Moving Images: Re-Organising #1

Hi. Starting to get serious with Aperture, and realise importance of having a workable taxonomy in place. I now want to reorganise and create a new taxonomy, using the containers as they are meant to be used. So whats the problem? I can't move my images, or more accurately the behaviour appears to be inconsistent. I´ve read my manual, read my book, searched the web, searched your posts..nothing helping. I am creating new folders at root level. creating projects within those folders. selecting images from existing projects and moving to the new project. Only some images move across. I read your post on stacking/unstacking.. this isn't the issue here. I unstacked, and some images are still “left behind”. Some of the “orphaned” images have been edited by an external editor. But not all. Those “left behind” include unedited, edited images, external edited, stacked, and single images. I want to “move” not “copy”, from Project “x” to Project “y” and the target project may, or may not, be in the same folder. I´m sure this is ignorance not error. But Aperture really doesn't seem to want to move anything once you've given the original a home. Hope you can tell me where I´m going wrong. Thanks

H

Howard,

There are differences when moving between Projects and Albums or Projects to Projects, and you can easily duplicate Originals if needed.

The easiest way to think about this is go think analog. Projects are boxes of negatives (Masters), and Albums are books of prints (Versions). You can have as many prints as you want, in various sizes, formats, colors, etc., but there is only ever one negative. Unless you option-drag a file from one project to another, it should just move the master, not duplicate it.

Don’t know if that helped or confused…

Howard,

Usually when I hear these kinds of issues, it’s because the user is trying to drag images into a folder, but it seems you aren’t doing that. I wonder if it’s as simple as repairing your database.

Do this… create a brand new Library, make a few projects in folders, import a few photos and drag them around. See if you’re getting the same behavior, or if it’s working as expected. If it works as expected, repair the database on your main library (see the FAQ above for that)

keep us posted,
-Joseph

Hi Joseph..thanks for taking the time to reply. I think I´ve managed to do what I wanted to do, but through just random dragging and clicking, not really a thought out process. More luck than skill! I would note that I´ve dragged projects up and down a hierarchy into folders. Maybe the new versions respect that you need to move up and down a tree? Also, the Aperture manual states that drag and drop to move images between projects is supported (chapter 5: page 203). However I think it moves the originals, but leaves a version? It seemed that whenever I moved, it left a version behind. I managed to delete the remnants and have originals in their new folder/project home. Anyway. Looks like I´ve managed to achieve what I needed, but its still a bit of a mystery to me! Thanks for the feedback and the great blog. Cheers H
