I’m trying to duplicate “awful”
I think I see some of what your talking about.
Some times when a heavy burn is applied with “detect edges” turned on it helps to go back over the edge with the feather tool in the burn adjustment brick set at half strength and half size to soften the effect along the edge line.

Well by ‘awful’ I mean “dominates the image and makes it unviewable”. Yes it is a heavy burn. The feathering helps but is time consuming, I think Nik is probably the answer for photos needing that degree of adjustments as it seems to produce much less halo.
It just seems odd that Apple’s algorithm apparently says to itself “Oh look! There’s an edge. I’ll create a mask that goes one pixel short of it”.
