I had to rebuild my data base. I do not use faces. Have had it turned off for over a year. But the ‘rebuild-process’ is rebuilding faces as well. Is that just the way it is? Or is there an option to NOT REBUILD FACES? Or does the nature of a data base require rebuilding of everything? Perhaps it could be a request to apple if there is no way to avoid faces-rebuild currently?
I do a lot of Rebuilding and have never used faces. Rebuilding does something every time I rebuild for up to 5 min! Seems silly that with it turned off it would still search that stuff. Wonder if anyone has gone into the Lib Package and deleted the folders pertaining to Faces? May that would help. Im asking before I try it. David

David: thanks for your response. Very interesting idea that you raise. (Deleting folders). I have not done that. Was thinking about something less aggressive like deleting or renaming and moving plist files on the theory that my prior use of faces may have left little ghosts for the rebuild process– “to process”. Thanks again.
Well seriously I wasn’t going to do it till someone tested it first. Your Idea of plist file sounds good too? That is very dangerous to mess with the package cuts of the Library. My lawyer requested that I add that last sentence. Cheers

David: Here is an update the faces issue in rebuilding database process.
1/I removed (and renamed for safe-keeping) the Aperture plist file.
2/ Then I opened Aperture while holding down option/command keys.
3: This brought up the usual 3 options with the REPAIR radio button highlighted. So I took the less aggressive path and repaired the library. It took about 5 minutes. I checked the preferences once Aperture opened and Faces was still turned off.
4:So I am not sure if we learned anything. But in repair mode, Aperture did not force rebuild faces.
5: Just to complete the experiment, I will delete the plist again and next time when I open Aperture I will choose REBUILD DATA BASE and let you know.
Thanks.
Another update today. 1 trashed plist 2 opened aperture with the REBUILD database option 3 after restoring versions and albums aperture began to RESTORE FACES which should not exist after deleting plist file and faces turned off in preferences. Any ideas / suggestions?
Do you mean that Faces are being rebuilt after the rebuild is done? I thought you you meant that faces does some work during the rebuild if you watched in Activity Monitor.

Sorry for the confusion. What I mean is that rebuilding faces is part of the rebuild database process even though I have not enabled faces. And this is the part of the rebuild process that goes on for hours and hours. Restoring versions and albums prior to the faces step is pretty quick by comparison.
Well That rebuild probably will do something with faces…we can’t change that. Only the the Engineer gods at Apple. When you rebuild you can open Activity Monitor and double click on Aperture, then open the tab that says open files and ports?
Scroll to the bottom and you can watch a bunch of stuff change. Up above is a counter for Hangs. How many do you get? Start Activity Monitor before you Option click on AP so the counter starts at zero. Also let me know how big your Lib is. whether it is managed or Reference, and the exact time it took to complete. Sorry if you have mentioned this before. DBM

Hi David: Yeah, figure we are in the grip of the engineers. But I don’t think it’s out of order to suggest that a database rebuild function that can go overnight to restore a function( faces) which is turned off–well, engineer gods or not–it has the feel of a bug or an overly protective frame of mind. Regarding my images. It’s a modest library. Just under 30,000 images waiting to bring in several thousand film scans. Library is managed. Will do the activity monitor next time I rebuild. Which won’t be done voluntarily for a while. Thanks, as always for your insight and analysis.
Ok, David, ‘this one’s for you’
13:38 Started rebuild
13:50’ish rebuild finished with folders, keywords, versions , and I assume albums. ( I was not looking at that moment). But at 13:50 or so rebuild went into its faces mode. I expect this to go well into the evening, if not overnight.
Hangs so far: zero.
Thanks and will keep you posted.
So 12 min for the rebuild, thats good, but hours for the faces. Thanks for the more accurate numbers, it helps me to understand. Id call apple care apple support 1 (800) 676-2773 (first time free) or email aperturefeedback@group.apple.com. That doesn’t seem to be right after all the repairs and rebuilds. Let me know.

David: here is an unexpected update.
When the rebuild went into its faces routine, I am used to that going on for hours and hours so I left for a couple hours. When I came back to the computer, the monitor was black as if the system had shut down. I hit the space bar a couple times and there was no response. So rather than be patient, I hit the power switch and held it down. Needless to say it shut down and rebooted. On reboot I got the message that Aperture was in a ‘rebuild’ process and did I want to open Aperture again. I chose to open. Then closed the program and opened agin to select the REPAIR option. That went smoothly and everything seems ok. So I apologize for not getting you an exact time of how long the rebuild process took, because it did not finish. This screen going black was a new wrinkle for me in the rebuild process.
I did send a note to aperture feedback on the original question regarding why REBUILD rebuilds FACES, if FACES are turned off. If I hear anything I will post it. But I am going to let things be as they are for a bit. As a reminder, Apple does say, don’t select REBUILD unless you have to in specific circumstances.
Thanks for all.
If you interrupt the Rebuild I wouldn’t hurt to do it again. This time go into your energy preferences and set them to never till the rebuild is complete. No need to tell me how long now….I have a better understanding or non understanding of what you are experiencing. Ive rebuilt mine hundreds of time and I can find all images. I think I personally have hard ware problems on my end. Rebuild and repair away and talk to aperture feedback when they email back. Cheers

Rebuild/ faces update.
Rebuild took over 28 hours. First ten minutes took care of Folders, versions, keywords. Then the rest of the rebuild was all about restoring FACES, which I do not use. And I think the longest piece of this (or at least a very very long piece of it) was rebuilding FACES IN JOURNALS. Something I had not thought about.
And needless to say: when I checked PREFERENCES, magically, FACES was turned on again.
No word back from Aperture Feedback.
Thanks.
Well thats Done! Well I guess the real test will come when you feel the need to rebuild again …. and then will faces take just as long? Im hoping for you that this one 28 hour rebuild fixes the problem and it will take a shorter time in the future. Good luck

As painful as it might be, sometimes just letting Aperture do its think (like your 28 hour rebuild) is simply necessary and in the end solves the problem. Hope this solves yours.

Thanks, Walter. I see the wisdom of your suggestion–let aperture be aperture. Still a little puzzled. Maybe it’s just the way databases work–rebuild insists on rebuilding faces even if faces are turned off in preferences. Deleting the plist before rebuilding did not change this behavior. Just puzzled. Wondering now if it’s a “cache” issue.
