rMBP Aperture 3.3.2 10.8 Kernel Panic #1

I am having an issue with kernel panics with my new Retina Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion and Aperture 3.3.2 when I change with resolution of the rMBP to 1920 x 1200. All software is up to date, including recent firmware updates.

I get constant kernel panics at this resolution but it's stable at it's native resolution. The problem usually manifests itself within a few minutes of starting Aperture and making some modifications.

I appreciate I could return it etc. etc. as I am still within my 14 day return period but I am curious if anyone else has the same issue.

I went to an apple store and tried to replicate the problem but I wasn't able to but there were a few differences.

I have the 750GB SSD 16GB version with Aperture 3.3.2, the Apple Store had the 500GB SSD 8GB with Aperture 3.3.1

Does anyone with the same spec as me have the same issues?

Since my last post, I have had my rMBP replaced and the problem has occurred again. Apple has been in touch (in response to a post I made in the apple discussion forums) so hopefully they can resolve it through software. I have supplied them with some background info so fingers crossed. Very impressed that they are proactively looking into - good to see!

I am having the exactly same problem with a MBR Retina, 500GB SSD 8GB and Aperture 3.3.2. I’m shooting RAW with a Nikon D800 and the files are massive. The crash is happening when I use the retouch tool. I logged a report through Aperture and have actually had a response from Apple requesting crash logs which i have sent through. It’s currently still happening today so I’m going to keep emailing the reports until they fix it! It’s frustrating when we have the most up to date hardware and the software is not even from a 3rd party.

Fun times…

I take that back, the problem is back. I’m hoping this is a software problem and not a hardware problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

Your best bet is to save a copy of the report then post it on the Apple forum and someone will tell you what exactly is causing it. It’s a bit worrying though.

Does it only happen on aperture? Have you tried iPhoto?

I would take the macbook pro in question to the apple store and see what they say.

iPhoto seems to be OK. I was mucking around in Aperture at the rMBP’s native resolution but I had a kernel panic as well. I might go down to the local Apple Store give them a demo and see what they say - it’s a shame that the spec I have is a bit hard to come by at the moment so I might have to resort to using the 17inch MBP until more are in stock. Talk about “first-world” problems!

Looks like the problem might of been related to my user account. I created a new user and moved my libraries across and Aperture seems to be behaving.

Not sure why this has worked as the user account on my new rMBP was newly created and not migrated from another machine. No matter, looks like we have a happy ending.

Same problem here: rMBP all up to date with 10.8.1, latest version of Aperture. Panicing consistently and reliably repeatably every time move the shadows slider on a D800e image. Joy.

I have experienced this too. I saw it mostly when in fullscreen mode at 1920x1200, and automatic graphics switching was enabled. When I disabled automatic graphics switching I seemed to not have this problem.

After a few email exchanges, Apple is able to replicate the problem so fingers crossed they are able to find a solution soon. I’m visiting the USA soon so my Aperture library is about to be inundated with thousands more photos … I need this sorted :-)
