Hi

Appreciate any help.  Installed Mavericks to allow me to update Aperture 3 for new Raw update and ever since have been experiencing crashes, unformated image problems, half formed thumbnails etc.

have been reading suggested solutions and to date have:

  • verified, repaired and rebuilt the data base
  • repaired, verified etc the hard drive
  • created carbon clone and time machine backups
  • run from the cloned drive and found the same problems
  • reinstalled mavericks
  • pulled my hair out

latest error log below if it helps:

(EDITOR'S NOTE: I've removed the text to make this post more manageable; if you want to see the crash report, download it here)

Appreciate any new ideas

Cheers

Alec

Inside Aperture there is a “Provide Aperture Feedback” option under the Aperture menu. Use that to file a bug report with Apple and give them all of the log data you posted above. The info above shows the application error .. “divide by zero”.

Exception Type:  EXC_ARITHMETIC (SIGFPE)
Exception Codes: EXC_I386_DIV (divide by zero

All the rest of the data above should help Apple find exactly where the “divide by zero” occurred. If you are willing to do so, you can also offer Apple a copy of your Library. I have provided Apple a copy of my Library folder in the past and it provided them all the evidence they needed to fix the problem in a later update to Aperture. Apple does listen.

As for your current problem, if you have enough space you could create a new Library and try to import your “problem” Library into it. Another option is Photos > Reprocess Original. That has been known to clear up some issues in the past for some people.

Thanks Walter

A couple of follow ups if you don’t mind.

When I try and copy the errors report into the feedback field only about 2 lines seem to copy? Any tips or has the field got limited characters.

Second when I try and import old into new the aperture library concerned does not appear - I can see it in finder but not I the aperture function.

The problems all started with trying to download raw update 5.01 which demanded I install Mavericks - never thought buying a point and shoot would cause so much pain.

Cheers

Actually, let’s get the whole file. I think you can upload it here, or just email it to me Joseph @ apertureexpert.com. To create the file, do the about this Mac, then more info, then save the file.

OK, I'd like you to try something. There's an obscure issue I ran into once years and years ago and I wonder if you're hitting the same thing, and that's images that are showing a zero or empty height and/or width.

Create a Smart Album that looks at your entire library, and set it to EXIF > Pixel Height = empty, and zero, and again with Width. Here's a screenshot so you see what I mean.

pixel height or width being zero or empty is usually a bad thing

Be sure that ANY is set and that it's looking at the entire Library.

I actually need to check this myself on my main system back in the studio. At one point (again, years ago) this search found many. I don't even recall how I figured this out. But once I deleted those, the problems I was having went away.

Let me know, for sure, what happens.
