly related to old iPhoto smart albums that somehow messed up with the new sort by date functionality.

Anyway, I solved that, but now I am even more confused!

Import of my OLD Aperture library into a NEW empty library finally worked without crashing! This after deleting all smart albums that were previously created in iPhoto.

However, the new Aperture library after import is only showing 7 Albums. While my primary OLD Aperture library has at least another 25 albums in it (smart albums, books, regular albums).

Upon closer inspection, I notice that all of these MISSING albums were under a folder called Library Albums.

Does that make any difference? Why would Aperture have completed import into new library without any errors but not made a complete match?

Again, all photos appear to be in library. But albums are missing.

Any way to check and compare OLD library with NEW library other than just a spot check as I've done in inspector?

Also, OLD library 76.38 GB on disk.
NEW library just 58.22 GB on disk?!

Thanks for help experts!

John,

No way to compare, no.

I guess that “Library Albums” folder was causing a problem, interesting. Can you open the original Library, move everything out of that folder (or just rename it), and try again? If that proves to be the issue, I’ll update the FAQ.

thanks

Joseph,

Thanks for the reply. I’m trying this now.

Do I need to take the time to create an entirely new library and wait all over again?

Or OK to import in and merge???

I’d start from scratch, since that’s the point of the fix. Set it to go overnight if you can.

Joseph,

Started the merge before I saw your reply. It worked! Almost!

Here is what I did. I created a new folder, and moved the smart albums from within Library Albums into the new folder.

This time it synced that new folder, and ALMOST ALL the sub-folders. It missed one!

I’ll try the new library overnight tonight.

Think I should rebuild the primary library first? I’ve already done the first two first aid options on it.

Thanks for all the help!

John,

Can’t hurt, since it did miss one.

OK Joseph. Tried the import in to new library trick again, starting from scratch. Aperture completed, but still missing some albums!

Not sure how to share screen shots with you in the forum, so will just explain.

New library on SSD is 25,897 photos and takes 59.27 GB on disk.
Old library on internal HD is 25,897 photos and takes 77.9 GB on disk.

What explains space savings? Any way to tell if new library on SSD has produced previews yet?

So. continuing problem with missing albums:
New library on SSD is missing roughly half of the smart albums from a folder I created title _Main SMART Albums.

Thing is, if I recreate the missing SMART albums in the new library, counts match. For instance, 5 star picks, both collect 133 images.

So, if you were me, where would you go from here? Work off of NEW library, and just recreate missing SMART albums? Or work off of OLD library?

Or try the last option of First Aid on OLD library and then try this one more time!

Should I just take new library and then Consolidate Masters from referenced iPhoto and then SuperDuper backup and Vault and cross my fingers going forward!?

I LOVE Aperture, but it is a real bummer when it doesn’t work how Apple says it should work!

I went ahead and hit Delete Previews for Library on new SSD library, and it is deleting all 25k of them. Be interesting to see how much additional space, if any, is saved. Considering all of my images are just 6 MP JPEGs.

Now I’m really confused Joseph!

I went ahead and Deleted Previews for Library. Watched Activity window delete all 25k+. Emptied Aperture Trash to be certain. Quit Aperture.

Library down to 41.3 GB on disk.

Opened Aperture back up again. Noticed Processing… Aperture was re-generating previews. So I went to Library > Projects and unchecked Maintain Previews for All Projects.

Then, to be safe, I again Deleted Previews for Library.

Strange thing is in Activity window, Aperture again cranked through deleting all 25k+ previews!?!? What the heck?!

John,

I’d just go about rebuilding the missing Smart Albums. We’ve seen some reports with oddities on Smart Albums here, seemingly all to do with date functions. If it’s not a huge deal, just rebuild them.

As far as the deleting previews, when you delete all previews, Aperture has to look at each image to see if there’s a preview, so it’ll say “deleting” for all 25k, even though all it’s really doing is looking for things to delete.

You’ve disabled “Maintain Previews for all projects” which is good, but also be sure to disable the preference Previews > New projects automatically generate previews.

And just in case you haven’t, you may want to set up a keyboard shortcut to quickly generate previews for files as needed, which is what I do (mine is shift-return).
