Joesph,

I just watched your webinar on the Nik software site… glad to see a fellow Aperture user finally showing us some ideas from a Nik perspective. How do you handle multiple round trips to the Nik suite? For example, let’s say you want to use Dfine first, then go to Color effects pro, then finally create a B/W version and go to Silver Effects Pro.

My expereience has been that once Aperture creates the first TIFF file on the Dfine round trip, it continues to use that same file and not create a new one for the next two round trips. Am I missing something?

Joseph will probably have a better response than mine. Aperture will continue round tripping the same file until you make a new version. If I go to define, then to Colour Efex, if I want a b&w from Silver Efex but also want the colour version, I simply make a new version from the colour version and then send one of the two to Silver Efex. If you send the new version, you will end up creating a new TIFF from that version.

I'd much rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.

Scott,

Craig’s answer is the right one — you have to make a new version first. The idea here is that you could add Aperture effects but still edit the source underneath it, or if you make a new version, “flatten” your work and move on. Or from Craig’s approach, if you just want to maintain separate versions, that’s what you need to do.

As long as you see that circle-dot badge, then it will open the original file. Once that’s gone (it goes away when you make a new version), then Aperture will generate a new TIF or PSD to open in the plugin/app.

I wrote a detailed post on this a while ago, here: “Open in Editor or Plug-in… Again”
