Some recent updates in the world of Aperturelandia…

Aperture 3.4.5

It’s a minor update, but it does fix some issues that people have reported here, mainly that Aperture could crash after choosing to delete images from a memory card after import. That’s a scary thing to see, because at that point you don’t know if the pictures were imported safely, or if Aperture actually deleted them off the card, or what. For what it’s worth, I recommend NOT using this feature, ever. Not because Aperture may crash, but because until your photos are imported to Aperture, then backed up somewhere else, you should not delete them from the card. And when you are finally ready to clear the card, don’t delete images — reformat the card. That’s always the best practice.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.06

This came out last week, but wasn’t addressed here. As always it includes a list of cameras that some were desperately waiting for, is missing some that others are still desperately waiting for, and has at least one that leaves me scratching my head.

  • Canon EOS-1D C
  • Canon EOS Rebel SL1 / 100D / Kiss X7
  • Canon EOS Rebel T5i / 700D / Kiss X7i
  • Hasselblad Lunar
  • Nikon COOLPIX A
  • Nikon D7100
  • Nikon 1 J3
  • Nikon 1 S1
  • Sony Alpha NEX-3N

So the Hasselblad Lunar is supported, but the Leica Monocrom still isn’t. I assume the Hassy came easy since it’s basically an overpriced Sony NEX, but still. I know a few Monocrhom shooters who’ve given up hope. Bummer.

Run software update to see the latest from Apple

If you haven’t seen this pop up on your screen yet, just run Software Update from the Apple menu. Or you can download the Aperture 3.4.5 update directly and the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Upate 4.06 directly from apple.com.

I thought the Monochrome was just a DNG? Wouldn’t Aperture open that natively?

Apparently not Chris. I’ve heard from a few Monochrom owners that they have to use Lightroom if they want to edit the RAW files. Real bummer.

•• Have you picked up your copy of the Nik Collection for just $126? This deal won’t last forever!

More importantly than the small bug fixes, Aperture now allows original-sized uploads to Flickr. Wohoo! I have never liked Flickr, but with so much free space, it’s free backup.
Now, someone get to scripting and write an app that uploads my whole library for an extra backup… get on it!

Hunter,

How did you find out about the Flickr export change? I haven’t seen anyone else report that.

Thomas

The Leica Monochrom file is a linear DNG, indeed, and the monochromatic option, to the best of my understanding, is included in the DNG specification.
However I am a Monochrom user and I confirm that its file is not recognized by the Mac OS.

Ario

Actually many other raw converters I am familiar with (Lightroom, Capture One, Iridient, Photo Ninja, AccuRaw, RPP) have provided support for the Leica Monochrom since quite some time.

Ario

Thomas- It’s the one thing I expected them to update, and mention. Didn’t read about it, just tried it out hoping they would update it. It seems that you have to create a new ‘set’ for it to work- got a little weird tying to add to former sets.

@ApertureExpert

I just updated to Aperture 3.4.5, and then I went got Nik Software, but Color Efex Pro 4 is not working as a plug-in. Every time I ask Aperture to use the plug-in, spinning wheel of death starts and doesn’t stop. All others with exception of HDR don’t do that.

Is it working fine for you?

Ariel,
Color Efex Pro 4 works perfectly as before with Aperture 3.4.5. on my i-Mac and MBP.
I would try to re-install the plug-in.

Ario

Joseph,

Monochrom shooters should not give up hope. I know it is taking too long, but I hope they get it right (just like the Fuji Xtrans Sensor).

Apple makes the sensor profile for each camera and does not rely solely on the manufacturer info, hence the delay on many cameras. The Leica Monochrom specifically only made its way into Apple HQ early this year. I’ve been reassured that support is in its way. Hopefully soon. Maybe it will require core services (raw) updates and not only a raw update. This is not the only non-bayer sensor, but is definitely the only non-bayer, monochrome, linear DNG.

Ario, I share your pain. The wait is frustrating. I tried Photo Ninja, AccuRaw, RPP but they convert the DNG into TIFF and the file size is 3x bigger. Lightroom is not an option for me. I just can’t get it (as my main program). What I’ve been doing is shooting DNG+JPG, using the JPG to select, edit metadata etc. I bought the add-on “open Master with Lightroom” - http://www.apertureexpert.com/storedetails/applescript-open-master-in-li… and it works great when I need to make more adjustments on a picture. This will buy me time while waiting for full support.

cheers

Raf
