Time Machine will backup your images as long as your images are stored on your startup drive.

To clarify … you can also use TM to backup libraries and images hosted on external drives (or drives other than your startup drive) … IF … your Time Machine backup dive has enough capacity to store all the data you desire to backup.

If you open the Time Machine preference panel in either your Menu Bar, or System Preferences, you specify what drive is backed up. I think you can also tailor to specific folders.

I seem to remember configuring mine not to back up the System Folder, in order to save space.

Bit of a learning curve this Apple/Aperture thing
Firstly, very impressed with the cataloguing and edit capability
Still haven’t really understood this Vault thing
Apparently, with vault, none of the masters are backed up?

Had a good look at both my external drives where Time Machine is backing up, could not find any images

Eventually, I found the Aperture Library in pictures in the finder

Just to be sure to be sure,
I dragged these Aperture Libraries into each external drive
Then did a test with the Aperture application and opened each drive to see if it worked
All OK so far

Maybe Time Machine just backs up previews?
Unfortunately, I just have too many images to all fit on the Mac HDD and DAM is a must for my situation

Time Machine doesn’t back up everything inside an Aperture library. I just compared my original (mostly managed) library to TM backup and they are different sizes. Original: 500.69GB. Backup: 469.27GB. There’s some minor differences in some of the backup content sizes but here’s what’s missing from the backup (inside the package file) that makes up 99+% of the difference:

1. Apple TV Photo Cache (47.5MB)
2. iPod Photo Cache (4.35GB)
3. Thumbnails (27.24GB)

If you don’t have an AppleTV or haven’t enabled iPod/iPhone/iPad syncing you might only have 1 or two of these folders inside your library package.

The bottom line is Time Machine doesn’t backup caches or thumbnails, but it does backup the Previews.
